My premature review.

Post » Tue Aug 17, 2010 7:42 am

So let me begin by saying I'm an SD vet. My favorite game of all time is RTCW. I'm very familiar with the gameplay in Brink as its pretty much ET. This is from the 360 version.

Graphics
==========
Bad. I can't sugarcoat it. I know that there is supposed to be an update and I hope it improves the graphics but as they are right now they are not good. The textures don't load quick enough when you move fast so it looks blurry. These graphics will not impress anyone. Mark my words.

Multiplayer
==========
The bots are dumb. That is not a problem for me because I play MP but since not many people are on I've been forced to play against bots quite a bit and the AI is less than acceptable. Sometimes my team will have to defend the objective and the opposing team won't even try to get the objective until like the last minute of the game. That is just one example.

So far there has been quite a bit of lag. I'd say 70% of the games I've played have lag. Maybe its because the limited amount of players right now don't have good connections but we will see. So far this is a concern. As a result of the lag the game comes across as glitchy. Like when you climb over stuff you jump over it twice. That's just one example.

On the bright side when I do find a good server and good human players.....Brink is a lot of fun. It is fast paced and really requires teamwork to win. It's the first game that has ever reminded me of RTCW gameplay. I have a feeling private matches and clan matches will be fun. Public rooms will be hit and miss with lag.

Also I really like the inclusion of public match options like standard, advanced, competitive and old school playlists. Competitive playlists for example limit players to 5 per team and have ff on.

Gameplay
=========
The movement is very cool. As I play more I've been getting better at strafing while shooting and evading bullets. That wasn't the case when I first played it. Stick with it and you will be rewarded. When I get a 1 v 1 firefight its usually whoever has the best aim and movement wins....if its a good server. I've had several epic 1 v 1 fights in tight corridors where we are both strafing. I had one against a heavy with a shotgun and I outmaneuvered him in the corridor with strafe shooting/hipfiring and parkour sliding....very cool. The shooting is pretty accurate. There is some bloom in the reticule so burst firing is a must. It looks like hip firing will be a viable option most of the time. I've been killing people who stand and ads pretty consistently with strafe/hipfiring/parkour.

As you get more perks it feels like the game speeds up. The first couple of rounds I played the game felt slow but as I picked up abilities I was able to do things like sprint and reload, sprint and cook nades, speed up the timer for nades and ammo, etc. This really makes the gameplay faster so if you are disappointed at the game speed when you first play it...give it time. It gets better.

Customization
============
Not really much I can add here. You guys know pretty much everything from recent threads. I will say that it adds a little strategy and will keep people occupied. There are customization options for private matches which are fairly limited. There is no weapon restricting. You can customize time, player count, ff, voip, buffs, gametype and rank restrictions...that's about it.

Overall the game has promise and I love the gameplay. My major concerns are the lag and the graphics. Both are unacceptable for current gen. I hope the 360 patch fixes it.

If I had to assign a rating for the game I would say 7/10. If they fix the lag/graphics issues its probably an 8-8.5/10.

You need to remember that SD is primarily a PC-based developer. This is their first venture to consoles. ET:QW doesn't count; it was a port done by a totally different company.

and AI

I'm a PC player and I have seen some of the AI and admittedly been a bit worried. Is it actually supposed to be better on PC and PS3, because I think all the gameplay videos(non official) were on Xbox, so that might explain the AI.

Can you give an estimate on the average kill time against a medium player? 2-3 secs? How many bullets?

I couls answer to ech one BUT,i'll answer in general cause my answer is in your title,"premature " says it all.

It don't feel fair to critisise something by videos and i'm not talking about Brink only.

Also,i don't care about graphics in a game,it may make a game look cool but i'm not in for that only,i want balance in every aspect of the game and my primary focus is gameplay,secondary community and then all the rest.
I respect your views though.

Edit: premature (to give an anolysed review) for me i mean :)

It depends....if u get headshots....u can kill fast. Shots to the body? About 5 to 6.

I thought AI was supposed to be really smart, almost human like, unless the patch fixes it.

I am also concerned for the bot AI.
From the videos I've seen I cannot tell what difficulty the person is playing on. I believe this achievement implies there are different difficulty modes. Which I hope improves the bots.

This is the achievement:

Tough as nails
Win all storyline campaign missions (not including What-If missions) playing either Online Versus, or in Hard mode

I'm not concerned about the bots. If there is different difficulties then the bots will have a significant change in AI. And I'm positive you can manually set the bot AI in a multiplayer match. The graphics...well I really hope the patch fixes this. If Brink bombs on the 360 I'm going to blow up a short bus. :banghead:

Fix graphics with a patch?

It had better be a seriously large patch then.

Very much doubt that will happen.

For all we know most of the AI coding is part of the patch, so I'd pay no heed to these early 'reviews'.

So far from the vids I've seen, the texture loading is a bit slow like games with UE (GOW, bulletstorm)
I hope it's only an issue for console...

For the AI, they seem to be with high teamwork. I think that organizing a full-team assault on objectives is hard for AI.
Can you talk more about how dumb the AI is?

Thanks for the Review.
Very interesting. I don′t think a patch will fix graphic but graphic is not important its all about Gameplay.

Nope,i'm quoting to explain :) :

ALSO, Here's a review made by someone who gets it:

First off, I want to say that yes I have played Brink. Only for about an hour, but I have played the actual game. Thus why I only say this is my first impressions. As to WHY I have played Brink, the answer to that is simple. I work at a brick and mortar rental chain (not BB) and have pre-street rental privileges. (interesting fact, I beat Portal 2 the Saturday before it came out)

Also: Apologies for my atrocious use of comma's.

EDIT: Since it has been pointed out I have completely neglected Gameplay I have spoilered my gripes.

Gameplay wise, Brink has a lot going on. there is always a primary objective and quite often more than one secondary objective. At first, these are very hard to keep track of. The objective wheel does a good job of helping resolve that issue though, so you can get right to the objectives. Also, since I could only play single player (I'm on a PS3) I was impressed with the bot AI. If they went one way first, and I went another way, they would often times come after me (shouting about backing me up). Brink absolutely punishes lone wolf attitudes, often times because your gun runs out of ammo too quick to do a lot of damage. you need your team mates to be re-supplying you. As a team based shooter, this one shines by making mechanics require team play.

Getting around the map quickly is a breeze with the SMART system. Chest high walls are fun obstacles to get over rather than cover. You can also go sliding into an opponent to knock them down. Pretty fun. It also means that ledge you think is protecting your backside isn't, so pat attention to your radar.

Your character starts out pretty puny at first, having no abilities (you can't reload or throw a grenade while sprinting without ability points spent properly) but this is probably best, because there are a lot of abilities to unlock (both universal and class specific) that gives even more gameplay options. The game is not for the faint of heart. I was pleased that the basic abilities will get you by. Everyone can throw frags, and most guns can be used by each body type.

Objectives flow nicely, First blow a door, 2nd hack a safe, third deliver safe contents to point X, escort person from point X back to blown door and safety. I'm not sold on the escorts, but the other goals are fun and create some tense moments in the midst of an already intense fight.

I have an idea if all this is true then lets just give up on the game screw it all the game is going to be a complete waste of time. Who needs that since we have all played it and the game is clearly a terrable game. We should tell the other poeple out there thinking of wasting their money on this lame excuse of a game. <_< . But on the bright side at least i wont have to worry about playing with a bunch of Whiners :biggrin: . Oh i'm sorry was that to harsh? Well good (Not if anyone is with me on this don't really care) i'm sick of poeple complaining about this game. Has anyone played it yet? Has the game come out? if you can answer those honestly then by all means complain.

I honestly stopped reading when he said "Multiplayer: The bots are dumb"

There's a bunch of video's I've seen of this game, and streams in 720p ... and it looks great. Xbox has graphical issues but it also is goanna be patched on release day so it's really not even fair to bash the graphics before then. Not much anyone can say that will sway my opinion because I have seen it first hand. Only thing I can't properly judge from this point is game length and how tight the controls are.

I think a huge amount of the dissapointment from people is because they built this game up so much in their head, thinking you could put on any combination of vests/shirts/buttons/ties/collars/hoodies up and down or whatever. And that goes for most of the game, not just the character customization.

I just posted a guys review if u saw,a very positive one,meaning everyone's opinion can be different.Others opinion are nothing more like a bit of info,we all have different tastes and perspectives.
Don't be offended if someone has a negative opinion on the game,so what?They don't define you or the game,we must respect theirs as we want ours to be respected.
