When I load up Skyrim on my PS4 I'm greeted with a screen that asks me to press any button to continue. What is the point of it? Why doesn't it just go straight to the screen where I can select Continue, New, Load etc?

It's not a menu, that's what comes after it. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose.
You're right, it doesn't serve any purpose. It's a remnant from the arcade days when you had to press a button to get out of attract mode and into the menu. It's mostly kept out of tradition and since there are never any serious complaints.
^^^ This. I like it being there as a small nod to the arcade days. I don't see it as a hindrance so dont think it needs to be removed.
As C4B4L says, it's just a tradition with video games, and definitely not exclusive to Bethesda games. Some games do more elaborate transitions when going from the title screen to the main menu or sometimes come with a cool sound effect when you press start. Just some extra fluff is all.
At least no one is complaining about finding the "Any Button"
I've had computers since the 1970s, and every one of them has been missing that key. It's very frustrating.
