Primative Grenades

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:18 am

Well, this time around we've got the 'flasks of oil' and flaming arrows to have some fun with, I think that's about as close as we'll get to 'primitive explosions' in the vanilla game.

We have? That sounds awesome actually, never heard of it before.

Anyway, some simple explosives would be kinda cool. Gives physically weaker characters like thieves more options when confronted.

I did. Where are they?

You find them in Mehrunes Dagons domain of oblivion, they pop up from the ground and explode if I remember correctly.

Dagon also had a giant walking robot with a fireball machine gun.

Check my sig. Maybe the Dwemer were better mages than we thought :P

There were cannons in TESA: Redguard, a reference to cannons in Daggerfall, the Dwemer charges in Morrowind and the Daedric Landmines in Oblivion. It isn't too far fetched for something like this to be in. (Still... No damn guns. Ever.) I would prefer it to be something more like the DR mod for Oblivion where you could throw potions and the effect would splash and do an AoE of the effect inside. The only problem is it was super OP because while the radius of the spray got bigger if you held the throw button down longer, it didn't scale the effect down to make up for the fact that each enemy wouldn't get as much poison in them. So you could have a 20 point Damage Health potion and throw it at 5 people. Instead of each person getting something akin to 4 points of Damage Health (20/5) each one got the full effect.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Soulgem throwing in Skyrim either. Basically if you captured a Goblin's soul and threw that soul gem, it would shatter and the enemy would return in ghost form. It wouldn't always be friendly to you though so you would only want to throw them as needed. The last thing you would want to do is throw 30 soul gems and spend the next 20 minutes running from 12 angry rats, 4 fire Atronachs, 7 Daedroths, 6 Goblins, and one extremely vengeful Imperial Guard.

Explosives have been around for 1000's of years. They do have a place in a world of Tamriel.

Yes i want primitive crude explosives.

Greek fire is a good example of how crude they should be in skyrim

You can't lob a fireball over a wall and it's an alternative for warrior and stealth characters with minimal magicka poolsand not very high destruction skill.

I'm sure the new and improved ALCHEMY will feature flash bombs/gas bombs/noise making bombs for the stealth characters.

I like the throwable soul-gem idea.

The Dwarves had satchel charges (as seen in Tribunal)
Something along those lines would be acceptable.

Erm, I haven't been following, but that would mean thrown weapons are in...not sure if they are?

Also, it'd be a good alternate area of effect item for melee specialists.

But, I liked the theive's arsenal mod's take of noise makers (firecrackers), grease, and gas arrows. Worked for me in both setting and tactics.

i would love throwing weapons!

Would you have to equip them to a hand in order to throw or would they be you just click them in your inventory *or hotkey* and you temporarily equip them and after you throw you go back to whatever you had before? Same could work for throwing weapons.

Maybe Alchemy could get throwable flasks that do different damage effects.

-fire flasks (direct damage)
-poison flasks (paralyze or sleep)
-acid flasks (damage over time)

It would work more like flasks having the effects of the potion on them, and you should be able to either drink it, apply it to a weapon, or throw it for a very small aoe.

A few ingredients mixed with some certain potions in a small confined glass bottle causing an explosion? Yeah, I could see it.

It's just like the way I would imagine a flask full of nitroglycerin would behave if I chucked it across the room...

Thats will be Great option for Alchemy as well as awesome option Marksman character so there will be not only bows but throwing weapons also, since Alchemy now Stealth skill nice to see some grenades potions, timed by wick or fuse time bomb, tripwire mine traps, sleeping or poison gas bombs, equipment damaging acid flasks, flammable oils, flashbang bombs for blind enemies while run away or Smoke Bombs, thats will nice option for stealth character and will endure Alchemy as stealth skill more.

Really? The effect is already in Oblivion. IMO, it's doable.

Take your basic targeted shock spell with a large area of, say, 10 or 20. Try flipping it at a wall in an interior cell. Watch everything in the room go flying, including the NPCs . . .

One thought though: in order to have explosives, wouldn't the new, non-Havok, physics engine have to allow what were previously static objects to now move? I could throw a grenade at a door and wouldn't the door suddenly have to break or implode or do whatever doors do when a grenade hits them? I mean, just throwing a grenade with no effect would be . . . kinda silly.

Why is there such insistence on including advancing technology in the elder scrolls universe?

Can't we just accept the lore of the ES universe for what it is? If you want a fantasy game with guns, then go play a fantasy game that has guns... right?
Maybe someone can help me see this better but I don't understand why everyone want to mess with the lore.

For the most part, people aren't discussing actual frag grenades with the pin you pull and lob into enemy territory. Most comments seem to be about explosive/corrosive chemicals in flasks being thrown, using the term "grenade." There really isn't anything advanced about it.
