Well, I can't get the holotapes to work at all. I followed the instructions on where to place the sound files, how to make the dialogue then how to assign it to a holotape and it still isn't working. Tried mp3, ogg and wave and the only one that the geck will even recognize is the wave files, does nothing with mp3 or ogg files.

Damn...that is no good :( There must be a simple solution to this...I just need to think of it now :P

EDIT: yeah I've noticed (for me at least) that all sounds MUST come AFTER the FX folder or they won't play

Maybe try just putting them into data/sounds/voice/

I had problems adding just one sound to the game (A laser sound)
it was really really picky on the format 16-bit mono saved without meta tags etc
and even then sometimes it wouldn't play at all in the GECK and would randomly play in the game

what are you using to convert the sounds, Audacity?

Here's a tutorial for doing sound with the TES CS, someone posted
they said it helped them add audio to Fallout 3 by following it

I'm following that as we speak(already have it bookmarked) and it has only helped with the .lip file generation attempts I have made. I am trying something else atm now, will edit this post to let ya know how it goes.

Edit: that did nothing like usual. I wish I knew just what the hell I was doing wrong.

The only time anything will play is when I make a new sound(using .wav) and then go into the dialogue and when I select a sound file(and it gives the preview) I can hear it, but I can't play it using the built in play button when making a sound file, and it wont work in game either.

Edit: weird, it will preview the sound when in the FX folder.

instead of data/sounds/voice/uno/

try data/sounds/fx/uno/

wilm0chimp put his voice files in the fx folder instead of voice
also it looks like his files are 16-bit mono 11khz

Nope, because now instead of the tape not playing anything it CTDs :banghead:

Edit: Yup, tried it four times now, no go, CTD every single time.

Save the file as WAV

try 11khz or 22khz mono

Put it ANYWHERE inside the data/sounds/FX/ folder as long as it's in the FX folder it will work

Add it to the GECK, DO NOT CLICK PLAY, just click OK, then right click on the wav file and pick EDIT, now you should be able to play it.
It just worked for me that way after trying it out just now

Well, using your method I can preview the tracks inside the geck, now to see if it works in game.

Edit: yep. It would appear that anything used in a holotape from the FX folder causes a CTD.

OK, have you tried converting to OGG, and putting them in

data/sound/fallout3.esm/

worth a shot, that's the path of the default voice files for NPCs etc

I'm trying, but everytime I try to access that folder in the GECK it hangs then goes unresponsive on me.

Edit: oh sure, now that I say that this time it didn't crash and I can access it

Edit2: also, whenever I use an .ogg file the GECK doesn't recognize it, the little box just says "add sound file" instead of the path/name.filetype

Well, using the .ogg file netted absolutely nothing(thought it would just because the geck doesn't recognize it) so I am right where I started. Well, a little farther because now I can get files to preview in the GECK.

Miaximus rocks. I just got a chance to sit down and I actually whipped up a working holotape. Apparently what I was doing wrong was that you have to crop your audio files down to be basically the same size as the 150 character text limit then let FO3 patch it back together in game. I still have to trim the audio down a touch(too long of a pause between each patch) but they work now. So audio tapes should be in and working in. . .30 minutes? That is seriously how easy it is.

Lol, yeah. So far the most time consuming part is actually cutting the audio down. I have to take the text file of the lines and chop it into sentences then cut the audio to fit with the sentences. It is getting a little annoying that the GECK/FO3 puts such a huge gap of nothing between each clip, but at least they're working, which is ultimately all that matters.

Well, at least your post didn't have this in it :banghead:

:P

Are you getting rid of the dead air at the beginning and end of the new clips that you're chopping up?

Yeah, but when linking the files together the GECK/FO3(unsure just where exactly the linking happens) puts in about four seconds of nothing and then the next file plays. I have them going just as soon as they start to compensate, so it sounds like the stock files you gave me with about another .5 to 1 second in between each clip. Nothing I can do about that though.

Edit: DOH! I had to start over with the audio(my previous clips were cut wrong so I just started again from the source clip) and I got tapes 1-3 right, and tape 5 right, but I forgot to make tape 4 mono  so I have to redo it. But once that is done all the tapes are in and working(and I even got dinner started too)

Well, this is a new problem, for some odd reason whenever I try to load an exterior cell I get an error saying the GECK can't find the textures for certain human(oid) bodies which I am not even using on, in or near the cell and then it crashes.
