problems loading savegames

So, its been awhile since I last played Oblivion on the pc, and I'd lent my goty edition copy to my brother, who then lost it. I bought a standard edition (non-goty, just oblivion, no dlc) thinking I could just manually move the data files for the dlcs from a backup of a install I did a few years back, and save a few bucks. I installed it, moved mods and data files to their proper place, started it up, started a new game and went through the tutorial just fine, went to the IC market place to sell some things, and then saved and exited to do some chores. I came back, started it up, tried to load the save, and it got to the loading screen and crashed. After trying everything I could think of, I did a clean install, with fewer mods, and I'm still running into the same problem, but less severe: I cannot load a quicksave, or use the "continue from last save" option at the main menu. I can load standard savegames ok most of the time, but sometimes it will still crash.

I've run oblivion flawlessly on this same machine before, so to my mind, because I'm installing it a slightly different way from a slightly different source, I must be doing something wrong in the install.

Basic Specs:

  • windows 7 32-bit
  • intel core 2 duo
  • 8 gigs of ram
  • nvidia gtx 560 ti

First I install the game from the disc, install obmm and obse, unpack all the bsa's to the data folder, copy/paste mod files into the data folder, run the oblivion patch installer from the bethesda website, use obmm to invalidate the archives using the default setting, defrag my hard drive, run wrye bash, make a bashed patch, and then run the game. after finding I still had issues loading saves, I tried running the shivering isles patcher from the bethesda website, which helped a little.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Did you install the game to the "default" (Program Files (X86)) location? Probably not the best plan, as it leads to issues with the UAC.
