Problems With Better Music System

I recently installed Better Music System v2.3, after rolling back from 2.42b because it caused a CTD every time I tried to play. The problem now is that it simply doesn't work. I've distributed my music into the various folders, adjusted the ini, and activated the esm, but I'm getting none of the functions that BMS is supposed to add. I've also installed both required OBSE plugins. Have I missed something, or forgotten to install something?

I just suffered it not working, but in my case it was the two plugins not being installed. You can try and test which part isn't working. If the plugins are installed without the mod you should still different battle music behaviour as explained in the EMC readme. If the mod is installed but the plugins aren't working you should at least get the spell to change the music. If either of those is true, we can tell which part is broken.

BMS works just fine with my setup, and I didn't do anything other than follow the instructions at the site and in the readme. Also, the ini itself, I suppose.

Sorry if this is a dumb (haha) question, but did you remove the dummy files from the directories in which you placed new material?

To sum up, did you do all this, in the right order (this is from the readme html file that came with the mod:

0. be sure the plugins listed under 'requirements' are installed and work! (yes, that means you have to start the game and test it. before you go on!)

1. copy the content of the zip file to your DATA folder. nothing will be overwritten, except older versions of this mod.

2. fill the custom folders with your .mp3-files and delete the dummy.mp3. (only delete the dummy file in that folders!)

3. copy silence.mp3 from "Empty" folder to a playlist folder to get silence for that specific playlist.

0. don't delete any folders in your oblivion music folder! again: don't delete any folders in your oblivion music folder!

1. if you alter the ini, be sure to know what you're doing! it's not to hard, but you have to read all text carefully!

2. enable the BetterMusicSystem.esm, (disable the old esp if you are upgrading!)

Well, /facepalm I thought I did, but I just re-read it and saw that I was supposed to DELETE the dummy.mp3 files, not leave them be. Thanks for pointing out the glaringly obvious, it's usually those bits that I miss...

I'll try that when I get home, and see if all works properly.

One thing is still bugging me about this mod and the readme doesn't clarify it. The Power of Music spell seems to work for the cell where I'm standing at the moment (eg. an NPC's hosue), but doesn't persist if I move to another cell, even if it's owned by the same NPC. If the spell applies to all cells owned by that NPC shouldn't it at least persist for the duration of my game?

Mine seems to suddenly have stopped working. Well, it works.. I guess, but plays the Heartlands region music EVERYWHERE... and on my other save it plays the Public music EVERYWHERE. I just don't get it.

BMS gets broken for me after a long time of play. Fix is simple: remove BMS from your load oredr (that is, just uncheck it in WB/OBMM), load your save and save again, put BMS back in and load, it should work again. I don't include BMS in the Bashed Patch just to make this fix easy and painless to apply.

Frankly, BMS has never worked for me (I always get crashes when battle starts even with v 2.3, but the rest locational music worked fine). As it works for most others, I am sure I am doing something wrong. But after a day's hammering, if I can't figure it out, then I just gave up and used Immersive Combat Music instead.

The others (the two very small text files) only apply at all if you happen to install the optional extras with the names of the repsective text files in question (not included in that archive, but instead separately downloadable). And even then, those text files don't tell you very much (i.e., nothing even close to the whole story).

BMS works just fine, if you actually follow the instructions and - if necessary - customise the ini... as is the case with most mods.

Lots of people have problems with BMS, even those that have followed the instructions to the dot such as myself and the OP. I believe, as well as the creator of the mod, that many of these problems are related to the buggy plug-in required, EMC. BMS itself works just fine, you are right.

Anyways, EMC seems to bug out in certain situations and I am not sure why. Right now, everything is working fine except for I believe EMC. Region playlists are playing fine. Battle music however, is playing as soon as combat is entered just like in vanilla as opposed to delaying until you actually attack or get attacked. I'm not sure how to fix this... I am going to try deactivating BMS.esm and clean-saving but often this does not seem to work for me.

That's an interesting anecdotal; here's another:

I'm currently using BMS, Fraps, and a codec pack, without any issues at all. That's after logging many hours of play, with hundreds of other mods, what's more.

Not to say I don't believe you (I do) but, well, there are many ways of going about things, including selecting (and, in some cases, correctly setting up) codec packs. Also, I have no idea what you mean re: "Fraps' codec" - what exactly is that?

Well, according to GSpot it's a video decompressor... go figure why it disturbes my BMS... it's called : vidc.fps1. Anyway, I don't get much codecs but I know that Fraps conflicts with BMS on MY machine. I guess I am one of the unlucky :( . I wish it would work fine, maybe after a clean reformatting of Windows... but that's another story way ahead in the future. I was just telling my anecdote so others who have the same problem know about that possibility.

Oh, wow, it's been a long time since I looked at this thread. Anyways, if it helps anyone, BMS seems to only work for me on new games. The problem I was having was apparently only affecting my pre-existing saves. I don't remember that being noted in the readme, but hey. As proven before, I am prone to miss little things like that. >_>
