potential FIX for npc slowdown

The CRC32 checksum matches, so I doubt the file is infected.

Thanks for checking that. Didn't even think of a CRC check.

I've found a working link for the original file from back in the day. It also explains a little better the function of the file and as to why I don't think the other versions of the file will work.

No popups from what I can tell. In raw form so you can cut and paste to your heart's delight! Just in case. ;)

Would downloading this accomplish the same thing? If so, I'm going to be downloading the mediafire version instead, as after rereading through, I haven't downloaded the file linked to in the OP.

I really don't think it is, I scanned it with different types of security software, opened it with a hex editor and It really seems just what is pretends to be. Also, neither of the "original" d3d9.dll files (the larger ones that come with the OS or that you find online) don't give me the same performance boost as this one.

Like I posted above, it is probably from Megaupload, not from the DLL. If you can find a safe way to get the file, more power to you. Was just posting fair warning that I got infected without accepting or running any popups.

The MediaFire link contains the exact same d3d9.dll; unfortunately, it also has a bunch of other stuff in the archive (the DLL itself is part of a fix to make Fallout 3 run on old hardware; it just happens to also fix the problems in New Vegas), so it's a ~30MB download as opposed to ~100KB download. Small price to pay, if Megaupload really is the issue.

I downloaded the file realizing that before you posted this, and copied the .dll. It works flawlessly. I was getting like 2FPS in the starting zone after looking left and about 10 looking at Easy Pete, or whatever his name is outside of the saloon. Now I get a flawless 60FPS with everything maxed, 1920x1080, no AA, 15x Anisotropic filtering.

To everyone: If you don't mind the bigger download, use the mediafire link instead. It absolutely works. Just make sure all you do is copy the .dll.

Thank you for posting that link.

The important part is a readily available dll file from Dx9. I was just looking at my copy of Fallout 3, and that one is on there, ready to copy wherever it's needed. I'll look on the Fallout NV disk when I get it here.

Never thought of that! That just might work. Post your experiences!

Point is though, this d3d9.dll file is a small modified file that specifically "spoofs" the videocard ID that allows Facegen to function properly. I don't think any other version is going to do that. People are reporting that this d3d9.dll file give the best performance. Just an FYI.

Works great for me - framerates in areas with NPCs are literally double what they were.

With regards to malware - it's gotta be MegaUpload. DLL itself scans clean with ESET/MSE/Malwarebytes (as reported) and I haven't had anything happen when saving/loading games.

Thanks to the op for finding this and bringing it to our attention!

Fair enough.

I use Noscript so if it was the site, NS prevented it for me.

For those not wanting to mess with the mediafire or megafile upload, it has been posted at the Fallout New Vegas Nexus.

Confirmed, this is the same file from the old Fallout 3 fix download. Those of you picking up viruses are almost certainly getting them from megauploads. I never trust these terrible public upload sites, to be honest... they do almost no screening of the ads they'll run. Anyway, I've been playing for well over an hour now, just rescan my system, still nothing to report. Now that a solution's been found, hopefully the devs can get an official patch out ASAP because I'm sure there are many, many users who either don't read these forums or are unwilling to try this.

Again, to reiterate.

Dx9.dll is NOT, i repeat, NOT a file that should be messed around with, or changed, or edited. It is a system file, meaning that it is a VERY IMPORTANT file.

If any of you suffer damage to your computers or OS through downloading a random version off the net, there will be no responsibility of Bethesda's part or Obsidians part.

edit: The reason it seems to work is because it forces the game to run in a limited fashion. Users with Intel Chipsets changed the same file to force Fallout 3 to run on the Chipsets which didn't meet the minimum requirements. - and at the same time risking hardware damage by running a game on a chipset that was never meant to take the strain.

Forcing a game to do something is never a good idea.

well, I've tried everything on this thread and fallout will not load with the .dll, but i got paraniod hearing about the malware so i did a full system scan with trend micro and cookies came up that have nothing to do with the .dll. (they a more to do with my late night browsing ; P). So i don't think the malware or virus is related to this .dll, but unfortunately it doesnt work for me, New Vegas runs choppy without the .dll, with the .dll the launcher just loops itself and the game never starts. what a bother, tryto fix this game is all i have been doing these last two days. BUT i am grateful for this community, thx everyone and if u come up with anything else plz lemme know.

after being skeptical about this, as posted before, I decided to try it anyway after reading some more posts. After playing, I can say it works great and nothing has happened yet to my PC that would raise suspicion.

When you join in a thread that involves full-power video graphics hardware that shouldn't be having problems, you should have something new to say; with only a business quality video solution, your laptop is SUPPOSED to run the animations slowly. That's what below minimum graphics always does.
