Primative Grenades

The first grenades (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ihs.issaquah.wednet.edu/teachers/fine/images/grenade_400x300.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ihs.issaquah.wednet.edu/teachers/fine/roman.htm&usg=__lW5ClTYg48cd4AeLZQFjzxk4_Qk=&h=300&w=400&sz=23&hl=en&start=7&sig2=quSVuv3N_b1fsRbrSdZMVQ&zoom=0&tbnid=8uILJqANHhNG2M:&tbnh=93&tbnw=124&ei=OA2jTZ3YEoji0QGwhbHcCA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dancient%2Bgrenade%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1289%26bih%3D695%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1, not http://www.legaljuice.com/grenade.jpg) in our timeline were used as early as 960 AD by the Chinese and the Byzantines used a napalm-like substance made from sprinkling sulfer in tree sap. Redguards already have gunpowder and cannons so to me it doesn't break the setting. You could make other similar things like poison gas potions, flash bombs, firebombs, etc probably using smithing, alchemy, or a combination of the two. They'd be really handy to use, but scarce enough to make you think twice before just running into a dungeon and 'nade spamming.

This probably ties in with the guns thread that I've seen in a few different places on the forums.

Grenades was a bad word to use, gonna turn a lot of people off (due to the modern weapon connotation), but primitive explosives, yes.

I've only played Morrowind and Oblivion. Where does it say or in what game do Redgaurds have access to and used gunpowder weaponry?

Erm, I haven't been following, but that would mean thrown weapons are in...not sure if they are?

Also, it'd be a good alternate area of effect item for melee specialists.

But, I liked the theive's arsenal mod's take of noise makers (firecrackers), grease, and gas arrows. Worked for me in both setting and tactics.

There was a game called The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard which wasn't your standard TES game where you played as a Redguard named Cyrus. There were cannons in that game, dwemer air ships as well.

The only mention I know of is a book of jokes from Daggerfall:

Why was the Sentinel army so useless during the War of Betony?

The cannons were too heavy, so all three garbage scows sunk.

I can see how it would be a bad word to use, but by definition that's what they are.

Well, this time around we've got the 'flasks of oil' and flaming arrows to have some fun with, I think that's about as close as we'll get to 'primitive explosions' in the vanilla game.

Explosive throwable potions perhaps, but don't relate that to grenades. While they're similiar, modern weaponry is a big turnoff for TES fans (as someone already observed) whilst alchemical ingenuity is more tolerated.

Dictionary defines grenade as a small shell containing an explosive that is thrown by hand, so grenade, bomb, exploding sphere of death, it's all the same thing.

I don't think so. And I say no to any kind of grenade in TES.

There's nothing sixier than when someone gets their dictionary out... lol

I am fully aware of what a grenade is, my reaction was still the same.

No. Nobody on this forum has Oblivion installed. That is a rediculous thing to expect. :P

I'd rather have it be as "flasks" that you can throw in alchemy

I'd be cool with that, all I'm suggesting a thrown explosive of some sort.

Okay, I see the reference. Well then it's already in the TES universe.

It does not. You don't have to have cannons to be a pirate ship.

Tell that to the Somalians lol..

I don't think that guy was implying anything about pirates or their equipment, rather that he wanted confirmation of whether cannons were in Oblivion.
