Problems with mountains

Post » Sat May 08, 2010 11:50 am

One thing that is unavoidable is the fact that there are a lot of mountains in skyrim. From previous experience in oblivion and fallout, well the mountains and hills werent very good. i remember trying to climb up dive rock by endlessly running against the sheer cliff edge until something happened. Even worse in fallout NV where there are invisible wall on every crevice, ant hill and slight inline. Do you rekon they should do something about this? , all i can think of is some kind of crude climbing ability.

I think they need to create awesome looking mountains and add a climbing skill.

they should add mountain passes of course, also a climbing skill wouldn't actually be too bad I think

I want mountains that look like mountains... not just very steep hills.

If they don't make mountains too easy to climb, they can use them to make the map seems bigger, like they did in Morrowind.

Is it to much to ask for the mountains to look like the begining of the mission "cliffhanger" in Modern Warfare 2.

yeah they are gonna have to vastly change the projection, textures, and shape of how mountains are done. (when compared to FO or TES4)

Actually, Fallout 3 did moutains pretty good. Just check them on the northwest part of the map, they are very rocky and realistic.

It's... better, but it still just looks like some boulders ontop of eachother, I'd really like something like the Modern warfare thing. I realize that area was made for a one path scenario, but still, the size and build was really awesome

Ultimately as long as Bethesda keeps doing their silly heightmap terrain, they're just going to keep embedding boulders into steep hillsides and calling them "mountains". Something along the lines of voxel terrain would be amazing, but I don't see it happening.

Even if they still use the heightmap approach though, I do hope we'll be seeing some interesting cave and mountain meshes.

better, but far from optimal. also forget about looks, their accessibility was still trash.

Or they could hire consultants such as professional climbers, scientists for the terrain, etc.

The climbing skill is such a must for a game like Skyrim. I can't believe they removed it from Morrowind with all those pesky hills everywhere across the landscape, it never made sense to me to remove the climbing skill. In Oblivion there wasn't a lot to climb apart from buildings (which should have been more climbable), but it really is inexcusable if they don't include a climbing skill in Skyrim. It would be like making the game without any Nords.

Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8Re377ol0g Someone posted that in another thread, about trees I think, I was quite impressed by the landscape. Reminds me of backpacking trips in the Rockies. Except for, you know, the ocean at the bottom.

It takes a lot of strength and agility to climb very high mountains. I still haven't been able to climb to the top of Denali (McKinley). :P

Hopefully, in the 5 years since Oblivion came out, they sent programmers out to see what actual mountains and ridges/cliffs look like.

Equip climbing equipment and climbing starts automatically when you get close to a cliff, tree, or house wall. You won't be able to fight or cast spells while climbing.

Big, steep, realistic mountains that you can climb with nice animations both in 1st person and 3rd person. I want to ... like really see my hands reach, grab, and hold on to an edge of the mountain rocks (in 1st person) :)
