Problems with DDS Converter 2.1

Post » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:58 pm

I'm having a big problem with this utility. It just freezes and won't do anything a couple seconds after opening it. I can maybe click on one folder before it freezes up completely. This utility is utterly useless to me under the circumstances. I'm running it on XP and have never had this problem before. I even turned off my anti-virus just in case it was interfering with it, but it's still not working.

Does anyone know why it's doing this and how I can fix it?

I don't use this utility but my preferred method of changing files into .dds format is just with GIMP and the dds addon.

I normally use the photoshop dds plugin when I create my own files, but I have a huge amount of icons from another mod that I want to batch convert. I really need this stupid utility to work like it's suppose to.

http://www.irfanview.net/ does batch conversions to .dds (with a plugin). I've used it for years. :)

i use the nvidia dds utilities once you get the command line bit figured out it's easy to convert hundreds of files. i have used it with infra view to dumb down a bunch of high res replacers for my weak pc

So where do I find the dds plugin for this tool? I've tried downloading everything from the plugins section, but there's nothing there to write dds files. I can't figure out what to download direct from Nvidia either.

Edit: I've installed the Nvidia dds utilities. Now what do I do with it?

it's a bit complicated if you want to do a bunch of files you have to do it from command line i think it's the Nvdxt and it will bring up a dos window the manual that comes with it can walk you through it it's a bit tedious

Yeah, I'm not up for that. That sounds like it's more complicated than opening them up all individually in photoshop and saving them, and the documentation isn't very clear to me. Arrgh! Why can't DDS Converter just work!? It was so easy to use...back when I had it actually working. :brokencomputer:

Where is this mysterious dds plugin for Irfranview? I have searched all over for it, and all I can find are tons of forums with people saying that it can't be done. :banghead:

This may just be too easy but have you tried running it as administrator?

There's no option for that in XP, and the program was originally written for XP. I have no clue why it's suddenly broken for no reason. It used to work fine on this exact same system. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it multiple times since it stopped working.

I can't seem to find the .dds plugin for irfanview either. I just got this pc when my old one died so I had to DL the new version and I assumed it would have the .dds converter plug-in like the older versions did. Now I can't even find the older versions of Irfanview. Sorry for the bad info. :) I'll look around more and maybe I'll get lucky. :)

Here is a http://www.tucows.com/preview/415586 where the plugins file can be downloaded.

Just download and install to your irfanview folder. Open irfanview and look under file> batch to get to where you can batch convert dds to whatever.

EDIT:
Oops, it seems I was mistaken. The Irfanview plugin will convert from dds but not to dds. Sorry about that...

as for why DDS converter might not be working - what is your operating system? Vista and/or Windows 7 might have that Administrator nonsense and hiding folders and not giving access. You might have to change some settings there, I don't know. Works fine on Windows XP 32 and 64 bit.

I've already downloaded that though. There's no DDS converter there. You can convert from dds but not to dds.

And I've mentioned already in the OP, I am running XP. DDS Converter 2 just stopped working, and now it won't work no matter if I uninstall it and reinstall it again. It's definitely not working fine in Windows XP 32 bit, at least not on my machine.

Sorry about the bad lead there, but I have another alternative... perhaps. There is another app similar to irfanview called XnView which claims to do batch conversions and reads and writes dds, among many others. I'm not too familiar with this software, so take it for what it's worth.

http://developer.amd.com/gpu/compressonator/Pages/default.aspx supposedly does batch converting, I've never used it though

*edit* I just installed and played around with it, and the interface is not too hard to get around in. Took about 3 minutes to run it on 50 random tga files (512x512, some with alpha), and had one out of the 50 get screwed up. It's not perfect, but I'd say give this one a try.

Oops, sorry, I should have read the OP closer.

I had it installed on my laptop (32-bit) and never had problems. Hmm. Have you tried uninstalling with http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html (http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?showtopic=983941&st=0&p=14225246)? Could be a registry booger that DDS 2.1 left on your system that is messing things up. Select the most advanced uninstallation option on Revo, and remove all registry items and extra files from DDS converter - well, assuming it leaves things in the registry, I don't know for certain.

I've installed DDS Converter 2.1 for the first time, and I have the same problems as Stuporstar.
It just doesn't work for me at all.

I've decided not to do what I was going to use it for, so I don't need it now, anyway.

(For the record, I'm using Vista, but I have all of my system and administrator settings set properly, so that isn't a problem.)

Maybe this one works, give it a try.

PS. I used DDS Converter 2.1 in a crysis mod I have, when I launced the city assault mod everything was covered with terrible aliasing. No wonder the mod consists from tga files. I batch converted them to dds files with mipmaps. Problem solved.

Their converter sounds good, but it wouldn't help with what I needed.
It converts PNG, JPG and BMP. I needed TrueVision Targa. (TGA)

I think it can be a directx issue:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/

or maybe .NET:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_dotnet_framework_4/

Also you can batch convert them to bmp or png first and then convert to dds. It will be longer but quality will be the same. Better than nothing.
