Problem with Partitioning the Virus

Post » Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:10 am

This one has me a bit stumped. I think it is the Still in the Dark quest... anyway, it would be the Brotherhood of Steel one with partioning the computer virus. I must be doing something wrong. I can never find three virus partions in the time limit. Does it help to up your Science skill? I think my Science skill is around 84 and I'm sure I've got skill magazines in my inventory.. Anyway, this one has me totally frustrated.

Just keep trying, the placement is random so i just kept at it till it hit 3 terminals that were close enough together that I could find them in timeI always wondered why I had to do it alone....there are other Bos in the room..how 'bout we all stand at one? Anyway...I know why, just saying.

Science option makes it so that you don't have to get it all in a single run.

After the guy says 'go' save the game. The terminals will be the same when you reload. Just find each one and remember it the next load.

Not sure if it was fluke but the one time I did it successfully I was checking them clockwise, found the 1st terminal, found the 2nd....then took the amount of terminals between them to find the 3rd.

With a high enough science skill, you can open up a dialogue that will allow you to lock the virus into certain partitions. That way, you don't need to do it in one go.

Well here is the wierd thing. I tried exactly what you are suggesting. I found one terminal, which was in exactly the same place just as you mention. However, after that I couldn't find any other terminals and I tried them all. Seemed like it might be a glitch or something. I thought maybe because I did the save. I'll try again tonight.

I'll also try the "Science option".

don't forget the terminals in the center of the room, on the columns.

I had just finished this, another thing I noticed is that if I opened the terminal before the scribe finished speaking, none of the terminals had the virus and I would have to wait for him to start speaking and finish his sentance before they appeared.

yep, me too. I even made 5 seperate save slots after successfully completing this one just so I would not succumb to a corrupted save and have to do it again.

The only trick that worked was to tell whatever companion I had to wait, then save as soon as he says "Go" and finding the terminals, then reloading and going directly back to the terminals. It took about 10 tries one time, and one time I lucked out and it only took 2 runs.

I thought it was fun to do. Isn't that hard at all. Oh, and if you save before he says go, then reload if you run outta time then the virus is still in the exact places where you found them.

Don't use the science option, it's broken. Makes it so you can't find the virus, unless they patched it in the last patch

Really? Never worked for me before the patch, even when i stabilized the virus 3 times. Stuff is buggy.

I've done this several times and it can get tedious if you're unlucky with it.

I always use the [Science] option, and have found that the best way to go is to wait for the Scribe to say 'Go' and then start looking for the virus. If I find it before the minute is up I partition it and then wait for the time to expire, at which point it jumps. Then I repeat the cycle until I find all 3 parts. Doing it this way it has never taken more than 5 runs to partition all 3 parts, mostly because I take a systematic approach to the actual search.

I always start the first run at the comp to the immediate left as you enter the room and move clockwise from there, ending in the middle. The second run I reverse that. The third I start with the comp to the right of the entrance, then the one to the left of the rear hallway, then the right of the rear hallway. If I need a 5th run I start with one of the 4 in the middle. I only needed to rotate thorugh those once, and at that time I had not yet developed this system for making sure I hadn't missed a comp. I can do each of these runs in 30-40 seconds, although sometimes it takes more like 50 if I get unlucky with virus positioning. The key to saving time is that as soon as the comp starts printing gibberish you close it and move on, since the three with the virus in them have a wisecrack remark instead. Also, you will not find more than one of the three parts per run, so as soon as you find one let the 60 seconds run out and then tell the Scribe you want to try again in order to set up the next run.

Just use quick save and quick load. It is the best Bug free option.

You must be right! I still haven't cracked this one. I've been using the Science option all along. Initially I could find the virus. But now I can't even find one. Maybe the latest patch screwed it up. I'll try one more time without the science option. Otherwise I'll give up. Pretty frustrating to say the least. (I've tried everything suggested except running without the science option.)

I saw this posted somewhere else and it worked. As soon as you find one virus and hit the partition command, just repeat the partition command two more times and the the scribe will announce that you were sucessful. Do this in the same terminal session - don't close it after the first partition command.

I didn't have a big problem. One game I found them in two tries and the second game I did it on the first try. I'd go down one row or one wall. I'm trying to think of what might have been different and it could be Luck. My luck was one point higher the second time...how's your Luck attribute? :)

This part of the mission is broken (for me anyway). My first time through it worked and I could "partition" the virus. I left it and came back to finish it (after the patch perhaps... I'm not sure). No matter what I do the "partition" message doesn't come up on any of the terminals. I've tried many many times. I have even gone back to two different prior saves before this part of the mission and it still won't work. So I'll have to skip this part. :brokencomputer:

I didn't have this problem either, but I did have a related glitch.

1st game, I passed the Science check and it all worked without a hitch.

2nd game, I couldn't pass the Science check, but it still behaved as if I had.

Yup, I'm having issues with this one too. I've found the three terminals and when I hit the "Partition Virus" button and exit out I get the, "Man, we missed it!" dialogue. Tried it three times. 4th time I just killed everyone. Then reloaded to just walk out of the room in disgust.
