Pricing Scam

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2016 3:36 pm

I think its pretty bad that on the XB1 market place its £49 for a digital copy yet only £35 at Game or Amazon for a physical copy

Bethesda this is totally wrong, please sort your pricing policy out

You would think a copy where you don't get a disc, a case, or art work would be cheaper than a copy your sharing with everyone else

due to supply and demand, as well as convenience, physical copies of games can usually be found for cheaper than a digital copies non-sale price (found a copy of XCom 2 for $15 a few weeks back)..

The pricing on XB1 market place is the suggested retail price. Stores and companies can sell the product for less or even more than that. The other stores you mentioned are likely taking a cut on their profits but hope that you purchase more from them to offset that cost. This is how a free market works.

Yes the Digital Copy should be cheaper but when it comes to XB1 and PS4 market places they have much less competition so more often than not they just sell at Suggested Retail Price and offer a few deals here and there.

[edit] I mean the market places have less competition in regards to the Digital purchase.

There is no "pricing scam" happening.

That's what it boils down to. Hard copies sold everywhere so they compete with each other but Xbox has a monopoly on digital copies, there's no competition if you want a digital copy for xbox one..

I take it, to be clear, you mean buying on line direct from M$ store through your XB1

If yes....what do you expect?

Just about everything purchased via M$ is top dollar

Their actual console prices on-line are also laughable

They can charge as they please

I would never buy via Xbox online unless there was no alternative

Why line greedy pockets?

Unfortunately, this is what the digital market always been like, not only on the Xbox Market Place, but on Steam, Origin, Playstation Store, you name it.

Some Xbox guy (I forgotten who) defended it in an interview back in the Xbox 360 days saying something about how you pay extra for the convenience to be able to buy and play the game while just staying on the couch at any time of the day, without going out to a store.

Which is just a lovely piece of justification. They get to double down on their ramming of customers. They charge us more for the convenience of not having to go out while at the same time saving money on not having to make and distribute more hard copies. They're giving us a reach around while going at it from behind and saying it's all for us when we'd rather they just stay on their side of the bed.

Yeah, it's all [censored].

That said, if you have the patience and wait, the games will eventually get noticeably cheaper in digital stores than physical copies will ever be. Don't know how many excellent games I've bought for €5 or less in the past decade. Even the cheapest physical copies tend to be around €10 here, but €20 is more common.

But it's always been that way since the days of the Sumerians. You pay extra for convenience. That is nothing new.

What convenience?

Listen...I can order the game as a physical copy....have it shipped from e.g. Amazon or from Tesco right to my door for free....I don't have to "Go to a store" so the argument for steeper digital price is utter balderdash!

They charge it as long as you keep paying it.....thats the bottom line.

Well usually with digital downloads you can start playing the game way earlier than Amazon will deliver it to you (by "way earlier" I mean a matter of several hours; that's a big deal to some folks.).

Some cases you can go to the store and pick up the game before it is officially released and play the game at least if it is a console version and as long as it does not need internet to play and that could sometimes be a week before release maybe even more depending on when the store gets the game.

I will likely be the last one to make a character to level 100. I do not think I even made a character that has reached level 50. About half my characters get deleted after finishing the tutorial section since I love playing the tutorial.

With an Amazon purchase you generally have to wait at least 3-4 days to a week+ for the item to arrive vs a hour or two for direct download. And there's always the chance that the Amazon seller made a mistake and sent the wrong item or the item is defective and then you have go though all the hassle of filing for a refund and whatnot. Don't get me wrong, I prefer buying hard copies of games of Amazon or from a store but for pure convenience, downloads win IMO.

True, that's happened with Mafia 3. The game cases did not have the CD keys and it's been 4-5 days and people still can't play. On the other hand I pre downloaded, installed a 2gb update and was playing a half hour after launch.

One would think that, if one was ignorant of all the forces at play here. One might also think that because Bethesda made the game it's their fault. One would be wrong there too.

I never heard this. I'm not saying it's not true, it's just that I go there all the time and haven't seen any advertisemants of the sort.

EDIT: I had to come back and correct my abysmal typing skills.
