Ooohhh, I like this. Varth is the Villain in my fantasy Mythos as well, as well as the MC.
Writing Villains is kind of hard. What I'm writing is kind of a satire of normal fantasy. I decided to drop the whole "good guy saves the day an gets the girl/vengeance/money" thing and made the story from the viewpoint of the major bad guy. It's hard, but great fun. I wish you luck in your writing ventures, sire!
That sounds awesome. My idea is to try and take on fantasy and mythological tropes via brute-force deconstruction, rebuilding them in the mould of a fully-realised, history-based world that comments upon philosophy/culture at both the micro and macro levels. So basically a rip-off of TES
Um, to get things back on topic though, I think the best way to approach villains is to look at real-life examples of characters we see as villainous, and work out the world in their terms. For instance, Syllawen is a character that sees herself as living in a fairy-tale, and is unable to take mundane things seriously. So she is all about the disconnect between the fantasy of nobles and reality, and What is Wrong With the Feudual System. Half of the things that have gone wrong in the history of the world are due to totally the
wrong person taking the throne, mostly out of chance. Which fits with the theme of Games of Thrones!
