Problems with Arena

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:20 am

I can get it to run. I'm having problems in the game. The music is skipping, the enemies are in the town, tougher than ever. Lizardmen, Crazed Humans, Guards (I think they're guards). How am I supposed to get away from these monsters and fix the music?

As for the music, provided that you are running in DOSBox, try pressing Ctrl-F11 to reduce the number of CPU cycles. Sometimes, setting the cycles too high can actually have the opposite to the desired effect.

The freaks only come out at night. Find an inn and rest until morning. IIRC inns show up as green on your map.

Three options:

1. Find an inn (it's a building with a sign in front that has a picture of a foaming mug of ale) and get a room.
2. Leave the city and hang out by the city gates and rest; if you get a random encounter, go back in the city, pop back out again, and the monster will be gone.
3. Defeat your enemies! And you can incur the wrath of the guards if you mess with other folks' locks, so don't do that, they'll kill you.

I would do No. 3, but they take me down in only a few hits. I guess I could run really fast and try to find that Inn though. Thanks.

If you go to your dosbox.conf file you can set dosbox to automatically make the correct calculations.
core=normalcycles=50000cycleup=500cycledown=20timesynched=trueshowcycles=true

Just find the correct area and paste this over it. I reckon that you won't have the 2 last lines, but just add those as well.

I had framerate issues with Arena until I set "cycles" to "max," which automatically sets the appropriate number of CPU cycles.

If you have framerate issues set renderer to openglnb with that I'm able to play in fullscreen. Even games like Future shock runs with minimal lagging in fullscreen which lags really bad with default.

I don't know if this still applies, but with an older version of Dosbox I found that increasing the frameskip (ctrl+F8) made the sound smoother at high cycles.

Only if you're around other people ;) I'm the king at getting into people's homes and taking all their nice stuff.

What you do is, find a house thats surrounded by hedges and make sure nobody is around in them, and start hacking at the door with your weapons, it can take from 1 hit to like 10 seconds of hits but eventually you'll get inside. If you break into a house with two floors and theres a pile of treasure on the bottom floor, you can take the treasure and go upstairs, and then go back downstairs and there will be another treasure pile (in the same location) but with different treasure. This trick can be done an endless amount of times and you'll get all sorts of nice items there and make tons of money.

Not true; you don't have to be "seen" to incur the wrath of the guards. They Know All and See All.

A hedge is the key, but not for the reason you surmise. They're key because the guards that spawn are likely to spawn on the other side of the hedge, and the game's chase algorithm isn't smart enough to make them find a way around the hedge.
