Figured I'd take a break from the lurking I've been doing the past few months to give my two cents. I haven't been in the whole buying games on teh interwebz thing for long, so I don't have a long list of instances, but I'll mention what I've had happen thus far:
Wal-Mart: I pre-ordered Fable III from Wal-Mart.com (not worth $60 by the way, but at least I got a $20 gift card with it) and received it at around 12:30 P.M. on the day of release. My only complaint is that they forgot to include the villager code - a universal pre-order bonus all stores had - but about a week later sent me an e-mail apologizing for their mistake, as well as the code I was due. They did remember to include their unique bonus (some hammer and tattoo set or something) in the day one package at least, which makes me a little less worried about pre-ordering Brink there due to the entire bonus being unique.
Amazon: I've bought a fair amount of things from Amazon recently, but my first pre-order with the site is actually Dragon Age 2 (Got the signature edition on the last possible day, WOOT). I selected release date delivery, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that one. However, everything I have bought from Amazon directly - meaning not from a third-party - has been delivered in a timely fashion, getting to my home quicker than the estimated time more often than not. Case in point: I bought Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Assassin's Creed 2 simultaneously. NFS was from Amazon directly, where I selected free "Super Saver" shipping, while AC2 was from a third party with standard shipping selected. NFS actually arrived two days before AC2. So I certainly wouldn't recommend against buying from Amazon directly.
For myself, I'm probably going to go with Wal-Mart's Spec Ops pack because I'd rather have the Heckler Machine Pistol before the Caeser Revolver, the Dogtag tattoo before the Tortured Soul tattoo, and the Greeneye Scopes before the Soda Can/Arktactical Silencers. However, I would prefer the Grin mask to the Sloani mask, and I'd also prefer to get the $10 credit from Amazon instead of Wal-Mart, so Wal-Mart's edge is rather slight.
Anyway, after all that I still haven't fully answered your question as far as which site you should trust more, so here goes: If the only deciding factor is which you can trust more, I give Amazon the edge because of their established track record, and the fact a friend of mine, who also pre-ordered Fable III from Wal-Mart, did NOT get Fable III in time, and his order was so screwed up that he eventually just canceled the order and got it from GameStop, sans pre-order bonuses.
EDIT: Lame, my avatar is gone! I guess I have been lurking too long. <_<
