Power armor-love it or hate it

Post » Fri Mar 05, 2010 3:52 pm

Hey guys, just taking a poll here. I never played any other Fallout's except for 3, so i do not know if Power armor was available for use in the other versions. but for me, since day 1 of playing Fallout3, i found the various versions of power armor to be just a great addition to regular types of armor, and i remember that getting that power armor perk from gunny in the original version of F3, and/or from completing OP: ANCHORAGE, was my #1 priority because i wanted my character to look really bad-ass, and get the really high DR bonus as well. My question is, how much has power armor factored into your gameplay? do you always wear it, sometimes, or not at all, and if not at all, is it because you don't find it that important, or you just don't like wearing it? :fallout:

Factors in very little. It looks cool, but usually I sell the T-45d power armor (Standard PA in Fallout 3), in the rest of the series T-51b Power Armor is an 'icon' of Fallout like how Vault Boy is too.

Getting power armor was one of my main interests when playing Fallout 3. I was glad when I finally obtained it. But now I don't wear it at all. I lost interest in the armor. I just prefer clothing or a light armor. I like wearing additional attire.

do you not wear it anymore to add a more 'realistic' feel to the game, as i am sure you take a lot more damage without it?

so, if you were to guess, do you think the T-51b Power armor will be available in New Vegas as well? :tops:

Depens on the character; my current stealth focused character doesn't wear PA, my Energy Weapons focused character uses only Tesla Armor (thanks to Mothership Zeta one is obtainable very soon :)), and my Tank uses any PA as soon as possible (which usually means the winterized T-51b).

Edit: T-51b should be the standard, i think i heard that people were concerned if T-45d is in the game at all. And who knows about the APA and it's variants

Yeah i love the T-51b Power Armor. it is my overall favorite, with the Hellfire Armor as a close second. is there a reason you would choose the standard version over the Winterized version of the T51-b.?

I've never used it in well over a year of playing on any character. Mostly for aesthetic reasons, I prefer to not look like a robot.

The Winterised T-51b you get is the simulation version by accident, as such it's practically indestructible (extremely high item HP) which to some people may seem like cheating. Also some could think the green version fits better to the wasteland than the white one, and it is more challenging to get.

No, that's never crossed my mind. I guess I wanted something less bulky and more character exposing. Plus the power armor effects didn't apply to me. Not like they have to, but I normally wear something that fits my character. I'm never in an irradiated place long enough for radiation resistance to matter. Energy/fire weapons are my least favorite weapons in the game. My strength always ended up at 10 so any additional strength effects didn't matter. Some armors came with minuses in agility and I'm already slow as it is. I'm sure I take more damage, but by half way into the game that's no longer a factor. My character is pretty tough to kill. Maybe I've played it so many times I know what's to come. I'd just rather head-wear, glasses, and ranger armor/duster.

I love power armour, I love T51b, Advanced and Advanced Mk II power armour :fallout: I even love Fallout Tactics take on those models.

I hate the PA in FO3. Enclave Power Armour and the tin cans the BoS have svck. It's due to not having Damage Theshold....

oh, alright that makes sense. i do kind of feel 'invincible' wearing the Winterized version, thus taking away some realism from the game. maybe i will switch to the standard version. thanks.

yeah, i have heard of that. what exactly is the difference between damage resistance and damage threshold? i ask also because i hear NV is going back to having this threshold thing, and i have no clue what it is.

If I do, it will be only Hellfire. Usually I don't, unless I need that little extra boost to carry stuff home.

I didn't think much of vanilla power armour, but between Impervious Power Armour (Adds the damage threshhold back in) and Powered Power Armour (Adds things like upgrades, "overdrive" modes, power requirements for suits without/with depleted nuclear power packs) I'm having an awful lot of fun with power armour!

You're not supposed to take damage in power armor, thats the point of power armor.

But I prefer the Stealth Armor.

To put it simply, damage taken must be greater than the damage threshold for it to apply. Say a PA has damage threshold of 15, attack that normally does 15 damage doesn't do any damage when wearing said PA, while attack that does 16 damage goes "trough" the armor, and it's damage is calculated normally.

If you play on PC, there is a mod "http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13325" that adds damage treshold to Fallout 3.

well... i only know what DT means, can't remember what DR is. If your damage threshold is 15 for example, and someone shot you, and their gun only due 13 damage, then you won't take any damage. (look on other threads, theres been loads of talk about it)

T-51b armour is in New Vegas. There's a screenshot of a BOS patrol wearing it, as they should be.

Anyway, I love the history of power armour and the idea of it, but I think it's really a bit crap in Fallout 3. It doesn't really look all that big, and you should be a walking tank with it -- I can still get killed by Reavers even if I'm wearing my Wintersized if I'm not careful enough.

With that said, I do like my T-51b. It looks beasty and it's DR is very good (wished they had DT, as well). It's invincible, yeah, but in my opinion that actually makes sense... even if it is actually just a glitch.

However, I don't really wear my T-51b armour that much anymore; I like to don Autumn's Uniform and just sit around and let my companions do the killing for me. Oh, and the Ranger Armour is pretty nice, too -- I wear that sometimes.

I'm a big fan of Power Armor, but the vanilla versions in Fallout 3 are pretty poor. I ended up completely reworking the stats and effects of all the versions in order to get them to be worthy of the name.

I prefer the Ranger Armour, it has 39 DR, which is close to Power Armour; it's Combat Armour, which can be repaired with other Combat Armour, which is common if you have Good Karma. (Talon Co. hit squads)

Power Armour is heavy, difficult/impossible to repair, and needs Power Armour Training before you can wear it. The T-45d Armour needs other T-45d Armour which only comes from BoS/Outcasts, or finding it in the wastes. T-51b can only be repaired by merchants, and unless you use the bug in Point Lookout, it can't return to 100% condition. However, the 3 different types Enclave Power Armour can be repaired easily.

I agree. I think it's kind of ridiculous that Ranger Armor, which leaves your arms uncovered, is so close in DR to Power armor, which turns you into a tank. I normally start with the Armored Jumpsuit, then move up to Talon armor (those scuzbags come after me pretty quick), then get combat armor, and finally Ranger armor. I only go with power armor if I chose Eugene instead, and I go with the Enclave variety.

But I prefer handing most power armor over to the Outcasts. One suit will buy me enough RadAway for the whole game.

I've never been big on power armor. I don't like clunking around, feeling like my character is about to explode like a can of biscuits left in the car on a hot summer day. If you made me pick a power armor to wear I'd pick Tribal Power Armor for its AP boost. I much prefer Leather Armor or Recon Armor, but that's just me.
