potential FIX for npc slowdown

Post » Sun Sep 27, 2009 2:28 am

Please be aware that downloading files from unknown sources is dangerous and potentially harmful to your computer.

ok so, first download the dx9.dll from the following link
(has been scanned and confirmed to be safe)
and place it in your "steam/common/fallout new vegas" directory
thats it. for me and at least many other persons (at the time of this writing) gpu usage has gone up and npc slowdown as well as general framerates have improved. try it out and lemme know if its working for others.

UPDATE: ignore that megaupload link. fallout nexus has it
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778

for those of you worried about downloading a random link some stranger posted (dont blame you) you can find the dx9d9.dll on your computer here

"C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-directx-direct3d9_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_c223c2c8c219cb6a

Just search your C:\Windows folder and it will pop up MS's version directly from DX and MS. " (could break fraps) -thanks wolfpup

also to give credit where it is due,i found the dll here initially http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/

Three things here.

1)Downloading a random file is never that good an idea. Anyone who does so, make sure you run a virus check.

2)That file involved is not one that should be messed about with. Any strange changes that have been made to it can potentially damage your system.

3)Last I checked. New Vegas was Directx 9 game. So there is no 'defaulting to dx10'

Yeah, the game has no DX10 so it can't have a bad implementation of it. Not sure what this would do, but I'm not downloading some random file on megaupload to find out, especially since the "ToggleEmotions" command fixed the problem for me.

just because a game was built in dx9 doesnt mean that they cant implement it later

Again, to reiterate.

Dx9.dll is NOT, i repeat, NOT a file that should be messed around with, or changed, or edited. It is a system file, meaning that it is a VERY IMPORTANT file.

If any of you suffer damage to your computers or OS through downloading a random version off the net, there will be no responsibility of Bethesda's part or Obsidians part.

edit: The reason it seems to work is because it forces the game to run in a limited fashion. Users with Intel Chipsets changed the same file to force Fallout 3 to run on the Chipsets which didn't meet the minimum requirements. - and at the same time risking hardware damage by running a game on a chipset that was never meant to take the strain.

Forcing a game to do something is never a good idea.

Your first mistake was downloading the file.
2nd was installing it as directed by some random internet yahoo.

I can confirm that this works as well, although I had to place it within the root directory for new vegas instead of the My games one.

Steam > Steamapps > common > fallout new vegas

I noticed during install that Steam did a DirectX install, even though my system was already fully up-to-date. I wonder about reinstalling DX from Microsoft, but games often use their own DX dll file in the game folder--may have to remove or replace that one (if there is one there). Still, if a different DX9 file is helping some people, then it is certainly a valid path of exploration to troubleshoot this issue.

I just tried it and it works. I placed it in both the "my games" and the main fallout steam dir, and when running the launcher it re-detects the video card as a "Geforce 7900GS", I had to re-set the graphics settings.

I loaded a save in an area with many NPCS (like 10 or more) and before the fix the gpu load was 30-40% looking at the floor, but 85% looking at the people. After the fix the load was identical looking at the floor but was 50-70% looking at people and the framerate was way better.

I would love to see a visual quality comparison, but if you guys are running into unplayable performance issues this might be worth using.

I think you're supposed to use 'd3d9.dll' not dx9.dll. Someone get that mixed up? I'll have to recheck.

while i agree that downloading random files posted by random people is certainly a bad idea, it does work. ill see if i can find a more legitimate looking fix as to not destroy my credibility.
