potential FIX for npc slowdown

It defiantly improved my FPS!!!

I do understand the risks of downloading random dll files but I found a copy on my own rig here:

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-directx-direct3d9_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_c223c2c8c219cb6a

Just search your C:\Windows folder and it will pop up MS's version directly from DX and MS.

Scratch that. Seems that one breaks Fraps. As soon as I rename it Fraps works. The downloaded one does not break Fraps.

This worked for me. Had to place it in my steam/steamapps/common/falloutnewegas, as games/falloutnv did nothing.

As far as I can tell the FalloutNV executable will use this older version of DirectX .dll instead of the one installed by the latest version of DirectX. Kind-of like the fact that Windows XP wasn't allowed a DirectX above 9 and no Windows XP users are having any problems with the NPC slowdown. Capiche? That said, true installing a random file makes no sense so maybe just get a similar version of the file from a buddy with Windows XP or download this one and scan it to make sure there are no creepy crawlies. This was ingenious really, and a good option that we can delete the file AFTER they patch it - whenever that will be.

New Vegas is DirectX 9?? What is this, the year 2002? I can't believe they didn't upgrade the engine to support DX10, if not DX11! This is obviously lazyness or cost cutting. Rather than making a DX9 version for XBOX, and a DX11 version for PC, they left it the same. I'm starting to think that New Vegas is just riding the money train of Fallout 3. I was afraid this was going to happen, but yet I fell for it and purchased the game anyway.

And yet it still runs like crap on modern DX11 hardware.

Ok its way faster. It seems to have eliminated a bottleneck for both characters and the environment. I would still like to see before/after screenshots if someone has the time to do it. It looked like the graphics were the same, same DOF when in npc dialogues, but I'm not quite sure about all the specular overlays being there. Anybody?

I can confirm this is working. When I launched the game after placing this file in the main falloutnv directory as the OP stated the game re detects your graphics settings. I then set everything to ULTRA at 1920x1080 and I now get a steady FPS of 40 outdoors and 60 indoors, speaking with an NPC does not hinder my FPS anymore, doesn't move from 40 or 60FPS. Those settings are on ULTRA with all the settings maxed out!

Looks like this worked.

Thanks OP!

I have no idea what the hell this file does, maybe one of you tech monkeys can elaborate why placing a direct x9 file in the main game directory makes the game work like it's supposed to.

I did a virus check on the file plus malware scans, it's clean.

I'll just repost my answer from the other thread:

Putting the d3d9.dll in my SteamApps/common/Fallout New Vegas folder worked.

This completely fixes the problem for me. After copying over the file, the next time you launch the New Vegas launcher it will auto-detect your settings again. It said it had autodetected that I should be on Medium settings. I then set everything to High and started the game.

I just got down fighting a massive running gun battle with all the residents in Freeside, 15+ NPCs on screen at once and runnings everywhere. NO slow down. NO jerkiness. The framerate stayed high, smooth, and with no hiccups. So again, confirmed fix for me.

Before, even on the lowest settings for everything, my game had low FPS and the framerate nose-dived around NPCs. Now, with everything on the highest settings I get the same silky smooth performance I got in FO3 with this rig.

System Specs in-case anyone wants them for insight into what I am working with:
Windows 7 64-bit
Nvidia GTX 260 1 GB
12 GB RAM
i970 Quad Core Intel CPU 3.0 ghz

Because we are the ones testing it and fixing it. With no activity from the devs (which is pretty $hitty I might add) I cannot help but feel like a heel, as well as the rest of the people fixing Obsidian's latest blunder.

Interesting. I raised my resolution from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 and my FPS went UP and are now above 60 (64 actually.) when looking at the saloon with Pete seated in front.

So pleased! Thanks again for the heads up. :)

That is so true and sad. We're doing all the work for them and we're not even getting paid for it. Great job to the original poster! Maybe the company should hire him so this sort of thing doesn't happen again in Fallout 4..

This is likely the last time Bethesda will be using the GameBryo engine. Now since Zenimax bought id Software I imagine future games will be using a version of the Rage engine. I have heard comments to this effect at least.

I will not buy FO4 if they intend on using this engine again. They aren't gonna get me 3 times!

Shame on Bethesda and Obsidian. This is such a simple fix (the correct DX9 version). Was this game even tested? Thanks to whoever found this first.

I'm guessing someone just moved the d3d9.dll render from an up to date x32 Windows XP SP3 machine and put it in the same directory as FalloutNV.exe to make it use THAT version of the file before hunting down the other d3d9.dll file (that has been made to work with DirectX10 and DirectX11) in the system directory. No Windows XP user has complained about the same problem. How they nailed it down to DirectX? Now THAT is something.

Again - ingenious. Simple AND effective.

You bring up a good point. So will this dll file work in Windows 7 64 bit?

OMG, another added bonus, both my GPUs are running at 35% used now, not just 1 of them.

:celebration:

P.S.

MrP, yes, I am using W7 64 bit.

That is so true and sad. We're doing all the work for them and we're not even getting paid for it. Great job to the original poster! Maybe the company should hire him so this sort of thing doesn't happen again in Fallout 4..

Although on the bright side this game series must be pretty fantastic for it to have the support group it does have. The fallout community in general is pretty darn awesome. I can't wait to see the mods. Funny part is, while the dev's drink their margaritas - the game is in essence FIXING ITSELF. :)

There is no 64-bit FalloutNV executable that I'm aware of... :)

Seriously though - most if not all games are still 32-bit running on a 64-bit system. Save a handful. This will be fine. :)

I can't believe something so simple fixed all this nonsense.
