Pricing of the game on Steam, seriously? 49.99拢=78$...

Truth is most countries now have exorbitant entertainment import taxes and in some of those countries digtal download is placed at the higher end of the spectrum sometimes on an individual product basis.

Yeah, I'm most familiar with the US system. Seems odd that the digital version would be more than the physical, anywhere. (I wonder if anyone has a "internet commerce outside our country" tax/penalty)

Bethesda can't do anything about it - Valve are the retailer running the Steam store, Valve can put whatever mark-up they like on.

The only thing you can do is complain to Valve. Or not buy it from them, and wait as long as it takes for other stores in Brazil to stock FO4.

As far as I know, here in Denmark, if we were to buy from eg. the UK or Germany, we would pay their "VAT" and no local, seeing as they are both members of the EU. Buying from the US would add the normal and higher Danish VAT.

Atleast in regards to physical products bought online... Steam seems to treat the pricing as locally bought tho.

It's not Valve, it's the Brazilian government. Given the high entry prices there lately(only to be lowered later) seems they have adopted a blanket tax on import requests until said product is examined more closely. Give it time to sort itself out.

That doesn't explain FO4 selling on Steam for $78.50 (£49.99) in the UK - especially as Amazon UK are selling the physical game for ~$60 (£37). You may be right that there are some tax issues going on in Brazil, but I doubt that's the whole story.

Give it time friend :D a sale on steam may happen I believe The Witcher 3 was 10% off before it was available. I only know this because I didn't have the money to buy it during the sale and got it a couple days after the release at full cost. . . worth every dollar great game!

Actualy, many countries have taxes, even on digital distrebution. I believe VAT tax is one of those used by the US, not sure though how that works.

There is no tax issue as you can see all the other games in the list have the price as normal only Fallout 4 cost is insane and out of normal, plus there is no tax in brazil yet for digital goods.

In Australia it is known that physical sellers of games actually do have influence over Steam/Valve to the point where often prices on Steam are inflated to match the shop price. I dont know how local stores get so much power but there have been anecdotal instances in the past where the Steam price was a lot higher than it should have been so the shopfront could compete.

I dont think its a common practice and EB games were one of the parties here but its definetly been done.

Yeah, but I was thinking more about an additional targeted penalty/import duty/fee type thing. Just the general tax rate wouldn't account for the digital version being more expensive than the physical.

Did anyone ask Valve/Steam about the price? Or are the people to busy to blame Bethesda for this...? Maybe steam has a better answer... Or it was a technical mistake by Valve...

This is why I almost never buy new (digital) games from Steam or any other online retailer. I buy them when the games have been out a while or GOTY editions. Because they ask me to pay 10-30% more than I would have to if I could pay in dollars instead. I buy physical copies from the same online retailer year after year. I save about 15$ doing so, including shipping cost.

It's ridiculous, what is the point if digital is always more expensive? From the same store I buy physical copies, btw, they also sell digital copies for about 10€ more. It's beyond ridiculous really.

Kinda reminds you of the old argument that DVD would become cheaper than VHS. Because of less weight and taking up less space in storage and transport.

That never really happened either.

Think about it. Companies set themselves up for X price. They sell at X price. Then a newer way to store the game (in this case) comes along which is is actually half the price to make compared to the prior option. Do you EVER see the price fall to what it logically should be ? (assuming the customer knew the price for the new storage medium).

Answer: You dont. The price either remains the same or goes up.

Yeah prices never goes down when a new medium is introduced. Stores sell at the highest price because they can. If they can save money on not having to store they will NOT lower the prices to make it cheaper for us, they will just increase the price to make more money. Greed guides them.

Oh what a free market it is...

Yes, it's a free market. Know how you make them realize their practices are unacceptable? You stop buying their products at the high prices and wait for them to go on sale for >=50% off.

They continue to sell games at $60 because the public continues to buy them for $60.

Does not work. Companies operating in a monopoly market (while steam has competitors , nobody else really offers exactly what it offers) means they can get away with whatever they want to get away with? Dont like it? Dont use them. You will be replaced by 2 people who will pay it.

And suggesting holding on on the purchase is very good advice.

It just does not work. People wont wait. Its new, its out, they want to play it. So they will pay the price. Its how the gaming industry has always been.

None of which changes the fact that it IS a free market. It's just one that's not behaving the way you want it to :P

Obviously the answer is to make me dictator of the world... :D ...

...

Well it's equally consumer responsibility. Prices would definately change quickly, if everyone said ... Nope...

This is something I've wondered about recently. Some recent AAA games including fallout are £49.99 on Steam, yet less than £40 for a physical copy on amazon. The Witcher 3 was £29 I think.

Are publishers putting a high price on steam to make people buy elsewhere, therefore not having the ability to claim a steam refund?

That would be pretty low if true, but I doubt that. As someone said, it's largely the retailer who sets the price. Valve is just prone to making stuff more expensive than it ought to be. Amazon prices cheaper to entice people to buy from them instead. Sometimes Amazon prices low enough that the specific item is selling at a loss, but they can absorb it for the most part.
