Power Armor Costume

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2009 4:09 pm

I'm working on a Power armor costume for Holloween. I'm almost finished with the helmet. I wanted to post a few pictures to see what you guys think. It's mostly made of Sintra (It's similar to what they make Stormtooper costumes out of). For some of the detailed parts I used all kinds of stuff from Home Depot and my basemant: Play-doe containers, shower rod holders, pencils, cat-5 and coaxail cable, plumber washers...

Anyway, it's taken a few weeks now and I just wanted to know if I should continue to finish it.

Thanks. I was thinking about making the whole set. I've put it on hold at the moment while I make my daughter one of those Pepakura Master Chief Costumes. But I think I will start back up once that is complete.

O.O

Im impressed.. I once mad a predator costume, took me months but it was amazing, but after that i dont think i'd have the patience to make another costume, i even had the gun on a remote controle motor from a toy car so it moved and pointed at people, it also had a laser pen in it. t'was amazing, my friend was controling the gun, he kept pointing it in people eyes so i got shouted at >.< He was just jealous cos his Frank the bunny rabbit costume (donnie darko) was terrible

Thanks, guys. My original intention was to make an easy template so I could make multiple sets. But after I finished the base helmet, I realized there is no way I'm going to make a second one :)
For those who are interested, attached is my template for the base helmet. I made it from importing a picture into CAD and pulling deminsions off of it. I have access to a plotter, so the size of the sheet should be 24"x36". There is no template for the top of the helmet, because Sintra has the same bending properties of paper, unless you thermoform...and I don't thermoform. So I made the top template manually with trial and error out of cardboard. Once you get this helmet together, you will see why you won't make a second...There is a reason I call it the BASE helmet. Lots of mudding and sanding.
Construction paper or Cardboard could probably be used, but it won't have very much strength.

Admit it! You stole it from the studio, didn't you?

It's really very realistic and pretty. ^^

Just wanted to say that I was very impressed with your work. That power armor is going to be boss or maybe BOS. I svck at scratch builds so that is even more incredible to me.

I think I might of seen you around the 405th awhile back for the kid chief. I was hoping you could tell me where you got the tubing for the respirator/gas mask. I have looked everywhere and either it's the wrong size or the wrong shape. Yours looks just right.

I'm working on my own custom version T-51b is why I wanted to know. Here's a pic to show I'm not just BSing you.

Also, we've made some pepakura stuff for the Pipboy, T4x, T51b, and F3 Enclave Mk II on the 405th if people are interested.

Sigma-LS,

That is an awesome helmet! I can't wait to see it painted and detailed. I see you are 'Macgyvering' parts of it like I am. MacGyverers rule! :)

I haven't been around the 405th. They are VERY good! too intimidating :) I just started My daughters costume about a month ago.

About the tubing:
I searched like crazy on google for some good tubing. I did find a site that sells something almost Identical to it. At the time I found it, I thought they where asking too much for it, so I decided to use 4 plastic flexible extentions (2 for each side) you can pick them up in the plumbing aisle at home depot and cut to fit. But once I bought them and finished the one side of the helmet, I realized that the price they where asking for was the same as the flex extensions. But the flex extensions are hard and are not very flexible, but the rubber tubing I saw on that site would be WAY more flowable and life like. Thats why I haven't finished the other side yet. I think I might find that site again and swap out the hoses. If I find the link, I will post it. Here is a picture of a flex entention (not the one I have, but it will give you an idea). The ones at home depot are corrugated deeper, like mine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/MightyJohn/flexible-plastic-pipe-extension.jpg

Edit: I found the website. Warning: This site is unsuitable for children. It is an 'all things latex' site, if you know what I mean. I made the link directly to the hose, but there will be some funky links (at the bottom of your screen) to other areas that they specialize in. Admin: if this is too much, please remove this link. But it is the only site I found that sells this hose.

http://new.twistmyrubberarm.com/index.php?code=5059&cat=31 - read EDIT below!

EDIT: My hoses came in. Not only are they too small of a diameter for what I wanted, the quality of the material is NOT like the photo they show. It might be good for a T-51b helmet maybe, but I don't recommend them for this build...sorry.

Gstaff- Thanks alot. Hopefully the finished piece will measure up to the quality of the inspiration.

MightyJohn- Haha, it figures that would be the only place to get new hoses for gas masks out of production for 30 years. Absolutely classic, I'll have to order a couple when they get their web store back up. Thanks for the link. And yeah, Macgyvering parts on these kinds of projects is the only way to go. Why spend hours making a part when you can buy it for $2 at Home Depot. :D

BTW I don't know where you got your pep files but our Halo Pep Wiki hasn't been updated in forever. There's much higher quality files on the actual 405th forums. I think the old peping tuts in the Wiki still work pretty well though. Good luck with her costume!

Holy Hell, I was not expecting that level of detail when I clicked that link. It really does look like a commission from a professional designer.

Thanks for the support, guys. You have all gotten me geeked to be back working on it. I made the shoulder and chest templates yesterday. I did a cardboard mock up of the shoulders and tweaked it a little. I think they are good to go. Once I pick up some more Sintra, those will be the first to get done. And once I get some more cardboard, I'll make a mock up of the chest piece to see how that looks. Also, I swapped out the HUGE spot light for something smaller. Maybe one day, I'll actually make it a real light. Now, I just need to get those hoses, finish the microphone and a few minor details and touch up paint and I'll be happy.

I've been screwing around with costumes for about 8 years now. Nothing big, just a fun hobby. My first costume was a Boba Fett. I never got around to the gauntlets. I made a LotR Witch King helmet for Halloween last year. That one is pretty cool. I made my oldest daughter a Princess Warrior costume that she grew out of before halloween :). I made a LotR Elf helmet from Helms Deep for my wife and a mask for my 5 year old. And now I'm trying this Pep thing for my daughter. If you guys want to see some of my costumes, I have them posted on my Myspace page (in three different albums - halloween, Witch King and More costume making):

http://myspace.com/johntcrud

Sigma-LS- I just got the files from Halo Pep Wiki. It's just for my 5 year old Daughter, so she won't know (and for that fact-the less pieces, the better :)). She has never seen the game before; I had to make it pink, just so she will wear it. Besides, Pep is pretty time consuming. I've got the helmet and one forearm complete. I'm currently working on the chest and back. And I'm all ready for a long break.

How do you guys form fit your helmets? I need to fit her helmet and my fallout helmet. Hers is pretty light, I was thinking maybe some kind of foam? The fallout helmet is heavy thou. I might have to cut up a hardhat or something.

Thanks guys. I'll post more pictures as I complete the set!

Cool deal. Looking forward to the pics. For all the helms I've made I've seen 3 good options. The first that's most expensive and that I've only used once is replacement padding for the inside of a motorcycle helm. It's pretty but hot and stuffy. If it's a close-fitting helm I use this stuff http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=31951-1410-R930H&lpage=none. If you need thicker padding then that I use this http://www.acehardware.com/sm-ace-poly-foam-window-a-c-seal-5-pack-ace--pi-1301198.html Both work great are cheap and easy to cut and fit.

Wow, nice work. I would make the flashlight actually work though, then maybe after a nuclear war you can pick up that set and start killing raiders.

I picked up more Sintra last night. $38.50 for a 4'X8' sheet. I think that should be enough to finish the costume. I finished the base of the left shoulder. It's huge. My wife asked me if I was building a chair :) I still need to mud and sand it, add the flanges and lifting lug. Once I get it all together, I'll post another picture. I ordered my hoses and modified the helmet again. I swapped out the left visor tube for something larger and more to scale (1/2" tubing). I'll post those pictures with the shoulder pictures; Hopefully by Monday.

Thanks for the help Sigma-LS. I'll look into those.
