Problem with several mods searching for wronginexistant inst

Sorry for troubling again, but unlike what it might sound, it's not actually me (atleast I hope so) that didn't install in the correct folder, but the mod searching for inexistant installation paths of morrowind/folders:

After merging several mods it appears that some of them have a bug making them search for Meshes and Textures in different paths that greatly differ form my installation path... (installed it to c:\Morrowind) but so far three mods keep searching in either in "c:\program files (x86)", "c:\program files" or c:\users\luke\documents\my mods\glass swords retexturing project\ (which I assume is the path used by the original mod maker)

I'm using Windows XP...

didn't realise this bug until entering one of the shop selling new weapons:

And this one directly when starting a new game


I doubt they have been caused by merging multiple .esps in the CS (since Smartmerger gave me quite some bugs and CTD's with several scripts)
or using Merged_Objects and Levelled List...

Doesn't crash the game... but weapons look textureless now

Can someone explain me how to fix these (kinda defies the idea of adding a weapon mod)?

Is only found on 64-bit systems. Out of curiosity, is your XP 32 or 64 bit?

Also, what mod are these weapons from?

First, make sure that the mods have the files neccissary and are pathed correctly. You'll need Nifskope or a similar program to make sure the textures on the sword are pathed to the correct folders. If the location of your Data Files folder is different than what it's pathing to, you'll need to go in and manually modify it to your system. Once that's done, make sure you've installed the mods properly. If both are OK, and the problem persists, try loading the mods without combining them.

Trust me, combining loaded plugins isn't... exactly logical. For instance, when I used it, I actually had to perform bugfixes, in areas where the loaded mods never touched. The mere act of using the command was what caused the bugs!

Marss, didn't Era or someone make a texture path stripper? This shouldn't need to be done by hand. However, if we can find out who made the mod, maybe they can strip out those paths and re-release?

Basically, the texture file paths need to be stripped from the meshes. Smartmerger should be able to do this. That is to say *if* the actual textures are there.

Look in the Data Files\Textures\ folder for the missing textures. If they're there, then the paths in the referenced .nif files need to be stripped out.

Sapphire Weapons and the one weapon from Fallen Weapon Pack both have all the files mentioned...

but the other one mentions additional files not present, but has files containing similar names (only difference is ruby instead of redglass

You could probably change the names of the textures to match what the .nifs are looking for. The one that isn't there was a mistake in packaging, I would guess. In all cases, the modder should be notified so they can fix the package.

From what it says on PES, both haven't logged in for about half a year... should I still try to mail them there?

NIF Texture Stripper seems to work for all except one file: GC_w_claymore_Ruby.nif which even after several times persist to point to the wrong place (dropped both the Meshes Folder and the individual file, but doesn't seem to work)

Is there another way to fix this or am I just doing something wrong?


And send a mail to one of the modders (the other didn't had one specified nor was his site still around)

Well there's http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope, but that could be a little feature-rich for this job.

It's an old tool but Dave Humphrey's NifTexture shuold do what you need. I'm not sure if it'll run on your machine though (I seem to remember I had some issues with it). But it's only an executable so if it doesn't work it's easy to uninstall. Get it from http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Utilities.Detail&id=14.

http://tommyshideout.net/files/srikandi/SkinTut/skintut.htm has a re-texturing tutorial which is more information than is needed here but should help you work out which areas of the program to look in and edit.

You want to change things so that:
c:\users\luke\documents\my mods\glass swords retexturing project\red glass claymores\red glass claymore\gc_tx_w_dagger_redglass_jewel00.bmp

Becomes:
textures\gc_tx_w_dagger_redglass_jewel00.bmp

If NifTexture doesn't work then I think you'll need to download NifSkope, and writing information on that is another post for when it's not as late as it is now...

Yeah, unfortunately NIFTexture Stripper wouldn't help in this case. 99% of what it does, is strips the beginning of the path if it's absolute until it matches 'Textures\something'. Stripping all but the file with no directory structure won't help as it won't know which directory under textures it should be. In this particular case the whole path could be excluded out.

If this type of case is more common I can add an option which will remove/replace/add a path to selected nif files. Might be good for migration work for modders.

It's getting more and more common with new modders and the problems with Windows 64 installation path, Era. A real fix in Smartmerger would be appreciated.

Except it's not SmartMerger this time around (I think anyways) :tongue: Easy to forget since it tends to get the bulk of my attention.

With most of the problem nif textures, are they usually in the root of textures? If so the appropriate fix is rather easy. But likely it will still require explicit flags to remove the absolute path. (Or renamed for pre-settings)

Basically everything in the path prior to Textures needs to be removed. This would preserve the mod's directory structure without assuming Morrowind is in any part of the default path.

Actually that's how it currently works. If we look at the path of the errors, I honestly am getting lost looking at it since I can't tell much of anything from it. Kinda one of those one by one cases.

Had it been this path instead, it would have worked fine.

I know. That's why it didn't modify the Ruby nif or try to fix it. Case by case basis (First one I've heard about).

Perhaps someone will make fixes somewhere to download so we don't have to do it ourselves all the time.

That would simplify things, but organizing and separating vs larger projects and compatibility mods would become an issue (Only so many names you can use). Oh well.

At least it's good to see my program was doing it's job. At first I thought it was a bug, until I looked at the path it referred to. I'll probably still add a new flag in to fix those problems in the next few days or so. (Perhaps tonight)

With Nif Texture Stripper can be possible to generate a log when it have finish his process?
Because I have run the programm over 3000 meshes but no log or error message after it have finish it's work.

Or maybe I have just to use the argument:
--nosave

but how use this in a .bat?
Can you help me ^^.
