Prima Games article about Crafting System

Post » Mon Dec 07, 2015 4:38 pm

Just watched on YT the weekly Fallout Friday from Eurogamer, and Ian talked about http://www.primagames.com/games/fallout-4/feature/fallout-4-crafting-system-scavenge-and-create from Prima Games about the Crafting System.

It was published almost 3 days ago, so I don't know how it was not posted here (at least I didn't see anything nor could find anything through search).

I didn't read everything yet, but this paragraph is really interesting:

"This extra step in the creation process adds depth to the Fallout 4 crafting system. Anyone can create a basic house, but can you create a house that lights up, with wheels and a steering column so you can drive it around as you travel through the area? The potential creations that occur when you tap into a computer terminal are considerably vast. It should be interesting to see what players can do with this system once the game is available."

What do you guys and gals think? Maybe the crafting system is more extensive than we thought?

Wow, they've got a bunch of Fallout 4 articles with details that I haven't seen mentioned in the official articles and videos. Thanks for the link!

Edit: Actually, there's not that much new info, but still some good reading there.

I'd much rather see more survival mechanics tbh.

If they really went that far with the crafting system, who's to say that they didn't do the same with survival mechanics? 24 days to go and we'll find out (maybe less if Beth give us more details before launch).

Don't think we will have anything like drivable homes but I'm still interested to see what's available

"To help alleviate this potential problem, you can mark an item you want to craft and the game will inform you if you come across items that can be directly used to create the desired object, or can be broken down into the raw materials required for crafting."

Well, that's kinda neat to have.

I don't know if it was base gameplay or a mod, but i remember crafting gun improvements in FONV. Every gun could get 3 mods, and each mod needed 3 pieces in different quantity. Keeping track if that was such a chore. So I'm well pleased :)

One of my main concerns for this game is how overwhelming crafting is going to be. I'll be going klepto mode even more. Although I do enjoy crafting in FO:NV/TES:Skyrim, I do get overwhelmed grabbing crafting items for the sake of RPing.

*just hope creating a settlement(s) won't become too much of a chore is my main concern*

Heh, I hear ya, and I think settlement-creation likely won't become a "chore," except in the sense that I'm probably going to become obsessed with it to the point of neglecting the rest of the game. :D

I'm definitely looking forward to the new crafting, building and weapon modding systems - and so, one of my greatest hopes with it is that they really took a hard look at how clunky and cumbersome the UI was from Fallout 3 and New Vegas and make the appropriate fixes. Scrolling through tons of items or trying to grab the small scroll bar and find an item that's listed amond a hundred others in the misc item section was such a chore and the inventory management was too time consuming and inconvenient - so here's to hoping they saw this, and improved it. This will be especially important in Fallout 4 since more items have more uses so we'll be picking up and managing even more items than other games, it seems.

And on a side note, I liked how mods like Project Nevada in NV gave you the option to rename items for better sorting, like carton of cigarettes became cigarettes (carton) and pack of cigarettes became cigarettes (pack) and subcategories of items were given a prefix like aid, book, part, mod, etc. What are the chances that Bethesda even put forth the effort in doing something so helpful?

Didn't John Lennon have an acid trip where he thought he could drive his house? I'm pretty sure we won't be able to put wheels on our house and drive it around, at least not without a copious helping of drugs.

The article focused more on settlement crafting, but I'm more curious about weapons myself. I understand it's largely the same system, though. It does seem like Bethesda's system is actually robust though, instead of just throwing in a ton of extra steps and crafting components that serve only to craft one thing.

The bit about driving around the wastes in your house sounds like a complete guess by the author. Everything else in the article comes from the e3 presentation; I don't think the author has any more information than that (probably specifically so that they can't accidentally say anything they aren't allowed to yet).

Well, we can rename weapons now and there's a SORT button in the Pipboy menu, plus it looks like the inventory categories will be a lot more organized. So actual prefixes in the item's name (which I honestly hated) will be much less necessary.

Still, nothing about ammo reloading, aid/survival crafting, or explosives crafting. Thanks anyway. Nice to know that we can store the items we break down at the workbench, and don't have to carry all that garbage around though.

I didn't know about a sort button or renaming weapons, neato. Where can I find the info on renaming? I've watched all the videos and read several articles, but never caught the renaming or sort info haha. And I actually totally agree, I didn't like the ugly subcategory prefixing either but it was a necessary evil considering what a nightmare of a headache inventory management was without it.

I never had that much trouble with inventory management. >.>

Anyway, during the crafting footage when they're modding all of the weapons, we can see a [RENAME WEAPON] option on the bottom of the screen during the part where the modding is "done", and the weapon is rotating around. It wouldn't surprise me too much if the same could happen with crafted armor, since we know we can craft that too (S3 perk). We could rename anything we enchant in the Elder Scrolls games, this seems like the equivalent for Fallout.

I'm with you. I'll try to build a nice settlement and be creative, but I'm also more interested in the weapons crafting. Gun Nut will probably be my first perk (if I have access to a workbench at level 2).

Yeah, I took this part with a grain of salt, but since they are the ones writing the Fallout 4 official guide, they should have privileged information.

Ermagerd, I can't believe I missed that haha! Granted, I've been trying to resist the urge to pause every frame of every video to see what I missed, I did that for Skryim and it was a bit much. Thank you, you beautiful person. I'm looking forward to giving my weapons bada** or silly names, or references to movies or comics.

Someone there does have privileged information - but I really doubt it's the person writing their web content.

There is a Cooking Station outside the Red Rocket in the E3 video. It is highlighted for about 0.5 seconds.
