Pre-Purchase on Steam, Pre-Order, or midnight release?

Post » Tue Aug 30, 2011 5:22 pm

I'm stuck. I just got a brand new, super nice PC in the mail so I cancelled my Skyrim pre-order for Xbox 360 and instead for PC on Amazon.com.Now I've been getting into the whole Steam deal with downloading games as I please (lovin it!), so I'm wondering If I should just download Skyrim the second it comes out on Steam and downloading it, rather than waiting for it later that day in the mail?

Help!

The game is going to require activation through Steam no matter who you buy it from, so the only advantage to not getting it through steam, is if you are on Dial-up, or if you want an actual game case. If you have fast internet and could care less about a case, get it on Steam. You can predownload it 1 week prior to release (At least you can for like 99% of major releases) and then play it at like 12am Pacific Time on the day of release.

My friend got me the Collectors Edition, so I'll be picking that up at the store.

Get the physical copy at midnight. I'm getting a bunch of my school friends and we're all going. We get a free map, the case, and it's steam compatible. As much as I love steam, I'm doing it like this cuz Skyrim is special :D

Picking it up at the store, even though I could just as easily buy it on steam. I just like having the case. Plus, the map will look nice on my wall.

I kind of want to get the actual box, but I'm also pretty lazy. So I might just go with Steam.

Well I haven't bothered to do anything yet, I'll just wait and see.

it's not yet confirmed, but there is a good possibility we will be able to download the Steam version a few days early, pre-install and then it will unlock at 12:01am PST.

This has been the case for several of my last few Steam pre-orders, including Fallout: New Vegas, but with the exception of Witcher 2.

The only way to know for certain is to wait until a week or two before the release date.

I already pre-ordered on steam. Hoping they allow pre-download like they did with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I played that right at midnight, so hopefully Skyrim will be the same.

I almost forgot about the whole pre-loading thing... I'll probably just get it on Steam, then, and play right at midnight (or 1 am or whatever it will end up being for my local time)
Although I will have school the next day, I could always skip one day...I think mid terms are usually done by then so I won't be too screwed over missing one day.

Has Steam being a requirement been confirmed? I rather like the auto updates they do. Also, pre-loading is a huge plus, and never needing the physical media. If I get Skyrim for the PC, I hope you can buy a physical copy, register via Steam, and never need the discs again. Steam is my favorite DRM for PC, as it actually adds convenience.

Yes Steamworks is confirmed.

Any discussion about Steamworks and DRM needs to go here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1224956-unofficial-steamdrm-discussion/

Get it on steam-most likely Pre-load so you'll be able to play it the second it comes out, no need to wait in line in front of a store. However, you won't get a physical copy of the pre order map, so that kinda blows.

Get it Retail, get a nice little map, but won't be able to get a head start in front of everyone, if you're the kinda guy who likes to be ahead of ppl.

So do you want to play a few hours later and get a nice map or be able to play it the second it domes out?

Because if you dont care about actually having a physical game case and disc, wouldn't you rather play the game at 12:01am the day of release?

I will buy the cheapest option - which would ironically be a boxed case.

 What I was referring to was your incorrect usage of the phrase "could care less", which denotes that you do care about something, and there is the possibility that you might start to care less you do at said point in time. The phrase I believe you meant to use would be "couldn't care less", which means that you do not care about something, and do not possess the ability to care any less than you already do.

I think you will need steam to make regular updates in order to play. Not sure anyway.

You will need steam. Woithout steam you will not be able to play. If you unistall steam it will uninstall all games associaited with steam including Skyrim. SKyrim uses steamworks.
