A problem caused this program to stop interacting with windo

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 7:01 pm

I'm experiencing an odd issue. In addition to the typical 40minute CTD, I've began to get additional crashes every so often. The odd thing is, this type of crash never happens in exterior cells. I always get this type of crash when I'm trying to get out of a dungeon. I havn't experienced this crash while I'm trying to go deeper in a dungeon, it's always when I'm trying to find my way out. These crashes also started after I fixed my files from save game bloating. (using wrye bash)

The display properties utility in Windows, on the "Settings" tab, will tell you the graphics driver you are using, and the Device Manager will tell you the audio processor's name and give you its driver information. I shouldn't have to tell you that your graphics card is very old and very slow, being designed for business use, not for games, so you will be out of luck with any game newer than Oblivion (and will only be able to run it with low resolution and low quality settings, even as old as this old game is), until you upgrade the card.

Since your system may *NOT* be doing anything at all unusual when its old and slow little video card overheats and stops running, your comment about any "typical 40 minute CTD" must be flagged here. You never did finish describing your system, and never included any DxDiag (although I never ask for those, myself).

I'm quite certain it's something wrong with the game itself. Whenever I load a save file that's near the end of a dungeon and try to play from that point, I get a few steps before it freezes and I have to close the program. I can try loading that file 10+ times and it will always crash. But if I load an earlier file near the start of the dungeon, I can get through the dungeon no problem. It's happened more than once and it always seems to be due to loading a save from deep inside a dungeon, (I don't understand why it's like that either) so I believe the problem lies with either my mods (wrye bash and BOSS are used) or my save files. As for the graphics card, I've never had problems with the card, the game runs smoothly at 1200x720 with 20+FPS nearly everywhere.

Gorath being useless as usual...

Unforunately, that Application Hang error isn't going to help us. Unless you debug it on a computer specfic level its simply a generic memory error. This is not saying your RAM is defective (although it could be), its just a error during memory allocation. Most likely the application ran out of usable memory, failed to access a memory address or ran into a application bug (ie infinite loop) and timed out.

I strongly suggest that you post a dxdiag report, because there could be options to tweak Oblivion's memory management / confliguration options to minimize CTDs. 1280x720 isn't that high of resolution (less than one million pixels), so if you are only getting 20+ fps your GPU may be only mid grade at best (depending on your options). For comparison my native resoluton: 1920 x 1200 is over 2.3 million pixels.

I doubt its the GPU overheating as that would cause screen corruption, BSoDs, and/or a system restart... Maybe a VPU recovery error with AMD/ATI chipsets.

***

During a inside to outside transition, your computer will be stressed especially your VRAM and system memory. Older saves may increase the likelihood of transition crashes because of all the saves information it needs to keep track of. Even with utilities to repair Oblivion saves eventually the save files may get corrupted or overloaded.

Again please post a dxdiag so that I can try to get to the root of the issue.

Based on that information plus the PCI IDs its a Radeon 4350 (512MB VRAM, I believe). Take this with a grain of salt: this is a not really a gaming graphics card. Its something you would put in a HTPC. Its better than most integrated cards, but not by a whole lot.

First thing it looks like the drivers aren't loaded correctly as AGP and D3D statuses aren't available. This is puzzling as if this were the case, Oblivion shouldn't load at all. Anyway, try reloading the graphics driver. You may download it here (assuming 32-bit O/S): http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-32.aspx , select the Catalyst Control Suite (59.1MB) this is the only file you need to download.

Download and install the driver and post an update dxdiag report.

***

Now the Radeon 4350 is not going to run Oblivion on high settings on anything. You may be able to get low or medium-low. Minimize shadows and view distance as these with overwhelm the chipset. I cannot verify if your load order is causing any conflicts as I focus on hardware issues.
