Problem with Ill Met By Moonlight Quest - bug?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:36 am

Would appreciate your kind suggestions here friends. I've begun the Ill Met By Moonlight questline and I'm at the point where I have to locate and kill the White Stag. I spotted the creature and it ran off at high speed, too fast for me to pursue and so I gave up, hoping to resume the quest at a later level in the game. Much gameplay later, I decided to try and locate the pesky animal using the arrow quest indicator and it's pointing directly up a steep clifface slightly SE of Halldir's Cairn. I've scrambled up the incline to the point where my current location arrow is hovering directly over the questline indicator arrow, but there is no sign of the stag anywhere! Now I fear that I'm stuck with this cursed ring of Hircine for the rest of the game! Have I hit a bug, and is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Grazie Mille,

Its still there, just hard to find.

Try detect life at the quest marker, and you are definitely going to need archery or some strong magic to kill it. I prefer archery for the zoom, but good luck.

I ran around with my Companion character with the cursed ring just to inject a sense of urgency in my other quests, I came back a couple of days later and found it drinking from a pond near the marker.

  • It is possible for the Great White Elk to relocate to a position on the map beyond the world limits, making it impossible to finish this quest.
  • This quest tends to become broken If you do not kill the Great White Elk upon your first encounter. It will run away and can end up on a mountain top that is unreachable. Meet up with a few other fellow hunters walking on a path as the elks are found commonly around and use their help to take down the elk.
-wiki.

Doesnt really give you a fix though. Sorry.

Yes, thats exactly what happened, how frustrating. So I guess I'm stuck wearing the cursed ring for the rest of the game. There's no alternative way to remove it?

are you on pc? you could try console commands to force the end of the quest. dont know if it would fix the ring problem though.

Yes, PC. Do you know the console command to use, or where I can find it?

On the PC, it is possible to use the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Console to advance through the quest by entering setstage DA05 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages

so if you want the hide put setstage DA05 100
if you want the ring put setstage DA05 105

save beforehand just in case.

I'm on 360, so I'm not sure this will work...But I removed the ring by manually werewolf'ing out, which de-equips all of your apparel. Then, the ring was in my inventory. Since it had been removed, I just didn't put it back on.

Also, I find that when trying to kill the stag, sprint and/or Whirlwind shout were pretty invaluable, followed by hitting it with a high-damage melee weapon. But if he's already buggered off and gotten lost, that may not prove to be effective advice anymore.
