We still don't know what the M1911 will be chambered in. There are 5 possibilities, I suppose:
1. 9mm. There is a slight chance it will be in 9mm. I doubt this will be the case, since there is little room between the 9mm and the 10mm pistols, where such a weapon could slot. M1911s have been chambered in 9mm (as well as other rounds) IRL, but I really don't think this will be the case.
2. 10mm. The weapons could be chambered in 10mm, slotting it in a range above the 10mm pistol, but lower than the .44 magnum. This seems to me to be the most likely route, but rationalizing two pistols, with similar barrel lengths, having any reasonable difference in damage is a tough thing for guys like me. Still, I believe this is what we'll likely see.
3. .45ACP. It is possible that the .45ACP cartridge will be added to the game. If this were the case, it *should* slot in somewhere between the 9mm and 10mm rounds, almost at the level of stock 10mm. This seems a little counterintuitive, since there would seem to be little reason to introduce the new weapon if it simply mirrors one already in the game. Of course, realism could be ignored, and the round could be positioned as more powerful than the 10mm, ala how the shorter barreled Police Pistol does more damage than the longer barreled .357 Revolver using the same ammo. I consider this an unlikely scenario, since either changes to the ammo availability from vendors and loot will have to support this, or, as a way to balance the more powerful weapon, ammo will be somehow limited to the DLC only, with some means to collect limited stocks after completion.
4. .44 Magnum. There is a very slight possibility the weapon could be chambered in this round. Semi-auto pistols have been chambered for the .44 mag IRL, but realistically speaking, the M1911 frame really isn't strong enough for the round and rimmed revolver rounds usually have some serious drawbacks when used in semi-auto pistols. While it is a remote possibility, I seriously doubt we'll see this.
5. .40S&W. A final possibilty would be to implement .40 caliber ammo as a sub-type of 10mm. This could slot the weapons between the 9mm and the 10mm, with a decent amount of plausability, and allow the use of a low-powered ammo sub-type in 10mm weapons. While not completely realistic, it's not outside the realm of possibilties, seeing as how some degree of artistic license has to be expected since it is a video game. Likelyhood of this is extremely low.
