Preston Garvey: Just Venting

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 3:07 pm

Preston Garvey is no friend of mine. Here’s the thing, he appoints you as General of the Minutemen and yet he bosses you around. He spouts his: “I got word of another settlement that needs our help…blah….blah.” And then just walks away. What is he the freaking President or something?

The other thing that annoys me about Garvey is having to chase him down every time I come back to Sanctuary to report in. It literally makes me angry to have to do that. Even in real life I don’t chase after anyone. Frig that! I wish there was another option to complete Minutemen quest.

I'm keeping him around long enough to get his perk, then cutting him loose.

I couldn't stand his constant stream of never ending quests that was made even worse when they accumulated because finding a new settlement would trigger one whether I had spoken to him or not. I had four Garvey quests going and if I went out and completed all four of them he would give me a new one for each one as I told him the job was done ... so the number would never drop below four, but would have eventually hit five as I accidentally triggered another new one out there.

Normally I have a rule against using mods on my first play-through so that I can experience the vanilla game before I start modding the hell out of it. But Preston forced me to break that rule and install http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/3456/?. Now he's much easier to get along with.

Yep.

I've got a couple of his quests in my log and honestly the way I feel right now, I'll never do them and I'll never go near Preston again. I've pretty much abandoned the Minutemen and the whole settlement thing altogether.

That's how annoying his whole never-ending-infinite-loop quest system is. Hell with that noise.

I've got a feeling this topic will just keep coming up over and over again.

I concur. As far as I am concerned he and the dog, along with the constantly whining Longs should be executed. Shot the bastards and put them out of my misery---as well as theirs.

Also, the thing with the settlements aka farms there are many more in the game and on the map than the damn constant looped ones. The other thing that annoys the hell out of me is that those settlers that ask for help who say the same [censored] thing over and over and over again. Apparently Bethesda's writers are inept or just plain lazy. The other idiotic thing that gets my blood boiling is the stupid USS Constitution quest. Obviously some of the quest were designed for the kiddies. I am an advlt and I want to play an advlt game. Oh well, such is life in the gaming world.

I agree, I try and avoid him every time I go to Sanctuary in fear of hearing "I've heard of another settlement that needs help". I like the fact they've included radiant quests, I would just prefer if you had to at least ask him for them rather than just getting lumbered with them just for walking near him.

The one problem with ignoring Preston is that it can impact settler happiness. My Sanctuary happiness level was ~32 and dropping, even though all resources were in the green. I found a thread somewhere saying that if you have outstanding crap to do for Preston, it can be the cause.

Sure enough, I completed the next of his pending quests, and happiness started trending up with no other settlement resource changes.

I left him at Castle with the rest of the 5 Minutemen, so he can't drag the settlers down with his nonsense. Although I'm not sure I care if they're happy or not, none of them can dig a well or even lie a sleeping bag on the floor without my help. It's maybe better in the long run to just let the raiders wipe them out.

Talk about a bunch of helpless people, Jesus Christ. I am beginning to side with Cait on that one. "If you want my help pay me. I f you need to defecate, I am not wiping your ass. I am not your mother or your slave." I am really having trouble doing my second pay through, because of all this crap.

Wait, there are other quests he gives you aside for the initial one and the movie theater and Tenpines and that other place? Seriously, I didn't know that.

Yea once you get to a certain point he just starts spitting random settlement quests at you. It's annoying because when you turn it in, he immediately flags the next one for you. You can't even walk away and come back later to pick it up, so it just never ends with him. I finally got sick of it, let one fail, and I haven't been back to see him since.

Yea, out of the possible dozen settlements throughout the Commonwealth you are only sent to about six of them and even though you have build them up and added defenses you are looped back to the same ones; because, "the Raiders, the Bugs, the Molerats, the Ghouls and the Super Mutants are back. What's that song, a song that should be themed in Fallout 4: "Cry Me a River?!?"

And what's worse, is sometimes it's not a settlement being attacked directly - it's raiders on the other side of the map who apparently just NEED that particular mutfruit so they hoof it for miles and miles to attack my 2 people and their 4 trees. Some of it is so absurd.

Really, well that could explain why my settler happiness has dropped so much at Sanctuary. Damn...I suppose I better get on to a couple of them.

Say no the General thing and he will never bother you again. Unless you want to do the Minutemen story. If that is the case, well then it svcks for you.

I think it's annoying that you have to turn in every quest to two different people... talk to the settler, then talk Preston Garvey... over and over.

Yes, and it is always the same damn verbatim dialogue. What gets me too is having to replenish every damn workstation in the Commonwealth. Thank god on on a PC so I can cheat.

If you set up a settler route from your main settlement to the smaller ones you will always have access to the stuff in your main workstation.

The Minutemen quests are incredibly repetitive and annoying. They're kind of glitchy too. I keep having to do the same Minutemen quests over and over. I've done the "Kidnapping at Abernathy Farm" quest 2 times already, and it recently got assigned again. I still haven't taken the Castle yet, so I'm wondering if it could be due to that.

These quests would be cool if there weren't so many of them that were basically the same quest in a different location. I like the general idea...helping people and bringing them over to your side so you can build a defense network around the whole map. That's awesome, but it could be handled in a way that makes it a lot more enjoyable.

It is. once you complete the castle Preston will be available as a companion again and the calls will starting exposing the rest of the settlements you haven't discovered yet.

So would have i if he couldn't be ignored. With the previous, current and all future characters, "When Freedom Calls" remains unanswered :P
In plain English, i ignore them completely after they head for Sanctuary from the museum. And i never enter Sanctuary, just to be safe :hehe:

You ignored him too late. In my second game I left him in concord - now I have only sometimes settler quests, and happiness is fine in my settlements. Much less kidnappings, so I ahve to assume now Preston is somehow the cause of all those kidnappings ...
