Predict the problems with Skyrim.

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:56 pm

I predict that Skyrim will be text-only input, like the old skool text adventures from the 80's...

You are at a junction. Exits are north, south and West.

What Now?

n

You go north. In front of you is a minotaur.

What now?

Oddly enough, I don't see this as the worst case scenario. *loves Zork* :whistling:

What, may I ask, could possibly be worse?

I predict that many people will be either so disappointed, or so blown away that they will kill themselves. :shakehead:

The draw distance will be lower for consoles, the interface and text will be uncomfortably big for consoles, the texture resolution and model quality will be lower for consoles, and the environments in general will probably be quite a bit more closed off, thanks to consoles.

Add in a reasonable number of bugs an glitches for a new game these days and fully voice acted dialogue (severely limiting player choice), and you have yourself another consolized elder scrolls.

Uh I'm 100 % percent sure that its going to be the bugs and glitches it happens in every Bethesda game thats been made before they make a Patch for example the Darian Money Glitch, The Infinite Item Glitch, Paint Brushes being stuck in midair and acting as a footstool (Handy at times I'll admit that).

Just so long as we aren't complaining about a lack of spears, I will be happy. Really, why would there be no spears in Skyrim, Norseman used them all the time.

Even for a hardened cynic like me - and I'm critical to a fault once I get my hands on something - this thread is too much. I like to hold onto a little optimism.

People will complain that it's dumbed-down for the masses compared to Oblivion  (worst case scenario). I really hope Bethesda are taking us fans seriously since I've read some fantastic suggestions on this forum that, if implemented, will make Skyrim a masterpiece and not a disappointment.

I really am anxious to see what direction they've taken it in. I hope Bethesda has listened to long time fans and is not just watching the revenue stream from Oblivion. I don't care which game you prefer, there were definitely design decisions in Oblivion which were flat out, a mistake. And almost all the improvements came from a technical standpoint, in terms of graphics, physics, etc, which will naturally get better with time. The complexity and maturity is what sets TES apart from games like Fable, Zelda, etc, which are also good games in their own right. But not the games I am interested in playing, and not the games I'm used to seeing from Bethesda.

People will complain it gets too easy when you reach the higher levels because the game doesn't use as much level scaling as Oblivion.

I think this is what the difficulty bar is used for. If you put it half way or further the game is extremely difficult.

Personally I think that if Fast travel is included or the map marker, it will set the hardcoe TES fans off in a mad rage. Who cares about mainstream gamers? These games are made for the pure fans who will play it for years. Not the people who will trade it in after 2 weeks.

While this is my opinion too, you have to look at it from Bethesda's point of view. They are a company, and they want to make money.

Therefore, they might market the game a bit more towards the mainstream than we on these forums like, because that'd sell more copies to the gamers whose current idea of an RPG is career mode on FIFA.

Why? Fast travel exists in 3 of 4 TES games. If anything, "hardcoe" TES fans should expect it to be there and embrace it.

Realistically, I'm betting animations, as it seems to be a trend. Not expecting too large of a skill resurgence, nor a massive expansion of dialogue. Usage of mechanics that I personally disagree with, such as Bethesda's last two reputation implementations and fast-travel instead of in-world travel methods.

But I think the worst thing with Skyrim will be everyone hyping themselves up over it beforehand. The game can never compete with the imagination.

Tons of easy-to-fix game and quest-breaking bugs will exist after the last patch

Wouldnt be surprised if it was unplayable on PC right after release

Ok, so this thread is here so we can try to predict what aspects of the game we'll be complaining about once it's released. We need to accept that Bethesda can't make the perfect game. I genuinely believe the game will be the best in the series, thus becoming my favourite game of all time, although I think there will still be bugs with texture load-in, sub-par voice acting and combat which leaves someting to be desired.

Thoughts?

Some may argue there's nothing truly perfect in this mortal world, but would you really go so far as to say that TES isn't the closest thing to a perfect RPG/fantasy universe/series there is?

I expect below standard NPC appearance (i.e. they'll all be ugly and it will also be hard to impossible to create a good looking player character).

Repetitious voice acting (every elf sounds like any other elf) and disconnected dialogues ("I've seen a mudcrab this morning." - "I see." - "I agree." - "Goodbye!")

I also expect several critical bugs in the game mechanics, quests and magic system; meaning that there will be need for another unofficial patch and perhaps a code project again. As usual, I mean.

Also, I expect another example of a totally broken leveling system as usual. ("You must watch out that you don't accidentally use one of your skills too much so that you forsake your perfect 5-5-1 upgrade in the next level up!" / "The higher your character's level, the harder the game will get, because we'll throw Giant Ogres at you then!")

All that said: I also expect to have no life anymore as soon as I get this game. :)

These are mostly Oblivion problems; I wouldn't say they are "usual" amongst the series.

When it comes to apperances, I'm not playing a catwalk simulator; it's an unclean fantasy world so I don't expect everyone to have perfect faces. I'll be trekking through mountain ranges and dungeons, bashing creatures in the face with things. I don't care if there are ugly people! If they're ugly AND uninteresting, then I'd have a problem.

Not really. These problems were prevalent in both Morrowind and Oblivion. I didn't play the older TES games, but I think it's likely that they were also present in these.

Also, I don't everyone to be pretty in a game. But there's a difference between normal looking faces and the horrors of un-BetterFaced Morrowind or of vanilla Oblivion's shemales.

Instead of a quest compass, there will be flashing arrows on the ground and your character can only walk 10 feet away from those arrows before he snaps back into position.

The sword fighting will be a series of combos that require the player to press 3 buttons and then watch his player do 20 strike combos that the enemy can't dodge or block.

Fast travel between cities will be mandatory.... MANDATORY! The world outside cities will only be viewable from small windows in the cities walls.

There will be only 3 suits of armor and 5 weapons available and they must be bought from shops or given from a quest, you can no longer take weapons and armor from fallen foes.

The main quest will move on in real time, the player can no longer deviate to do other things, the main quest is all that matters and once it's finished the game can no longer be played again, ever.

Next logical step!
