Psymon, I ended up going with Atmospheric Sound Effects (and Illuminated windows). I recommend you check out abusemynipbles.biz for some info on these mods. There, BTB made certain edits to ASE. I tried out the others mods you mentioned and liked this best in the end.

1. Will using ASE, Morrowind Sound Enhancement, or Better Sounds mess with herbalism mods?I use ASE and Graphic Herbalism and I haven't noticed a conflict.

[edit clarity - I hope ... I'm still a bit confused - the lists don't talk of compatibilities they just list the mods - readmes unable to address newer mods]The mlox tool is fantastic and can help find and warn you about conflicts.

Does anyone have success stories or advice to someone like me who has a gut reaction to want to install them all? I'm just not sure which sound mod or combo to go with.1. Spend time trying them out. Start with one at a time
2. Read bug reports or votes on planetelderscrolls.com
3. Use the Wrye Mash Installers feature and learn it well
4. Use tes3cmd (available at the mlox page) in this fashion: "mlox clean --replace yourmod.esp" to clean junk out of mods
5. Use "tes3cmd multipatch" to merge leveled lists.
6. Use mlox to watch out for conflicts and get helpful advice
7. Use TESPCD to watch out for conflicts (they occur often but usually aren't a big deal, and merged mods can iron them out)

[edit 2] and what is up with Swiveller's sound mod - where you convert mp3s to wav to even install it. Has anyone? Sounds like a royal pain. Is it worth it? He distributed mp3 files instead of wavs in order to decrease download size. I'm using his ambient loops, which required editing Morrowind.ini to install. The thunder sounds great, the birds chirping are a little loud. Overall I like it.
FYI since you are interested in sound mods, I went with these:
1. ASE (BTB's edits to the base plugin and the Illuminated Windows TB/BM extensions)
2. Morrowind Sound Replacer (need Oblivion installed to install this; it copies files from Oblivion!)
3. Ascended Sleepr SFX
4. Improved Sounds Chamber of Song
5. Kiriel's Inerior Weather
6. Replacement Sounds for Kirel's Interior Weather
7. Quieter UI Sounds
8. Sleepers, Awake!
9. Swivellers Sounds 1.1 (ambient sounds only)
10. Thieves Step
I've tried many more sound mods and NOT used them.
I've also chosen to use like 5 voice mods and Better Music System. Overall I'm using a bit less than 526 downloaded mod files, and I have some esm's/esp's are merged together for a total of 254 such files loaded into Morrowind.
