A prisoner... again?

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:55 pm

The prisoner route is a good method.

It's an and effective way to set up a character with a blank slate of a background that can be worked with. The player can easily fill in the blanks for their own character themselves (as a person could be in jail for many many reasons). It allows for the player to arrive to a new place, without knowing why they are there, but still having a reasonable expectation for there to be a reason.

Guys, please remember that "prisoner" =/= "criminal" or even "jail." Maybe you're a POW from the civil war, or maybe some marauders raided your village and took you captive.

I have a feeling that a Dragon attacks the prison that your being held in and you use that as a diversion to escape.

My warrior was framed for a murder he did not do. And goes out to redeem himself.
OR
My murderer was caught dealing drugs to a Skooma addict, before slaying him. I was then thrown to prison for life before my trial, which could only end in hanging.

Well, assuming Bethesda doesn't create some sort of character backstory themselves... my character will be a Nord with a tendancy to, in fine Nord tradition, get drunk and get into plenty of brawls. In one brawl he just happened to hit someone the wrong way and that person ended up dying.

For comparison, what I have for my favourite characters in previous games (not including Arena and Daggerfall where those were set already):

Spoiler

Morrowind: A Dunmer (born to uncertain parents under a certain sign, you know the Nerevarine drill) who, being far from her people's homeland and without family, falls in with a street gang and thus eventually ends up in prison as a thief and thug.

Oblivion: An aspirant Imperial mage happens to somehow accidentally get caught up in inter-guild politics with a mage-turned-necromancer then still in good standing. How she did it she doesn't know, but when the Emperor suddenly shows up and mentions that the Divines may have set up their meeting, she does begin to wonder...

My guy never knows, I guess... it actually fits in better with my roleplay, the amnesia sidestep.

A certain Outlander found the body of my Nords' husband buried in a shallow grave in the back garden. She had been so careful as well...

As a part of character generation phase, you can select a background story for your character, and/or the reason that you were in the prison, or leave them blank, and those choices would define the starting opportunities that you have in the game, and/or the way that other people initially threat you when you are out of the prison.

And those choices might provide you an initial title, which local people might call you by, until you gain a better title by gaining ranks in factions.

Like, hey "egg poacher", come here.

Out of the initial starting place, you would be initially "Stranger".

Personally, prison's a very good place to start because it gives your character a blank slate where background is concerned. Good characters could have been framed or might have done something minor (or in some cases even something good, if doing right becomes against the law); bad characters have multitudinous reasons for being there and if they're not careful will find themselves there again. :P

It's tradition.
Mine ended up in prison because he was part of a village at war with another one, vastly outnumber he fends off them for a while but later the other tribe over ran him and became a prisoner of war. The tribe who captured him then revolted against the authorities and my character being mistaken for a member of that tribe was sent to prison along with the rest of his tribe.

Did you like?

You'd think AF would die after the first few launches off Dive Rock...

or at least of old age...

or heartbreak over the grand champion dying off...

@ Xeivous
But the Grand Champion would be begging for Death to hurry up. XD

Anywhoo...

Alga Highlander was arrested for the following:

#1- Braining a guy in her tavern into a coma when she tried to stop a brawl.
#2- Cheating on her Nordic husband and porking Imperials in the basemant.
#3- Telling the Dunmers she's glad their homeland got owned by the Argonians and Red Mountain. Well, one of them named Dalen Vreth sued her and won...especially after she punched him in the face during court.
#4- Telling a Pro-Empire person that Martin Septim could svck her !
#5- Telling an Anti-Empire person that Akatosh owns all the Nordic gods.
#6- Telling the Orcs that they're nothing more than savages and that she wished the Nordic gods could smite them from Nirn.
#7- Walking around nvde.

That's it!
