After I have destroyed the Alien spores and entered the doors I am spat out the craft(?) or whatever. I am then on a plateux and don't know which way to proceed?

I have viewed several walkthroughs and they show Alcatras climbing up onto the road but I just receive a gun and seem stranded. What am I doing wrong?
