Productive Feedback on the API Limitations

Post » Fri Mar 07, 2014 10:44 am

So I started this thread on the Psijic Forums, but I think its important to open up the question for a wider audience (also I'm curious how different the results will be here compared to the Psijic testers). Also, the other thread on this topic is now at post limit on these forums.

Here's my original post and I'm excited to see what you guys think.

NOTE:

The second question doesn't appear on the PTS thread.

NOTE:

I know that my poll is awesomely comprehensive ( ) but please leave a comment in support of your position anyway.

Add-ons are fine , as long as the game stays fun and it doesn't show anything about other players. Nobody wants a situation where people are forcing you to have a certain gearscore/ilvl or that one addon to optimise your healing so that you just gave to keep clicking the same buttons.

Buff / Debuff tracker on target is a bit middle ground i think. I consider Buff to be a no go but Debuff could still be display on target.

Wow, talk about a biased poll. You need an additional choice on the bottom part: "None of the above". Also, your wording on the choice to leave the API as is could stand to be re-worded to something less biased, like: "API is fine as is"

Your 'awesome' poll won't let you post a vote unless you vote for a restriction in the second part so you need to add a 'all the above are fine with me' option.

This is a very good poll compared to some others. The options are much more specific (though a "none of the above" option should be added at the bottom if people can't vote without choosing one).

I think it's fine if add-ons display personal information about your character.

That means:

No enemy resource pools other than health

No cast bars

No DPS meters for other players

No pop-ups tell you that an opponent's resources are low

I also checked the "no buff/debuff trackers on your opponent" option, but I have a side-note to add for this one. I think it would be acceptable to show any debuffs that you have applied to your target so you can keep track of DoTs, CC and stuff like that. The main reason why I checked this option is because I think it should NOT be possible to see what buffs someone has active. Some normally invisible buffs (such as single charge projectile reflection, i.e. defensive posture) can provide a significant tactical advantage over your opponents, and it's not fair that add-ons do make these visible.

You need to put NOT in bold letters so people aren't thinking the poll is to have those things in and also an option at the bottom for people that want all of those options in an addon otherwise the second poll could be skewed.

I'm a bit more interested in other types of add-ons with immersive features, for example, something that reproduces the Eidetic Memory skill, allowing players to retain a library with all the books they find, more immersive quest journal including completed quests, player notes, improved mail messaging menu, removal of floating quest markers, etc.

Thanks for the feedback, even if it was incredibly snarky/rude in its presentation. I've changed to poll to allow a "none of the above" for the second option.

Pretty sure capital letters can do it just fine.

Oh i want this. There are lots of books not in the lore library which I might want to read later.

Someone has actually already made a mod like that. Not sure if it has all those features, but it has some. Its called "Wykkd's Full Immersion" or something.

But this poll is in response to ZOS's comments which were about addons that can confer a competitive advantage, so I tried to focus on those.

I'm also curious what the outcome of the poll on the PTS forums was. Is that information classified?

Nope. We've been told that we can freely talk about it. Both polls are ongoign though so it might be a bit too early to compare.

Right now the PTS is:

11%

0%

50%

33%

5%

0%

Stop it. Allow developers to decide.

Um...should we quite giving them feedback that they've specifically enlisted us to give?

I'll send a message to ZOS right now. "Sorry guys, I can't Beta test for you anymore. Raged thinks you guys should make these decisions on your own."

So long as the API info isn't triggering automated actions then I'm fine. I don't believe in the messy and confusing reality of PvP and the complexity of character build options this kind of information makes any difference. What will make the difference is all the combat combo macro's really competitive people will have programmed into their gaming keyboards.

Not that I care about that either.

If people are having enough fun with this sort of stuff for them to sub each month then good luck to them.

Posting a poll on the forum probably doesn't strictly count as beta testing.

Just as an informational note, to be clear, the API could never perform actions for you.

The mods have always only been able to DISPLAY information and not input information (which would be required for anything automated.) People who were complaining that they didn't want to see "Auto-Dodge" addons were just factually misinformed.

Well on the Beta forum it certainly does.

As for here?

ZOS has made it clear repeatedly that they read these and other forums because they're interested in getting feedback about the game from a wide variety of sources.

I know. But third party programs can take the input and do it in other games i'm told. Otherwise like I said - I'm cool with whatever ZMO decide and if it means that should I be stupid enough to be caught in a fair PvP fight I might, all other things being equal, be at a slight disadvantage then I'm okay with that also.

You made the same mistake in this poll as the other.

"Only an API in its current form with no additional restrictions is acceptable to me." - This isn't accurate.

"Addons should be able to give full information about one's own character and some information about other player's, but with certain restrictions on the latter." - This is actually closer to how it currently is in the game. The API is already restricted.

Appears accurate to me. It's regarding the current, selectively restricted, API and that no additional restrictions are needed.

I voted for limited information on opponents, but the only information I support being shown on opponents are debuffs.

Pang, I think you missed an important word.

"Additional" restrictions.

In other words, the final option means you want things to stay as is. The one above it means you think there are more needed restrictions on what you can see about another person's character. The entire conversation, started by ZOS, is about API restrictions specifically. So I think the framing is quite appropriate.

Just stuff about my chars, self dps, my own combat logs and info that generally helps me improve.

Oh, and the game is in desperate need of a minimap addon :D
