Prima Game Guide (in two additions!) Confirmed

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 1:23 am

I'll admit, I was a little worried we weren't going to see a physical game guide, what with game wikis making physical guides obsolete in many ways. But look! Physical game guide confirmed for a Nov 10 release date at gamestop, and in two versions no less! One's $30 and one's a $40 "Collector's Edition"- any guesses as to what that will mean, beyond it being hardcover?

I know a lot of people are going to scoff and say something to the affect of "anyone who wastes money on a game guide when you can get all that info for free is a chump," but I would humbly disagree. Physical game guides certainly aren't for everyone, but there's something immensely enjoyable about learning the contents of a quest from someone who A: writes well and B: is clearly passionate about Fallout. David Hodgson (the guy who wrote the Fallout 3 Guide) was a joy to learn from, and many a time I would pull out the guide after a play session just to read his take on what I had just done, or take a look at other quests I could take on later. His style of providing both staggering amounts of raw detail for the completionist, mixed with his detailed take on the lore behind each quest gave a much more complete picture than what you get off a bare-bones wiki.

I don't see any reason to think getting one is dumb

i mean yeah, you can get all a strategy guide's info on a wiki for free plus a lot more side info on bugs, exploits, item values, whatnot

but i always saw guides as collectibles

the uesp is hyper helpful, but i still love my morrowind guide just for the sake of the memories and its humor

if you want it, that's totally fine

it's your cash, spend it on what makes you happy

I've never bothered with a game guide before, but I actually just ordered the Prima GOTY guide for Fallout 3 (it was surprisingly hard to find). I don't need a guide for playing the game, but it looks like a nice book to have, and thoroughly documents a game that I love. :fallout:

I pre-ordered mine, I just hope it's reliable with information. The last one I got was for SWTOR and it was less than accurate.

The only difference between the Skyrim versions was one was Hardcopy. May have had the map also ... don't recall if both versions that that. I got the hardcopy version ... which I really regret since I never really used the thing (it just sits here on my PC desk).

If I get one honestly Its probably just to make my bookshelf more gamey. They tend to also be great mousepads...

I have nothing against them, it's just that I don't trust their information very much. They usually have more then a few errors.

Bethesda guides tend to be pretty entertainingly written. I usually get them to read in the bathroom.

Not dumb at all tbh.

I got a Skyrim guide and don't regret my purchase. I read through it every now and then, even if I'm not playing Skyrim. I might be weird though

another +1 for game guide vs wiki pages is that the wiki takes some time to get better fleshed out and most times they dont contain any enemy info unlike game guides that have all the info you need at the games release.

I'll get it because I like books, I won't have to wait for online guides to be written and filled out and it might have extra info about some lore and how the systems work

I pre-ordered Fallout 4, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be getting a Prima Guide with it or not.

I like to just learn everything myself rather than have someone else tell me what to do. Plus it ruins the adventure when you know how everything happens and ruins the mystery when you know how everything works.

Those dump characters aren't much better. My fondest memory of EVERY game I played is my first time through. I still wish I could relive my first time through skyrim. Now I thoroughly know where all the good stuff is and it makes it boring. Can't imagine paying money to kill my first through of fallout 4...

Ioved the prima New Vegas guide. And love the wiki...

Question here: if they release the game guide on Nov. 10, I guess they have early access to the game. There must be very few, select people with that kind of access? Also, they will base their guides on a unfinished game?

How long do you think they had access to the game ? Months ago? Or maybe they will only have access to the game from september of this year..?

I always thought they asked devs what the secrets are and stuff, rather than playing normally until they figure out everything.

Just because I buy the guide doesn't mean I am going to use it right away....it's for the replays, not the first run.

I'll admit to using guides (physical or digital) on the first play-through for some things, and that's why I like having the option to get a game guide, just to be able to check why I can't get past a part or looking up alchemy combinations (FFX-2, Dragon Quest 8, and a few others). I feel that they're very useful for those kind of questions at the beginning, as the wiki may not be as full right at launch, as it would be 6 months down the line.

EDIT: Bad sentence structure is bad.

For a game with the scope of Fallout 4, an official guide would actually be very useful. Even for those of us who tend to just dive in and start exploring, with so many potential hours of gameplay, it can be helpful to have something to refer to with details of various weapons, systems, and other important info.

And also Bethesda's guides tend to be quite awesome! :read:
