Praise be to alduin! wait....what?

Post » Sun Nov 21, 2010 10:46 pm

so i am a big fan of the series and i decide to do something...buy oblivion for my pc! (currenly only have it for my ps3) but game of the year! i open it up and look at the back of my septim...N'wah!!! is that skyrims symbol? now is on morrowinds cover so i didnt think it was a big deal, but the coin said praise be akatosh which reminded me of him the dragon i wont go into much detail due to spoilers, but I relized that skyrim/coin symbol was akatosh due to the text and the fact he is a dragon so is akatosh...*shivers* alduin or is he going to be that dragon shout where we summon a dragon to fight with us? so i looked akatosh up on uesp and i find this: "Akatosh (Auri-El to the Aldmer and Alduin to the Nords) is the chief deity of the Nine Divines (the prescribed religious cults of Cyrodiil and its provinces), and one of two deities found in every Tamrielic religion" what in oblivion!? please share your thoughts

Nord religion and the Nine Divines are very different.

But it would be awesome if Alduin was actually Akatosh deciding to scrap this Nirn and make a new one.

EDIT (Info from UESP):
Alduin is the Nordic variation of Akatosh, and only superficially resembles his counterpart in the Eight Divines. For example, Alduin's sobriquet, 'the world eater', comes from myths that depict him as the horrible, rauaging firestorm that destroyed the last world to begin this one. Nords therefore see the god of time as both creator and harbinger of the apocalypse. He is not the chief of the Nordic pantheon (in fact, that pantheon has no chief; see Shor) but its wellspring, albeit a grim and frightening one.

Akatosh has multiple personality disorder. He used to be known as Alduin and Auriel, but then the Cyrodiils thought two separate, but similar personalities wasn't enough, so they made Akatosh, a personality that is practically a 180 spin. Blame Alessia, that [censored].

Akatosh is not Alduin, although they are representations of the same spirit.

Not only that, but Akatosh is not the only spirit that created Nirn. Many lesser Aedra are stuck in Nirn and have become the Earthbones, as well as the other greater Aedra that have sacrificed their immortality.

So it's not like Akatosh could just wipe out Nirn and rebuild it, even if he wanted to. He is probably the Greatest Aedra, and the others have a hard time existing without him, but he still can't just take apart Nirn without them. All the Aedra are a part of Nirn.

What makes Tiber Septim a God?
Mantling. Which roughly/loosely breaks down as you praise something enough it becomes what you believe.

Imperials praised Alduin for protecting them from the daedra- Alduin becomes Akatosh.

Martin destroys the Amulet of Kings, and after 200 years Akatosh loses favor. Thus he is free to become the world eating Alduin again.

Don't get it? Don't agree? Doesn't matter because it's all speculative at this point.

Akatosh is not Alduin, although they are representations of the same spirit.
They are the same being, viewed differently. The Dawn was an era of non-linear time, so when time did become linear, things had to be rectified. This is why the god of time has multiple personality disorder. Also, belief really influences the gods.

Not only that, but Akatosh is not the only spirit that created Nirn. Many lesser Aedra are stuck in Nirn and have become the Earthbones, as well as the other greater Aedra that have sacrificed their immortality.
Correction, it wasn't just Akatosh who cut pieces of himself to create Mundus. It was Shor/Shezarr/Lorkhan's creation, but used the pieces of the et'Ada, now known as the aedra (though it wasn't limited to the 8).

So it's not like Akatosh could just wipe out Nirn and rebuild it, even if he wanted to. He is probably the Greatest Aedra, and the others have a hard time existing without him, but he still can't just take apart Nirn without them. All the Aedra are a part of Nirn.
Alduin has eaten previous kalpas. Plus, it was not the god of time who created Mundus, it was Shor/Shezarr/Lorkhan who did. Plus, 2/3 god of time aspects want Mundus destroyed. It's only the relatively recently created aspect, Akatosh, that doesn't.

Well, whether Akatosh and Alduin are one in the same, confused to be the same or not, or whatever the point is...
Both are badass, and one of them I've gotta kill.

Hellmouth you said that you were correcting me, but then you just repeated what I said. I think we are actually on the same page? You might want to double check your post.

Also, I tend to think that the stories of Alduin having eaten previous worlds are just legends or stories. I don't think he actually has. He might have caused some great destruction that was misinterpreted by the mortals, however, I could believe that.

Obligatory link:
When you consider a place like Tamriel, sometimes it's best to take titles literally. Alduin is the World-Eater. It's not going to be "the end of all *life* as we know it," leaving a barren wasteland of Earthbone dirt... it's going to be the whole of Nirn inside his mighty gullet.

"None shall survive" has been a calling card for awhile, but that was only a hint to the more extensive "Nothing will survive."

Unless, of course, there's a loophole. Say, something like the someone called the Dovakhiin happening to show up..."born under uncertain stars to uncertain parents." (An aside for extra credit: what in the Aurbis makes the Prisoner such a powerful mythic figure?)

The Eight Limbs (and their Missing Ninth) have always, always made sure there was a loophole. Sometimes to their detriment, sure, but more often a hedged bet to ensure the survival of the current kalpa.

Then again:

Alduin's shadow was cast like carpetflame on east, west, south, and north...[he was] epoch eater. For as far as any man's eyes, only High Hrothgar remained above the churning coils of dragon stop.

And Alduin said, "Ho ha ho."

It's obviously happened before, so sabers sharp, and may your varliance shine bright.

Both Nords and Redguards believe in that myth. Altmer have a myth where Auriel, the same god, will turn them back into gods (which probably requires destruction of Nirn).
I doubt all those cultures would share the same myth... Nords in Skyrim, Altmer in Summerset and Redguards from Pydonea... too much of a coincidence

Not to mention that when Pelinal was overcome by the madness of Akatosh, he would cause extreme destruction cutting great swathes of land into the void. It's in his nature to destroy the world.

It was my understanding that one of the thins the greater Aedra sacrificed was their own immortality. By doing so, they helped to ensure that Mundus could not be destroyed. It's persistence is linked to their immortality.

I don't know how that relates to Nirn specifically, but I was more or less convinced that you can't destroy Nirn without all the Aedra reclaiming their lost aspects.

What the heck is that quote anyway? Is that a lore dev?

Which is maybe what Alduin/Auriel wants... but Shor (Lorkhan) gets in the way and creates a new one somehow.
I am currently playing with the fact that those plains of Oblivion might be destroyed worlds now taken over by Daedra, but wouldn't put my money on that.

Akatosh is the most powerful Aedra and thus the most powerful god. Even if he was not Alduin, he does exist in some way... probably due to mantling if he didn't before.
But looking at how Loremaster's talk, seems that Akatosh and Alduin are split personalities of the same being.

The summoned dragon is probably just one normal dragon who doesn't serve Alduin (Empire used them in some of their conquests). Something more powerful then that would be over the top.
