Of Princes and Power- OOC Thread 4

Well, Is it ok if I just imagine Aleron and his knight have arived in Evermore? They had almost reached it and would be in by nightfall. I currently lack the imagination to capture what Evermore would look like.

and about Lorundil. I don't really know what I'd have him do now. Maybe Elissa can take him with him to Evermore? he could meet Varth who is also a fabulous wizard, ... or something.

There you go, another post. Some more attempts at describing Castle Evermore, building on what we learnt in the last few posts about Evermore. If you can't get your head around it, imagine Minas Tirith, but instead of concentric circles, complete chaos, the levels all mixed up and making no sense, bits jutting out for no reason, and all of this on the steep side of a mountain - with a normal city outside the main walls. Overall Evermore is kinda massive, but with the trade it gets, can survive, and has soaked up half the kingdom around its walls. If anyone has any more questions, just ask and I'll be happy to help. Feel free to get inventive with what you want a certain part of the city to look like.

PFA, I've just given you a basic outline of what your dudes would have seen on their way. How much you want to RP is totally up to you.

Gavril, that sounds good, having elissa take your character. I'll try to get up a post as soon as possible. I'd do it now, but I just got home from the midnight showing of the Hunger Games, so Im exhausted.

Hmmph.. Any specific roles need filling in this?

I fancy spreading my wings roleplay-wise, and this seems pretty interesting.

You can play as anything you'd like. :)

There are still some nobility positions open, however, now that we have people in each kingdom they aren't a priority anymore. As the OP says, you can be pretty much anything you'd like to be. I suggest your primary characters be some form of either nobility or part of some court, such as a knight, an adviser, or something similar, so that they will have a lot of character interaction. However for secondary characters, if you don't mind posting by yourself a lot, then you could be anything from a fisherman to a soldier on the front lines or even an assassin that's hired by one of the kingdoms.

Just make sure you read over the OP carefully, because we're using an altered timeline from Bethesda's cannon. Pretty much anything Bethesda has said happened after the OB Crisis is nonexistent in this RP and has been replaced with our own lore. If this is successful then I plan on using it as the basis for a new Timeline series similar to the Immortal Blood Timeline.

If anyone joining would fancy a magical role, the exotic court of Evermore is currently lacking a Court Mage. Just an idea. :)

A change of lore is no worries with me, as sadly i know alot less about TES lore than i'd want to. ;)

And then, as if by magic, a court mage was created.
Should have a sheet up by tonight/tomorrow for him, may be alittle rusty as havent done a magic type of character before so you'll have to bare with me ;)

Name: Malduin
Title: Court Mage
Age: 42
Race: Breton
Gender: Male

Appearance: Malduin comes across as quite a willowy fellow, though he shows signs of a once physically fit person. He is often seen wearing expensive-looking garments. He favours his luxuriously green robes when dealing with the affairs of the courts. His has shoulder-length chestnut hair, with a small braid tied from behind his ears linking together. His eyes are a compliment of blue and grey tones.

Skills: Having devoted the majority of his lifes work in both the arts of Illusion and Restoration, he has quite rightly mastered his spellcraft and is widely considered an expert in these fields. He retains a good feel for magick in general, though possesses skills higher than the normal in Conjouration, Destruction, and Alchemy. He's able to understand and unravel the mysteries of most things magicka-related.

Equipment (Weapons, armor, misc.): He only wears robes, having never deemed it a requirement to be in such a place where he’d need any sort of armour. Nor does he carry any generalised weapons apart from his staff. He carries an old oak staff, atop it lays a Soul gem carved in the form of a dragon-fly. The staff belonged to his deceased master, Eldarion, An Altmer who apprenticed Malduin and took him under his wing.

Background: He’s shared little of his stories from his travelling career, though from whats known about him it’s clear he’s put all of his advlt life, and the majority of his adolescent one, into the magick arts. He spent his youth as an apprentice for his towns local wizard, Eldarion, whose staff he now carries as his own. Malduin thought of his old Altmer as a secondary father figure.

After many years travelling together, Eldarion had reached an age where he felt himself unable to continue the life of what he referred to as a “Questing Wizard” and sought after a career serving at a court and dealing with such associated magical issues of that realm. However he disappeared one night, leaving only a note by Malduins room which claimed he’d been called back to his homeland. The writing on this parchment was not the usual quality of handwriting, showing signs of rush and panic. Malduin never found out as to why his old master had vanished, but came across his old staff amongst a passing caravan’s stock.

Having bartered for the staff, Malduin set off to find answers to the mystery of Eldarion, though he never succeeded. As he reached the ripe old age of 40 he too felt it was time for him to cut down on the adventuring and took up position as Court Mage for the kingdom of Evermore.

So tomorrow morning I'm leaving on a two week trip to Ukraine, and I won't have internet access for that time. I'm trying to finish a decent post right now. Anyway, just thought people would want to know why I won't be around for a while.

@asap:
I'll get my coat then :P Shucks man, thanks, glad you liked it. Tbh I kind of phoned it in, not that proud of it. I do like the vision of Castle Evermore though. I could write about it forever. Hopefully with time it'll grow to become more than just one giant Gormenghast homage :P.

@Mhund:
Looks like a cool character. One bit of advice I'd give, is that Evermore is a sizeable Kingdom, one of the most powerful independent states in a region famous for producing the most brilliant mages. For that reason, anyone who rose to the rank of Court-Mage in Evermore would likely be among the most powerful magicians if not in High Rock, then conceivably in all human lands. The Court-Wizard could have gained their position through politicking or for some other reason, but really this is one of those rare circumstances where being OP kinda makes sense.

If King Titus hired this guy, he was likely one of the most (if not the most) brilliant mage in Evermore. Either that, or an auspiciously talented individual with a glowing recommendation from the Synod or the College of Whispers. Just something to think about. Titus, even in his advanced years, was no fool, unless there was some specific reason why he hired your man, it would've been because of a serious good reputation. Titus could afford the very best.

Synod or the College of Whispers.

:slap: No Bethesda cannon past the OB crisis! :stare:

:P

But yeah, the Mages Guild is still the most prestigious arcane institution at the moment. High Rock has its own branch I think. PFA will know more on it since I've pretty much used a lot of his lore for High Rock (Anticlere, Daggerfall, the guilds, how things are set up in society, etc.). The guy is bloody brilliant when it comes to fluff. :P

The Guild of Mages survived the fall of the Empire? Surely once the Bretic states rebelled (or the Imperial Province collapsed into civil war), the central bureaucracy of the Guild - The Arcane University, would have been completely severed? The concept of a continent spanning Guild operating between potentially warring states seems unlikely. At the very least, it is hard to imagine there not being some form of schism between the High Rock and Cyrodiilic branches. There must be some very powerful parties in a nation of mages that would benefit greatly from ousting the Guild, or reshaping it under their rules.

I'm not so much criticising, as curious to see how this works out. Bethesda's solution makes a lot of sense. What form is the Guild in now?

Ahh I probably should have clarified what I meant. In High Rock the guild is still active. Hadn't decided what happened to it in the other provinces though. Also the Empire isn't entirely gone. It just consists of Cyrodiil and Cyrodiil only.

Okay, after a discussion on chat (the fruits of which are on-going and potentially awesome), this is the solution: the Guild of Mages only managed to survive in High Rock due to the intervention of the monarchs of Daggerfall. In the east, Elysana has invited in the shadowy (but immensely powerful) Thaumaturgical Society for the Furthering of The Arcane Arts (or The Society). Originally founded by exiles from the defeated Beautiful faction in the Summerset Isle, The Society is dedicated to pushing forward magical thinking, more of a pooling of resources than a Guild, it contains many Telvanni, refugees from the reformed Cyrodiilic Guild, and Bretons. The Society has been given free reign over Wayrest and more recently Evermore, facilitating the free movement of ideas and research in many fields once frowned upon by the old Imperial Guild of Mages. Expansionist, ruthless and pragmatic, The Society is defined by leaving behind established Arcane dogma, and pushing the limits of magical understanding.

Instead of acting as a representative body of the mage class as the Guild largely did, The Society operates chiefly through its Universities, which accept any Mages ambitious and talented enough. In most of Wayrest and now Evermore, these have created a near monopoly on magic. The old Guild of Mages infrastructure survives in the East of Highrock through various semi-autonomous lodges, mostly officially with some connection to the Society itself. The Society is less of an over-arching bureaucratic body, than a collection of highly ambitious, skilled mages pooling their resources and wealth for the purposes of research. As a result, The Society is the cutting edge in many magical schools, although lacking the stability and infrastructure that makes the western Guild still the premier body of mages for many.

That in mind, it is most likely any Court-Mage for Evermore would have some strong relationship to The Society. It could easily be a negative one - The Society has only really taken grip in Evermore over the last two or so years anyway. He could be one of the best mages outside of it in the east. Or he could be from the Western Guild.

...or it would make the Mages' Guild of Western High Rock the premier body, were it not irreversibly bogged down to a frankly enormous extent in Daggerfall's politics. With the dominant role of the nobility in the realm, the Guild has few places to turn now for backing, especially since the waning of Imperial power (which was hardly strong in the province to begin wtih); it's either the nobles or the kings, and all things considered the main reason why the throne chose to support the Guild and keep it from tearing itself up was because it was already established, familiar and 'tradition'. Bound up in powerplays by nobles of a various calibre due to the prestigious nature of magic in Bretic society and stuffed with corruption, cutthroat politics and scions of ancient houses that can hardly tell an Alteration spell from an Illusion one, the Guild of Daggerfall better prepares a mage for the shadowy politics that lie behind literally nearly everything in the kingdom rather than proper wizardry.

If it wasn't for that big, ginger moustache I could kiss you.

Seriously though, this highlights up the dichotomy between Wayrest and Daggerfall yet again. Elysana is all about ambition, reckless grabs for power that make huge sweeping changes to the very structure of society and piss entire classes off:, but bring immense wealth and opportunity. She is like a slightly less evil Thatcher. Daggerfall, well, PFA puts it well enough. All about overlapping traditions, social structures centuries upon centuries old. Incremental change is the name of the game. I [censored] love the contrasts we are drawing here. This is a cultural war looming as much as a military one. The shape of High Rock to come really is at stake.

Editted my CS alittle, re-wrote the full skills list and made him more powerful in his lesser-crafts. Illusion and Restoration are still going to be his primary fields, but now he'll be a competent character at the understanding of things involving the full field of Magicka.

Trying to make him powerful, without it being OP, is very hard in my books. I usually go under powered if anything.

@Vincent, I'll await your approval for this character before i start making any posts with him. I'm open to critisism as i wouldnt want to make your kingdom look bad after all ;)

At least, in the coming social-political-military confrontation, it'll be easy to pick sides. While some may choose to go for making their realms pretty, fantastical or noble; I, on the other hand, decided to squeeze out as much decadence and unsympatheticness as I could out of this bastard

Coming next post: jokes about eating babies and a codex entry on the Daggerfallian favourite sport of orphan hunting. Also a petition to rename the RP 'Of Naked Princes and Chevalier Power (because I like how that word sounds so you have to live with it constantly being mentioned)'.
