My problem with SKSE.

Post » Mon Apr 14, 2014 7:49 am

I finally decided to give SKSE another try, after never been able to get it to work nomatter what version and I STILL get the same problem in Skyrim as I got in Oblivion. The script just doesn't want to run!

I've uploaded a video that shows the problem and as you can see I got lucky and got it to work at one time. Therefore it can't be a problem with any files or it would NEVER work.

There must be some conflict with something but I don't know what the hell it is. Load order don't seem to matter either. I've tried sorting with BOSS and tried to let it load last.

I've tried to run as administrator. That doesn't change anything either.

Your video doesn't show the important bit: how you launch Skyrim. You need to run the skse_loader.exe, and you might need to have the Steam overlay enabled, I can't remember if that's true or not.

I DO launch with "skse_loader.exe". I've set the RCRN Customizer (as you can see I'm using) to point to it, but I've also tried to load it directly by just double-clicking on it.

What's Steam Overlay?

SKSE doesn't sit in the \Data folder, so load order wouldn't have any effect on it; it goes in the main game folder instead (where your TESV,exe file is located). Also, it won't load if you use the normal Skyrim launcher. There might be a command-line switch that I don't know about that could be added to the normal shortcut, but I've typically loaded it using either the included launcher (skse_loader.exe - change the icon; Windows' default icon is butt-ugly) or launched it through NMM as a custom launch. If it's loading properly you'll see the SKSE version at the bottom of the menu when you hit in-game.

(EDIT - ninja'd by wrinklyninja): The Steam Overlay is a feature that lets you access Steam stuff by pressing + while in-game. There is usually a little pop-up in the lower right of your screen that says something to that effect when you start a Steam game. It can be turned off in the Steam settings (it's a check-box in the in-game settings), but I don't think it's necessary for SKSE.

No, it was "SkyUI.esp" and "SkyrimConfigMenu.esp" that I changed load order with to see if that changed anything, if there was a conflict.

OK, check your SKSE installation

  • skse_1_9_32.dll (current 1.7 alpha build - your version might be different) in main Skyrim folder
  • skse_steam_loader.dll in your main Skyrim folder
  • skse_loader.exe in main Skyrim folder
  • \scripts (all of the .pex files) in the \Data folder
  • \scripts\Source (all of the .psc files) in the \Data folder if you've installed the Creation Kit, but not required if you haven't

That's the whole shooting match as far as installation goes. The only other thing to check is whether Steam is running. I don't think the game will launch at all if it's not, even without SKSE, but it has to be running for SKSE to work. All of the little .txt files in the SKSE package don't need to be installed, but most people just copy-paste everything, so they're commonly found in the main Skyrim folder, too.

Checked!

  • skse_1_9_32.dll (using SKSE version v1.6.16)
  • skse_steam_loader.dll (v1.6.16)
  • skse_loader.exe
  • 554 .pex files (which ones do SKSE need and why would the SKSE installer fail to install these in the correct folder?)
  • 73 .psc files

..and yes, Steam is running in the background.

I checked myself by downloading the archive and compare. Looks like all the .pex and .psc files are there. I don't think it's the files that are the problem.
