Problems with Daggerfall (Bugs, not installation)

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:56 am

I recently acquired a copy of Daggerfall and while I've been enjoying it, there have been a few problems. Namely:

-Monsters usually don't move very much, if at all. Some creatures, such as rats and spiders, seem to be completely stationary and don't move at all. Instead, when I'm near them, they twitch and jerk around a lot while remaining in one spot the whole time. They make no effort to pursue me or even take a few steps in my direction in order to engage me. Occasionally I'll find a thief, werewolf, or mage that will take a few steps towards me, but that's rare.

-When I go to the Mages Guild in Daggerfall and attempt to buy spells, the game inevitably crashes the very second I scroll down to a certain spell (I think slowfall). This means that I have to quickly bring the scroll bar down in order to see all of the spells that come after that particular spell and avoid crashing my game. This happens no matter who I choose to buy spells from, by the way.

-Maybe this isn't a bug, but my character moves very slowly. Walking across towns and cities is an agonizingly long process, and when I hold down the run key I don't seem to actually notice any increase in speed. The reason I think this may be a bug is that I've seen some youtube videos of this guy named boilerplate playing the game and his character runs very fast. I suppose it may be because his character is high-level and thus would have a higher running skill, but still, even with my skill as low as it is, I wouldn't think my character would be *this* slow. Nobody moves this slowly unless they're morbidly obese yet clearly if you look at my character's paper doll he is a handsome young Breton in peak physical condition.

-This is really important: MY CHARACTER CAN NOT SWIM. That's right, swimming is completely broken for me. I jump into a body of water and I get stuck in place. I can't move around, I can't dive under water, and I can't even get back out of the water. My character can't move at all in the water and I am forced to load a previous saved game.

-I'm on a quest for the court of Daggerfall to get these letters from Castle Necromoghan, but the letters are nowhere to be found! I've exhaustively searched the entire dungeon except for the parts that are underwater, and I used cheatmode to teleport myself to all of the places where the quest item might be just to be sure that I didn't overlook it, but it's in none of the locations where it should be. It's like it just isn't in this dungeon at all. Is there anything that I can do to fix this?

-It's too late to do anything about this, but I did a Mages Guild quest where you're supposed to protect this sorcerer in a trance from assassins, only the assassins never really showed up. I was supposed to guard the guy for three hours, so I decided to loiter for three hours. My loitering is interrupted with the message that there are enemies nearby, so I search the entire Mages Guild but I never find any assassins. Whenever I tried to rest, I kept getting the message "enemies are nearby" but I never found any enemies. Eventually I was able to rest and just completed the quest without a fight. What the heck happened?

-I joined the Temple of Julianos early in the game and had a quest concerning some false prophet or whatever and at one point I receive two letters, one telling me to go back to Privateer's Hold and find somebody or their body inside and another telling me that something terrible has happened to one of my contacts at this tavern. I search the entire dungeon and I don't find anybody or their body, and when I go to the tavern to talk to the lady I'm supposed to talk to, I can't initiate dialogue with her. She's there, but when I hit the space bar nothing happens. As a result, I was unable to finish this quest and was expelled from the Temple of Julianos. I'm way past this experience now, but seriously, what was up with that?

Things you should know:

-The game is fully patched
-I am running it with VDMSound

Use DOSBox instead. A number of issues that you mentioned, are because the CPU is too fast for the game.

The invisible quest bug is a known problem as well from running Daggerfall in NT/2K/XP/Vista. DOSBox will fix this too, although this particulary mages guild quest will continue to be bugged if you run the save in DOSBox, cause the save is now bugged as well. But all the quests you get while running in DOSBox should work fine.

Also, Daggerfall is a very buggy game :P

Since I installed the game with VDMSound, how do I run it with DOSBox now? Before using VDMSound I initially tried to install the game with DOSBox but I couldn't because when I got to the point where you choose installation size no matter which option I chose it always said that I didn't have enough space to install the game (despite having about 170 GB on this partition). Whenever I drag the Dagger.bat and Dagger.exe files to DOSBox, it tells me that it is unable to locate the Daggerfall cd, although it is in my drive. When I try to run fall.exe in DOSBox, it tells me to run Daggerfall.exe. What do I do?

The easiest way would be to do a complete fresh install with DosBox and the Daggerfall CD. Freddo's sticky explains how to Install and get Daggerfall running with DosBox.

But what about my current save games? Should I just copy the save folders in C:/Dagger and put them back in once I've installed it with DOSBox? Would that work? And when I tried to install Daggerfall with DOSBox I did, in fact, attempt to follow Freddo's sticky, but I got stuck at the point where it says to choose the huge installation size. It turns out that none of the installation sizes work. It tells me that I don't have enough space, although there are 170 GB on this partition. If I can't fix this problem, there's no way I can install it using DOSBox.

"You do not have enough disk space for your chosen installation type. The files take more room than this install program first anticipated. Go back and try a smaller type. If you do not have enough disk space for even the minimum installation type, you will have to delete some files on your hard disk to make room."

That's what I get when I choose the huge installation type as Freddo's sticky instructs me to do. I've tried it again recently and this time the minimum installation type actually works, but now that it's installed I still can't play the game. At the end of the installation it says to type:
CD C:/dagger
DAGGER

to run the game, but it just tells me that I have the wrong cd or it can't find the Daggerfall cd or something like that. I go on with Freddo's guide and type:

CD ARENA2
D:
CD DAGGER
CD ARENA2

into DOSBox but nothing happens. It says "You are still on drive Z:, change to a mounted drive with C:.

So I type in MOUNT C GAMES -freesize 500 again since that's really the only thing I can think of (I have no clue what I am really doing).

It says "Drive C is mounted as local directory GAMES/

If I type CD ARENA2 at this point it says again "You are still on drive Z."

If, instead, at this point I type MOUNT D F:/ -t cdrom I get "MSCDEX: Mounted subdirectory: Limited support. Drive D is mounted as CDROM F: /\."

Whatever that means.

I type in CDARENA2 at this point and again "You are still on drive Z."

Type in D: and then CD ARENA2 and it says "Unable to change to: ARENA2.

God, what am I even doing? What do I need to do to install this game with the huge installation size and actually run it properly?

Don't continue with the guide if you get an error. Instead try to troubleshoot what was done wrong. In this case it seems like you didn't use the MOUNT command correctly (if that's the case you need to restart DOSBox), or that you didn't make a GAMES folder to install the games in as the first post in the sticky said.

If you gonna follow the sticky, please take some time and read the first post and the Daggerfall post, and follow them precisely. There's no need to rush.

As for the save games, you could easily just copy the old save folders from the old Daggerfall install to the new Daggerfall install (when it's done).

Try upping the amount on the freesize command to 800 or so. 500 is cutting it a bit tight. Then you should be able to install properly and carry on with Freddo's instructions from there.

It's working perfectly now. Upping the freesize allowed me to do the huge installation. After that, it was easy. I can swim and jump and run now. Thanks for the help.

Quite strange that that would be the problems since the huge installation is 444MB and the freesize 500 give the mounted C 524MB.

But I'm glad you got it working :)

I wasn't able to use 500, either, back when I installed it.
