Pre-War Religions in the Wasteland

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:07 am

I was afraid of that which is why I tried to make the OP was game-relevant as possible ie. "Where in Fallout are religions referenced, alluded to, etc."
Damn shame so many people saw the need to voice their personal, non-fallout-related opinions concerning religion in here...
When religion is mentioned on the internet, it is inevitable.

It's interesting to discuss religion, but this topic is not about that I know :P I just answered a question "what religion would your character have" and gave a reason as to why, I refrained from replying that guy who seriously took offence of my post :P

So, what more pre-war religion is there in Fallout? What have we missed?

I'm a christian. (waits to get attacked by atheists) Jk JK don't hurt me! (except for the chrisitain part but I don't give a damn about what other people beliefs are so..)

Now to bring this back on topic there is an explanation on why people could still believe religion in Fallout. Maybe there is a cult somewhere that thinks that God or whoever respective religion they believe in let it happened because of Humanity's sin. Also in the Bible they did mention that there would be a battle between humanity in a God forsaken wasteland. (See what I did there? :) ) correct if i'm wrong because I only read a few chapters in the bible. (I may be Christian but i'm not that into it.)

Now onto the major religions. Islam in my opinion will definitively have some survivors. After all there are over 2 billion of them in the real world. That is unless Islam died out quick in the Fallout Universe. We also may have Hinduism, though you may have a better chance at finding them in India/ Southeastern Asian countries. The same applies for Buddhism. I doubt Judaism will make it since it's a small religion and most of the followers are in Israel which might have gotten nuked by Muslim countries in the great war. (after all both religions hated eachother)

For the smaller religions chances are do to their small numbers they may have gotten blown up by the nukes and the survivors dieing of in the wasteland. Now If you disagree with what I said you can kindly post a reply pointing it out. :)

I think that fits the New Canaan′s describtion (the mormons). They try to teach the tribals and talk [censored] about god and stuff.

Respect and regret from the Sink :fallout:

Fallout is so unrealistic the absence of Christianity isn't even an issue. That said if the Fallout world were more realistic Christianity would play a major part in the game world. If anything the Apocalypse would drive people to religion out of a need to believe in a greater good for their existence and would blame the greed of the pre war world for the nuclear Holocaust much how the Legion blame technology and consumerism. In times of crisis religion grows not declines. The lack of real organized religion of any kind is unrealistic and I think holds Fallout back. They could easily have a new religion take the place of Christianity but no general atheism/agnosticism is what I've seen.

I ont know if it would play a MAJOR part, but perhaps it would be present. Like some wastelanders turn to god for guidance in the waste.

Me personally? I turn to my rifle and armor for guidance lol.

I'm sure almost every large and respected religion survived somehow in someway even if smaller groups broke off and changed the views of it slightly overtime to fit the state of the world now.

Alternatively, it may drive people to renounce their beliefs because they question how a religious deity could allow for such atrocities.

Following the end of the Black Death in Europe, individuals began to question religion and specifically, the Catholic Church, which led to one of the first major chinks in its (until that point) seeming impregnable facade.

True but I still have doubts that religion in itself would become a rarity in Post War America. Maybe Christianity would change it's form but it wouldn't just stop being practiced. Some of hybrid form of it or maybe a revivalist style would arise but no religion at all for the majority of people? That's hard for me to see happening. In any case we'll probably see more religion in Fallout since they tested the waters with Honest Hearts. Although i've always wondered why they just didn't make some new religions up to incorporate the themes in game.

What I wonder is...

When they had a meeting to decide which religious branch DEFINITELY survived the apocalypse, they apparently said "well the Mormons, obviously."
Yeah ok. WHY? xD

Josh Sawyer himself has said that he is fascinated with Mormon history, and in an area like Utah, it's extremely likely that at least one of the vaults in the state is comprised almost entirely of Mormons. So that was probably where the logic came from with Van Buren, and obviously it was adapted for use in New Vegas. Makes sense.

As for my character's religion, unless I roleplay a tribal, they don't have one. I often play an intelligent wastelander type, which means that they were never raised with any sort of religion and they see past any new wasteland superstitions.
