Preston "there's another settlement" Garvey is going

Post » Thu Mar 03, 2016 12:39 pm

-an actual walking, talking, nightmare during survival mode. I just thought of that... I have 4 missions in backlog from him at any given time, and if I even so much as glance at Garvey, he mentions another settlement that needs my help. When I turn on survival mode, he's going to get banished to the farthest corner of the map, never to be heard from again, anyone with me? I mean, this is the guy, who I mentioned I was going to do something that was plot critical to the main story, and he agrees with me, (because y'know, the quest marker was over his head, and it said to talk to him to continue the main quest) and I'm thinking, okay, he's going to help me, and give me what I need for the next step, and HE CUTS HIMSELF OFF, AND GOES, "but before we can do that, I've just gotten word of another settlement that needs our help" Sweet baby Jesus, I wasn't sure if Garvey had become self aware, and was breaking the 4th wall there Deadpool style, and going along with his meme! ...It would have been like the greybeards up in High Hrothgar telling you right before heading outsite, that before they could train you in the way of the voice, that they'd need some help with an arrow in their knee...

His missions are already mind numbingly tedious and monotinous (spell-check) as it is with the ability to quicksave and fast travel... But, by the Gods... That'd be a death knell to hear him say that, that one home in the swamp needs my help with another "problem" ... Run all the way from Sanctuary, kill off an entire super mutant patrol for the 5th time in the same place, (with the bodies still fresh on the ground from the last time I did it) then run aaaalll the way back to Sanctuary, only to get randomly one shot by some legendary glowing deathclaw or something that showed up out of nowhere just as I'm crossing the bridge... I'll be having nightmares about Garvey tonight.

?*fetal positon*

?"n-no mommy, n-no more settlements... no more settlements please.... no...n-no, not that, no please, n-not another settlement, no, NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

?*wakes up in a cold sweat screaming*

Forget that, I can't get through a Bethesda game without fast travel, it's way too tedious. I like to explore and look at the scenery sure, but when I just want to turn in a quest, or multiple quests? I don't wanna run back and forth traversing terrain I've already run across.

:lmao:

I'm in that terrified, sweaty, fetal position myself. For this and so many more reasons. Mostly enemies popping up 10 feet in front of me, cause, ya know, drawing distance is sooo much better... Reloading my game is going to become extremely monotonous. B)

Yeah I like walking also but time is the issue with me. I might be able to squeeze in a hour or two each night, but I don't want to spend half that time just running from point A to point B.

As far as Preston is concerned, I've sworn off the MM. As much as I LOVE using artillery it just isn't worth it anymore. I'll just give settlements to the BoS for credits and be done with it.

Sleep to save is just plain dumb.

Kind of meh on no fast travel, sort of do that already (but I'm not silly enough to, lets say walk from Sanctuary to Concord, and then walk back to Sanctuary, as others have mentioned).

I guess Bethesda's idea of an update is to take away features...

In my last two playthroughs, I left Preston and his group of misfits in the Museum to ponder their fate. When the updated SM comes out, that's exactly where he'll be left again. I know he's a good guy, just trying to help people out, but I'm not going to be his pack brahma and I damn sure ain't going to do it in SM.

Garvey drives me nuts. Sat on his backside all day and telling ME to go help them. Am I the ONLY Minuteman Garvey?

I have had my revenge by dressing him in stupid clothes, like bathrobe & slippers, or red sequin dress with high heels, and he sports a pompadour wig. It helps just a little bit to see the sanctimonious **** looking foolish.

I've done it without fast travel. It's fine. The time limit on his settlement quests is extremely generous, and you'd have to fail a ton of them to lose alliance with a settlement. It becomes a "when I'm in the neighborhood" thing. Plus, if you've already completed the objective and returned to the settler you can wait for the timer to run out instead of talking to Preston, and it auto-completes. By the time you get Radio Freedom set up, you can just get all your quests from that and you won't even need to talk to Preston.

I posted this in another thread about Preston and the Minutemen Radiant quests.

My next play through will see Preston waiting in the tower for some fool to rescue him.

Since 1.3 I have got like 1/10th the preston quests. Used to have 3 at a time, now it's rare I deal with settlement attacks more than anything.

well, the safest way for you to travel would be using the vertbird. at least it's better than walking

you can avoid Preston completely, by saying 'no' when he asks you in Sanctuary, whether you want to join the Minutemen

haven't got a single radiant quest from him so far since ^_^ seems to work

I've managed to avoid him altogether so far by never setting foot in Concorde. Hopefully that museum had a well-stocked snack bar because they're going to be there a while.

I'll say again the only fix, the only fix that Preston needs is to have his dialog changed so that we actually ASK for something to do as opposed to it just being forced upon us. Note the RR does this a lot also with their quest. Turn in a MILA quest, get another one without asking. Seems only the BoS bothers to ask you if you are ready for another quest.

This was directly addressed in one of the latest patches. His quest assignment rate should have been cut to 25%, and I don't believe you can ever have more than 3 at one point.

running 1.4 atm, Preston abruptly stopped giving me quests. told he will let me know if something arises. this was after getting 2-3 at a time and settlers giving me some themselves. so who knows what's to come!

But I most likely will avoid MM in new survivor mode. At least until new settlement DLC arrives!

Garvey is the whole reason I'd like some dlc that involves the BoS destroying the minute men and taking full control of the commonwealth. Seriously, unless those quests of his get redone, I think in my next through I'm just going to walk up to him and shoot him in the head with a shotgun.

I guess then it is true! So nice not to catch myself calling coworkers "General" and instead whistling those same 8 notes!

True but that's not the right fix. The correct fix would have been to not have the quests forced upon you. Let you ask for them.

In prior play-throughs I'd carry three "Report back to Preston" quests in my quest log for most of the game. Take the quests, complete them and then never speak to the man again. But seriously there wouldn't be so much Preston hate if it was set up more like the BoS where you have to agree to take the quest before it's added to your list.

This is pretty normal for Beth titles based on how Papyrus works. You may have to wait for up to 30 in-game days for scripts to clean up, refresh, and the new script to kick in. So, Preston may take a while to read the memo. (Honestly, I think the initial settings were a bug. To me, the new values seem much more sensible.)

It isn't just Preston, though. Settlers will also give you radiant quests(go rescue my friend), settlement defense missions don't require anyone, and there is the Castle and minutemen radio which will also give quests. The biggest problem I see with the new survival mode and no fast travel isn't Preston, but the settlement defense missions, which technically could make you run across the entire map. I think that would become a hassle nobody wants to deal with, masochists excluded.

^ I literally just had 3 settlement attacks in a row around two days ago.

The second one popped up few minutes after first one. The third one popped up when the second one was cleared. One at Murkwater, another at Graygarden, then lastly at Warwick.

These plus 'defend the checkpoint' quest popping up when I'm running nearby to assist my settlement.

Like seriously. lol. I dare to bet that Preston was just chilling with a cup of coffee at the Castle.
