Problem showing FPS

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:39 pm

Well this is embarrassing... I can't get my FPS to show in-game. I set ShowFPS to 1 but it's not there =/ I have this little map on the bottom right corner where the FPS is supposed to be, is that normal or a mod? I have no idea at this point >.> But it's really annoying.

You modified your INI

Show FPS=0

to

Show FPS=1

Right?

The "little map" is a normal part of the original game.

If your ini changes aren't being saved, then you're probably on Vista or WIndows7 and you need to run the game as Admin, or just change the install location. Check the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/781497-vistawindows-7-problems/ for more info on those issues.

If you use MGE, it also has a "Show FPS" option, and it is much more accurate than the standard ini one.

Ugh thank you, you must be right. Windows 7 has caused nothing but trouble for me at this point, although I really have to blame my own laziness. I should have tried moving everything a long time ago, I've had issues with admin rights in the past. I've also tried MGE's ShowFPS but that wouldn't show either.

Always set compatibility mode to "Windows XP" and "Run as Administrator" for Morrowind, its launcher and MGE. Otherwise, changes are stored in a virtual folder inside your user's profile. Also note, that when you open your Morrowind.ini with an editor, save it to your desktop and then copy it back to Morrowind's folder, because otherwise changes still are only saved to the virtual folder.

There is a popular registry hack for Vista and 7 called "Take Ownership," that adds an option in the right-click context menu called "take ownership." If you select your morrowind.ini file, right click, select "take ownership," you will then be able to edit the file normally in your text editor. But there is another solution: Fraps. It's free, and will happily display the FPS of any game you run (it actually works for anything that's hardware accelerated, so the new beta of IE9 has a Fraps display for me). It will also take screeshots and video for you (although the free version includes a watermark in the videos). Most of the computer gaming mags use Fraps for official FPS measurements. That way, you don't have to worry about running this or that as administrator (although some older games do require it), or modifying the contents of the ini file. Just a suggestion.

Thanks, I solved this problem by moving Morrowind out of Program Files, but I will try the hack in the future.
