I get the TES guides. They don't cost that much in some places like amazon (got game plus guid for $77 plus $10 amazon credit, so thats basically like paying $6 for a good back up helper). I only use em every now and then to help with some faction quests but they can come in handy.

This is so full of falsehoods that it isn't funny. Guides are for people who wish to use them. Not everyone is as "Smart" as you.

I'm getting one because I'm a collector, it belongs in the colletion of my Elderscrolls items. I will also use it once I finish the game to make sure I didn't miss anything and because I enjoy reading.

Get off your high horse and please keep in mind that everyone needs help at some point in time.

It isn't about who is smart or lazy, it is simply about some people prefer it and some don't and some in between. Yeah there is the wiki and others online. But the problem with them is they won't have any useful info posted for a few months till people start adding stuff to them.

The point of TES is experiencing the massive world for yourself - it'd defeat the point to have a massive book that details everything.

Plus, UESP will be far more detailed, and free!

EDIT: I just realized this thread is a bit old. Deleted a reply that didn't need to be made.

Anyways: I'm getting the guide for the few situations where I don't want to spend all day figuring something out, and the collectors edition comes with a map, something Steam lacks.

Hey guys! So I'm wondering if I should get the prima guide? I've never gotten one before, but I think I might get one for skyrim. Not because I think I'll have trouble but because I need something to read about skyrim while I'm away from the computer so I can lessen the effects of Skyrim withdrawl. :sadvaultboy: So should I leh get it?

I don't think so, you don't want to ruin surprises for yourself do you? Experience things for yourself IN the game :)

Get the collector's edition hardcover guide, but don't consult it until after you've discovered most of the world and completed the main quest lines.

These CE guides are the same as cloth maps, etc. They're great collector's items that are fun to have and can provide extra insights into your favorite games, but you don't want to ruin the surprise of discovering the world for yourself.

Edit: Oh, old thread

I will. Not to cheat but the guides do fill you in on character creation and game mechanics that I may not be familiar with. I'll save the quest part if I get stuck.

I will likely play the game so much that there will be things I find that won't be in the guide. Some people like to get them as more a collector's item though.

And like someone said, UESP has just about everything you will need.

David Hodgson, the writer of the Prima guide, also wrote the guide for FO3, which was very, very well done. If you don't mind getting a little help now and then, the guides are great. I only use it when I need it, but I also enjoy ticking off the quests when I complete them, which can help identify quests I've missed.

EDIT: Is that a second star I see? :hubbahubba:

I didn't open it, someone else did. I didn't check the dates.

In any case, my post still stands.

I would, but try at least one playthrough before you use it for quests and stuff. The guide comes in handy, and helps with withdrawal, lol I did that for OB. :D

I will. I won't use it except when I'm stuck or really want a random quest. But, having it gets you the info weeks before the wikis will have it. And an interesting read.

I have 3 reasons I will get it.

1. I collect Strategy Guides (Yeah I know, weird, but I've been collecting them since before I had the internet to look up stuff when I got stuck) (Give you a hint, the regular Nintendo has Strategy guides LOL)

2. If I get stuck and my internet is out or my wife is on the computer playing a game or something.

3. I do a full read after I do my first play through just to read it and learn stuff I might have missed or just gain more Skyrim knowledge.

The real question is; is it worth it to get majestic Collector's edition prima guide?

I pre-ordered the guidebook to help with character creation. Once my character is created it will sit on the shelf until my second play-through.

Having the guide is key in TES games, i feel. You can really learn how to maximize your character, and that starts with creation.

Reading it would just spoil stuff for ya. It's all about that sense of discovery and running into things you didn't know where there, why compromise that?
