Problem with sound while using Ubuntu Linux

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:32 pm

I am trying to run Daggerfall using DOSbox on Ubuntu Linux.
I can successfully start the game and the MIDI sound tests work correctly but in both the game and the setup test the Soundblaster test is garbled and halting.
Does anyone know the exact manual settings I can use to set it instead of using Auto Detect or does anyone else have a possible solution?
Thanks.

I use Daggerfall under Ubuntu Lucid. Maybe you are having a problem with SDL - Pulseaudio junkola.

You could try:

sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-alsa

That's what I use, and it sounds ok to me.

Edit: for sound in my dosbox config file, I'm just using the defaults, I think, but I could post them if you want.

The sound card setting should be Ssound Blaster16/AWE32, IRQ 7, DMA 1. These are the defaults in the DOSbox config file and they work quite well. Perhaps your sound is really bad and john's idea will help, but the sound in Daggerfall is recorded at a low bitrate and features lots of noise and hissing.

I tried that but still got the same issue.

I have set those as well with no luck.

The sound is kind of halting with split sections that are sped up almost chipmunk style. The entire audio is also not synced correctly. It is delayed.
After searching online I saw a similar issue that was fixed by lowering the cpu cycles. And though this does seem to help a little, it is messes up about once or twice a second and the sync is still off.

I've only seen that problem on old versions of DOSbox, and then mostly on old computers. Is either one of those the case? If not, we might have to wait for john to reappear. I've only tried Daggerfall on Linux once and it just worked, aside from the game taking forever to load because I was on an ancient computer.

I'm stumped. Easiest thing to do might be to try a different cheapo PCI soundcard, if this is a desktop pc.

What an interesting problem! I have the opposite issue: my SB16 settings work just fine, but I can't for the life of me get my MPU-401 to work :( I'm on Ubuntu 8.04 and DOSbox 0.73
