Practically Unbeatable Odds

I don't know if many of you are familliar with the mines of moria in Lord of the Rings. But if you do, remember the point where there were nearly thousands of orcs chasing the fellowship. Would you like to experience this kind of need to just run away in the game?

Yes. The problem with most games these days is they make them far too easy so everyone and their mom can beat them.

Sad but true. It's bad design philosophy in my opinion. A good developer develops their games like they are playing chess against the players who utilize their content and enjoy making players earn what they get. When there is no chance to fail, there is no chance to excel.

i think fighting a god (alduin is the nordic version of akatosh) classifies as practically unbeatable odds.

I don't think they can manage having hoards of enemies in a game like this. But I do think the dragons will prove a worthy challenge.

Spoiler
Judging by the conversation tree that has been leaked, it seems that the best you can do with your first dragon encounter is escape.

It's better than trying to run and end up dying tired.

A game can still be challenging and even difficult without the COMBAT being the difficult part.

Not to say developers should challenge their audience but I would be more interested in the entire design challenging me than just combat.

Good, that will please my mum.

I've never enjoyed practically unbeateable odds, getting killed is no problem, having to reload over and over and ov......well, you get the picture.

I've always fled in every game! Eveytime I saw a new thing in Morrowind I'd just be like HOLY [censored] WHAT IS THAT!?!? And then run away

That's true to a point, however not entirely relevant when the back bone of a game is it's combat and related mechanics such as leveling and player progression.
