Do printing presses exist on Tamriel?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:19 am

Seriously there are books everywhere, and most of them aren't even very expensive. It seems unlikely that they would have monks copying every book individually by hand like they did in our middle ages.

So do they have printing presses? Do they use some sort of magic to transcribe books? Do conjurers summon up and enslave scamps to make them copy books?

If they aren't explicitly mentioned I believe they're implied in both Tribunal and Oblivion. It would certainly be more difficult for the The Common Tongue and The Black Horse Courier to function if all copies had to be made by hand. I also believe I've seen people refer to printings.

http://www.imperial-library.info/content/common-tongue-author

"We'd like you to find the anonymous writer of 'The Common Tongue' and persuade him to stop printing such lies about King Helseth. When we make official inquiries, people just look stupid and assure us they have no idea what we are talking about. We think you may have better luck -- particularly if you approach less-reputable citizens -- persons who place profit above honor."

I can't remember or find a screenshot of it... but I thought there were printing presses in the secret office for The Common Tongue. Its been a long time though, but the quest does imply they are printing them.

This also seems to indicate that books are printed in editions, although I couldn't find the book on the Imperial Library to actually read it...

They repurposed stock models in creative ways to suggest they were making paper and ink and printing it.

Am I right in remembering that there's a printing press at the top of the tower of Caldera Mages Guild in Morrowind?

And having just dug around on the UESP, there's mention of a book being printed in the main quest line in Daggerfall, which I'd take as fairly concrete proof that printing exists.

Well, there is magic in the world of Nirn. And people called mages use the power of magic. I always assumed it had something to do with that.

You don't need a mage to perform every single mundane task in the world. You don't have to use Alteration to wipe your butt when a good old fashioned corn cob or piece of paper will suffice. Not to be crude but seriously.

Unless you're Telvanni. Then why aren't you?

It's a known fact that the mage lords of the Telvanni do not poop and eat, as their insides are able to recycle waste into a 3 course meal because they are just that magical.

There are certainly printing presses, or something equivalent to them. Printing, and the implications thereof, are referred to multiple times throughout the series; and the existence of newspapers strongly suggests a printing process.
