Project Predator

Prologue:
I woke up, unable to sleep; then again it was tough to sleep in Power Armor and even tougher to sleep on a rough, bloody mattress. I stood up stretching out my limbs, hearing the hydraulic joints creak from damage they had sustained in battle yesterday. I had been trying to liberate some captives from Super Mutants at the Germantown Police Headquarters and I thought my Power Armor would be able to withstand their firepower.

That was my first mistake.

I had brought a Laser Rifle and a Trench knife with me thinking with my incredible skills how can I lose?

That was my second mistake.

After I had got within their range they had opened up with everything they had. Miniguns. Rocket Launchers. Chinese Assault Rifles. At first my Laser Rifle seemed to be just a light show to them but, once two disintegrated into ash piles, the Super Mutants they concentrated their efforts and more and more bullets penetrated my Power Armor, causing agony. Hurriedly I injected stimpacks into the port on the side of my armor.

Oh and only bringing five stimpacks?
That was my last mistake.

So I wimped out and ran as fast as I could towards a power station that I knew was safe.

And here I am.
Standing In the dark but, then I hear something.
I peer out of a nearby window.

An Enclave Vertibird!?
Power Armored soldiers come pouring out, charging at the door. I ran over to the door trying to hold it but it's no use my frail frame can't support the door. The door comes crashing down on top of me. But instead of turning me to a green pile of goo as I expected, one of them holds up this weird weapon to my face and fires. It shoots these wavy beams at me but nothing happens.

"I think the Mesmatron is broken sir," One of them commented

"It's okay;" said another one "The old fashioned way works just as well."
Then a Power Fist closes in on my face and I am plunged into darkness.

Chapter 1
Conversion
I woke up strapped to a chair with a piercing light blinding me. Then after a moment the lights shut off and a man walked forward and introduced himself.
"Hello, I'm Colonel Augustus Autumn and you are?"

"Umm Caleb?" I said uncertainly.

"Well as you may have noticed we took care of your wounds and all of your possessions are in this locker here and have been repaired to a pristine condition."

"Can I ask why?"

"Well we have a mutually beneficial proposition for you."

"Do tell."

"Well? to be blunt we need you to kill the kid from Vault 101"

"You seem to have the people and the tech why not do it yourself?"

"Ugh we tried that, nothing we've tried works, Entire Teams of Tesla Armored troops fail, traps get disarmed, and assassins can't seem to get him no matter how high we place the bounty."

"And somehow you expect that I will be able to? I can barely run my own life!"

"We are ready to perform many operations to change your body and mind to become a predator if you will, of this?.this?monster."

"If I do this what do I get out of it?"

"Weapons, Armor, Tech, name it and it is yours. Now are you in or out?"

I thought deeply about this. On one hand I could return to my old life back complete with gear in top condition and go back to saving the lives of innocents. But on the other hand I could have money, power, and the best tech in the world for one little killing.

"I'm in."

Looks interesting. As I say every time I see a story in fpp, I'm not really a fan. However, that's just my personal opinion.

Chapter 2
Rebirth
I woke up feeling sore in every part of my body. I tried to sit up but a doctor quickly pushed me back down.

"Woh there big guy you've been through quite the ordeal,"

"What did you do to me?" I groaned

"Would you like to hear the list?"

"All right I'll bite, give me the list."

"Well," he said adjusting his glasses "We put thin sheets of metal beneath your skin, and then we toughened up your skin, gave you an adamantium skeleton, gave you a faster metabolism, rewired your reflexes, increased your resistance to radiation, and to top it all we made you solar powered!" he exclaimed.
By the end of his little speech I was feeling much better so I decided to get up and examine myself in a nearby mirror.
I was completely changed! My face had been altered but, I could live with it, my body meanwhile was that of an Olympic athlete, and I noticed my body was rippling with muscles.
"How come you didn't tell me all these changes?"

The doctor chuckled "It was something I wanted you to see for yourself."

"Anything else I should be aware of?"

"We gave you some subliminal training in most practical arts such as the use of small arms, explosives, and hand to hand combat."

"So what do I do now?

"Go to the armory and outfit yourself with anything you would like."

I started for the door but the doctor tapped my shoulder and I turned around.
He was holding some sort of hand-held computer
"Here have this Pip-Boy I think you'll need it."

"Thanks," I put it on my arm and closed it and I heard lots of locking noises and on the screen it read [Biometric seals activated]

"Good luck" he said as he gave me a thumbs up.

"I'll need it" I said under my breath.

Chapter 3
Starting the Hunt
Walking out of the surgical ward I found myself in a hive buzzing with activity. Enclave soldiers patrolled while scientists in clean suits examined some mole rats suspended in an emerald liquid. As I looked around I began to lose hope that I could find the Armory. But then I spotted a sign reading "Armory".

I immediately made for it ignoring all the suspicious glances I got from the Enclave sentries. After I took a step inside I stopped, awestruck. The Enclave had racks of weapons arranged in neat rows, Suits of armor polished to a proud shine, and magnificent stockpiles of munitions. Excited, I rushed over to a weapon rack, and pulled out a rifle with a bright green tip.

"Ah an Energy weapons buff?" Questioned a nearby soldier

"Yeah?Kind of?I Guess." I stammered trying to find the right answer.

The soldier chuckled "It's okay, it's not an interrogation, my name's Carl," He held out a hand.

"Caleb," I said shaking.

"Looks like we'll be working together"

I frowned "What!? The Colonel didn't say I'd have a partner"

"That [censored]! That's just like him to leave out details."

"It's okay, good to know I got someone to watch my back"

"Yeah???." He trailed off.

"So were your parents in the Enclave?" I said eager to keep him talking

"Sort of, my Father was but my mother wasn't," he deadpanned

"Oh, what happened to them?

"My Dad murdered my mother on orders, then, later he was KIA,"

"Oh, I'm sorry,"

"It's ?.okay; I'll wait for you outside all right?"

"Yeah, I'm almost done in here"

He walked off toward the door and I decided to hurry up to gather my gear. I quickly put on one of their suits of Power Armor, and grabbed two handfuls of microfusion cells for my new rifle and stuffed them in a small sack. Once I got through the doorway Carl immediately stepped forward.

"Our Vertibird's leaving in two minutes lets hurry up"

I nodded and we started jogging through the base trying to find a way to the helipads. With only 30 seconds till lift off we made it. A soldier already aboard gave me a hand up, I turned around to help Carl but he was 20ft away talking with Col. Autumn! Due to the Vertibird's rotors I couldn't hear a word of what they said but I saw Carl throw a fit over something then, the Col. Turned around, letting Carl join us aboard. He sat in the seat next to me.

"What was that all about?" I asked.

"Just clarified some things with the Colonel," He quipped. Reaching under his seat he pulled out an Enclave helmet and he put it on, I reached under my seat and quickly donned my own.

"Why are we wearing these?" I wondered.

Carl shrugged. "Standard operating procedure,"

The Vertibird's rotors picked up more speed and then we lifted off, quickly gaining altitude. After a few minutes of peaceful flight, turbulence started to shake us in our seats.

"What's happening?" I yelled

"Damn Muties took out one of our rotors??we're goin' down!" the pilot screamed.

I looked out the window and the ground rose up to meet us awfully fast. Carl stood up and opened an emergency hatch.

"What are you doing?" I demanded.

"Standard operating procedure!" He yelled

Then without warning he leapt from the Vertibird leaving me stunned.

"Last chance, jump!" screamed the pilot.

I looked at the door, fear rising in my gut. I tried to move but my lower half is cement. Finally I get the courage I sprint at the door, but it's too late. I heard the last scream of the pilot for only a millisecond then, it's my turn.

Darkness dominates my vision. My eyelids are heavy, and hard to raise. After a few minutes I manage to open my eyes to see blurry figures running but darkness takes me again. I manage to open my eyes once again to see a few figures in the distance and I heard this steady thudding noise.

My vision starts to clear and I see a couple of Super Mutants, one with a minigun, the other was wielding a big stick of wood.

My head's pounding but I manage to find the strength to look for a weapon. After a few seconds I managed to procure a lead pipe. Crude, but effective enough for my purpose.

I got up slowly, trying not to tip off the Muties. Crouching, I slowly made my way over when unexpectedly I crushed a tin can with my boot causing the mutie with the wooden stick alert to my presence. Damn, stealth had never been my strong suite. The Mutie roared viciously and charged straight at me! I hadn't expected to face them head on but I had no choice, as he entered my reach I swung the pipe as fast could at his face.

He grunted as he took the blow and he dropped his stick, stunned. Jumping up as high as I could I brought the lead pipe down on the top of his head.
He looked at me and blinked dumbly, falling over on his side. I moved in to finish the job bringing the pipe on his head again and again screaming with rage, causing blood to spray all over me with each blow.
On my fifth strike the pipe broke in half, and I decided that was enough. Then I spotted Carl some 50 ft off huddling behind a small rock, with the minigun Mutie approaching him! I quickly picked up the stick of wood the dead Mutant dropped, noting a nail sticking out on one side. I sprinted as fast as I could toward the Mutie hoping to save Carl.

After I reached them I stepped in front of Carl and swung the stick right at the mutie's head. The nail went deep in his skull but his finger tensed on the trigger.

I force it in, deeper and deeper.

His legs started to quiver.

Deeper and deeper.

His arms tremble.

Deeper and deeper.

His head shakes viciously.

Deeper and deeper.

His body suddenly relaxes and he falls to the ground. Carl stood up dusting himself off.
"That was a close one, thanks."

I nodded and I stooped to pick up the minigun.
"I lost all my gear in the crash," I explained

He simply nodded and we started walking toward the sunset.
"One helleva start to this hunt" I muttered.

Chapter 4
Decent to Darkness

Carl and I walked well into the night southward. After hours of trudging in the dark we found an old abandoned Metro station.
"Think we can rest here?" he panted, tired.

I thoroughly examined the station the best I could in the dark.
"Looks clear but we'll need to rest inside, Radscorpions will get us if we stay out here." I said

He groaned and pulled out his laser pistol, as he had lost his plasma rifle in his drop from the Vertibird.
"You got the big gun, you take point," he pouted.

I opened the rusty gate, and hefted my minigun, ready for action. We headed into the dimly lit station looking for any signs of trouble. The station was dark and filled with debris; tin cans, empty soda bottles, and a variety of cups and plates.
We walked around cautiously, in case there were traps lying about.
"I got a bad feeling about this??" Carl whined.

"Shut up, we may not be alone," I said staring at the dark.
The dark seemed to stare back.
This is nonsense; I thought, Carl's jumpiness is just getting to me.
A growl came from the dark, long and loud. Carl raised his laser pistol nervously and loosed a few shots.

"You [censored]!" I yelled, slapping him in the face. I swear ever since our crash incident he became such a coward. Another growl came, but it was closer than before and, it came from right in front of me. I spun up the minigun, just as a Feral Ghoul leapt at me.

The 5mm rounds tore through his rotting flesh exploding in puffs of blood and bone; tearing him to shreds. The minigun came to a stop, smoking.
"I told you there was something there!" Carl puffed up proudly.

"Shhhh, I hear something," I whispered

A cacophony of growls came from the dark. "Maybe we should leave you know, we can keep on walking outside," he pleaded. He turned toward the gate we came through.
Then all the lights went out, plunging us in darkness. Growls came from all directions and I heard Carl scream. "AHHH!! Help me! Help me!" Laser bursts split the air and Carl's screaming continued. "AHHH Help! Help!" his voice faded away, replaced with vicious growls.

"Carl?" I called out.
I felt movement all around me, flittering shadows, black on black.
I spun up the minigun, readying myself for the conflict to come. I powered on my PiP-Boy's flashlight.

Dozens of ghouls with their rotting flesh surrounded me, growling with hunger, growling with madness.

The minigun was ready so I depressed the trigger, sending a steady stream of bullets that pounded the ghouls into puddles of blood and bits of bone. I started circling around firing madly seeing their faces twist into agony moments before they fell apart.

The minigun suddenly stopped spouting bullets just as a ghoul jumped in front of me. Sensing weakness the ghouls screamed and leapt forward. Having no other choice I dropped the minigun and pulled back my fist and gave it all I have. The Feral's skull was crushed spewing brains and blood all my armor.

The remaining ghouls backed off fearing me; I guess I killed a leader of sorts. Glancing around I looked for a weapon. All the things I found were useless; lead pipes, sticks of wood, and pieces of glass. Then luckily I spotted an old baseball bat lying under a battered bench. Picking it up I examined it. It was dirty, had some dents, and the handle was worn with use.
Good enough I thought, shouldering the weapon. I wandered through the station, ghouls following out of the light. I went down one of the old tracks, lost. Then I spotted a trail of blood, fresh blood. Quickly I followed it eagerly hoping to find any clue to Carl's whereabouts.

The blood led to a short hallway, and into a small, ground level vent. I was about to go inside when, in the corner of my eye, I spotted a bright green glow. I turned hoping to find another survivor, preferably Carl. Instead I saw a ghoul, glowing a bright emerald green from within.

It screamed, emitting a wave of green. My Geiger counter clicked wildly; that wave was radioactive! I'm no coward but I didn't want to go up against something I'm unsure about. Quickly I ducked into the vent and crawled through it quickly.

When I reached the end a laser burst nearly fried my brain. "Carl?" I called out.

"Yeah, come in quick," he replied quickly.

I crawled out of the vent and straightened myself out (no easy thing to do in Power Armor). I immediately spotted Carl sitting on the ground, holding his side which had a nasty gash.
"What happened to you?" I questioned.

"Damn Ferals jumped me when the lights went out, they dragged me off and they tried to pull my armor off." He said quietly. "But I got them bastards, I gottem good," I sensed his sick smile beneath his helmet. "Then this??..green guy pounced on me, clawing at my armor. He managed to rip a piece off, and then I shot him in the face," he mimicked shooting his pistol. "I only got his eye but it distracted him long enough for me to get away."

I nodded, understanding. "So what is this place?" I asked

"Some sort of office," he replied "I found a body, it's over there in the corner," He motioned.
I went to where he indicated and I found a corpse; it was a man, his ribs shown through his skin, it looked like he starved to death. Nearby I found a journal open with handwriting scrawled over the pages. I closed the book and read the cover.

The Journal of Rickety Williams.

I flipped through the book and decided to read anything legible.

2277/01/05
Found a metro station today, full of mole rats but looks to be a possible location for a settlement. I'll put the idea to the caravan leaders and see what they think.
2277/01/07
They loved the idea, as this station is highly defendable and is a convenient stop for traders. The new settlement is to be called Metro Town. Not very original but better than calling a town "Megaton"
2277/01/10
Council has appointed me chief engineer of defense due to increased sightings of feral ghouls by the south sector. Not the greatest job but for 50 caps a day I'll do just 'bout anything.
2277/01/15
Ferals broke through all my traps! 3 Dozen Mines and strategically placed turrets all used up in 5 days! Town has been put on high alert and, many people have been talking 'bout leaving. I'll never leave. Never!
2277/01/17
Ghouls overran the town last night, they tore apart just 'bout everything they could get their claws on. Men, women, and children were brutally executed with no mercy. I ran to my secret hiding place, one way in one way out. It's got windows but the sector through those has been 'booby trapped with my secret stash 'o mines. I only got enough food for a few days, but them Ferals should leave by then or they'll starve.
2277/01/25
Damn Ferals are persistent bastards. They haven't left yet, they must be staying for something, I've never seen them so determined to stay in one place! Food's running short, I might risk some scaving tomorrow.
2277/01/26
Went out to search for supplies but I found something much more interesting. A big glowin' ghoul came from the entrance and all the other ghouls practically bowed down to it. Must been some sort of leader type, maybe that's what the ferals have been waiting for.
2277/02/03
Food's been out for 4 days now. I can't go outside 'cause there's a damn army of ferals assembled down here! I never heard of them gathering in such large numbers! I noticed the 'glowin guy gives orders; maybe killing him will disperse the others.
2277/02/07
Using my remaining supplies I've made a new explosive I've dubbed the Nuka-Grenade! It took my only quantum but it should make quite a blast, enough to kill that damn Green guy hopefully. Found a little bit of food and water in a box near my hideout but, I don't dare go any further
2277/02/15
I think this will be my last entry, as I can now clearly see my ribs through my skin and my stomach burns like it's on fire. I never got to use my Nuka-Grenade so I stored it in my desk. Hopefully some waster will get it and kill those ghoulies. Then again it would be hilarious if some feral tripped it on accident.

I felt wiser after reading Rickety's journal. I quickly searched the desk for the Nuka-Grenade mentioned in the journal. After pulling some drawers out I found it, a sealed tin can with a fuse.
"How the hell did you know where that was?" wondered Carl.

"It's a gift from Rickety," I said tossing him the journal.

He glanced at the pages and nodded, understanding.
An alarm started beeping and a robotic voice droned from the speakers. "Motion?Detected??.In Sector?.2A?.Initializing defense protocols."
All the lights in the Metro go full power, blinding me and Carl. I peered through the glass windows spotting ghouls sprinting at me. Mines detonated sending a plume of blood and guts into the air.
The green, glowing ghouls pointed at us, crying out, and dozens of ferals rushed mindlessly toward us sacrificing themselves. A wave of fear came over me. So many ghouls, too many.

Chapter 5
Rising from the Ashes

I stood watching the ferals as they got closer and closer. After a few minutes the mines were up and, the ghouls were against the glass, banging against it with anything; fists, shoulders, even their heads. I looked at Carl worriedly.

He was holding his laser pistol up, aiming at the glass shaking with fear. "They can't break through, can they?" he asked, his voice quivering.

I looked back at the glass, "Maybe, maybe not."

The glowing ghoul strode toward the glass; other ghouls parting to let him through. He reached the glass and with a mighty roar, he bashed the window with his fist.

The window had a single cracked.

Carl and I exchanged uneasy glances.

The ghoul then unleashed a painful howl; releasing a wave of radioactive green energy.

A web of cracks appeared but the window held stubbornly.

"What are we going to do? What are we going to DO?! Carl screamed.

The glowing one smashed the glass with his fist again, making a small hole.

An idea popped in my head. "I'll tell you what we'll do now." I picked up the Nuka-Grenade and clicked a button on the side of it, starting a 5 second countdown.

5

I pull my arm back

4

The Ghoul pounded the glass again.

3

I aimed carefully at the hole in the window.

2

I threw it forward screaming with desperation

1

It landed behind the ghoul; he screamed, sensing his fate.

0
A wave of blue flames bursts through the glass, forcing me and Carl downward. Flames seared the air above our heads, the light burned deep in my retinas forcing them shut. I kept them shut and I fell into the abyss that is sleep.

I woke up later in a daze. I looked around; the room was burned up badly, and Carl was leaning against the wall. "What happened," I asked, getting up.

"Look," he pointed toward the window.

I turned my head to see that the place was COVERED with ashes. One spot had a pile of green, glowing ashes. Well, I thought, at least that's one problem taken care of. We decided to leave; we crawled out using the vent and walked through the station, which was covered with ashes.
That was one hell of a grenade, I thought; if only I could make more. We started towards the gate and I looked back feeling sad for the people who had lost their lives. I turned back around, leaving.
Ashes is all I felt.

Ashes.

Chapter 6
Vengeance
Carl and I emerged into the wasteland, leaving the nightmares of Metro Town behind us. The sun was bearing down on us as we wandered the wastes for an hour, maybe two (Time seems to crawl when you're bored) when, suddenly a sand storm started up. Luckily it started up ahead of us giving us time to seal our armor against the dangerous grains of sand.

We continued walking, stiffly into the storm. The storm worsened, I couldn't see a thing, but I continued onward.

The wind picks up against me, tiring me; making each and every step an effort.

Onward, was my only thought.

Must?..continue??..onward.

It came to be so difficult that just picking up my feet felt like pulling the wasteland up with me.

Heaving, I brought my foot in the air for another step.

It stubbornly froze in the air, locking up. I quickly glanced at Carl. He was a few yards behind me, frozen midstride.

I turned back around, just in time to completely lock up. Unbalanced I fell sluggishly through the air, landing with a dull thud on the hard, unforgiving dirt.

Having no other choice I waited for the storm to pass. Boredom seemed to make time pass slower, but I decided to stay awake, weary of any scavengers that might try to finish me off while I was vulnerable.

Eventually, the storm passed and with it, a disturbing silence. I tried to move my arm, leg, head anything, but the hydraulic joints refused movement. The seals to block the sand broke, I thought.

I decided to use the evacuation emergency program in my armor. Tiny charges detonated, destroying joints, allowing movement.

I clawed at the armor, trying to remove it anyway I could. After I shed my armor I walked shakily to Carl.

"You okay in there?" I rasped my throat dry.

"Yeah, hold on a second" he shouted, the armor speakers offline.

Tiny pops came from his armor, destroying the joints. Carl stood up and like me, shed his armor. After he managed to remove his armor (I helped some) he picked it all up, intending to carry it.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"I might need it later on," he replied.

"It's broken!" I shouted angrily.

Carl shrugged.

I decided not to try to convince Carl to drop the useless armor, too tired for a pointless debate.

So we walked the wasteland, only wearing our underwear. Walking became more difficult as time went on. For me it was the lack of water, for Carl it was the weight of the broken armor.

As sunset approached, I spotted 3 dark, blurry figures in the distance. After a quick discussion with Carl, we decided that we should see if they could give us any assistance.

After further examination, we discovered the three figures were none other than Brotherhood of Steel footsoldiers!

I knew that this detachment had gone "Native" and helped locals as much as they could. Walking up to them I heard them chuckle.

"Hey, Do I know you?" One asked.

"No??.." I trailed off.

"Yeah, you're that Caleb fella, the one that got booted from the Brotherhood," He said confidently.

"Yes," I gritted through my teeth.

"Hey Bradley, should we help this Outcasted?" He asked jokingly.

"Yeah, give him what he gave us," Said the Brotherhood soldier called Bradley.

The first soldier raised his middle finger to my face.

Furious, I clenched my fist and pulled it back for a powerful blow to his face. The soldier pointed his Laser Rifle with dangerous intent. I froze, knowing that this was a fight I couldn't win. "That's right, you're not man enough to dare hit me," the soldier boasted, lowering his rifle.

Carl surprised me by throwing a rock the size of baseball at the soldier's head, smashing his skull causing a spray of blood and brain to shoot out.

The remaining two rushed to bring their weapons up, a Laser Rifle and a Gatling Laser. I quickly took the dead soldier's rifle as it fell from his hands, and squeezed the trigger as fast as I could. The first couple of shots went wide, missing their targets by a considerable margin. But a few shots hit, burning into their armor and I could smell the charred flesh.

I got a lucky shot into the visor of the Gatling laser wielding one, instantly frying his brain. The other soldier looked at his dead comrades and bravely fought on, despite the odds. Carl managed to smash his fingers that were gripping his rifle, with yet another rock. The soldier somehow managed to retain his rifle, but I had my rifle properly shouldered by now and I fired a tight cluster of laser bursts into his upper chest; wounding him severely.

The soldier fell under my merciless barrage, and collapsed in a crumpled heap. Carl and I managed to procure 2 functioning suites of Power Armor, a Laser Rifle in moderate shape, and the Gatling Laser which was in a pristine condition.

I chose to carry the laser rifle and Carl wielded the Gatling laser, and he even modified it using spare parts from a laser rifle from one of the Brotherhood troops we killed. Outfitted with basic Power Armor we set off to continue our mission.

"What did you do to get booted from the Brotherhood?" Carl inquired.

"On a tech recovery mission at Fort Bannister, some mindless wastelanders showed up, firing at us," I said. "We easily took them out with a few precision bursts, but more and more showed up; it was like they were assembling a [censored] army! After a few minutes of killing I asked who they were." I stopped for a second, remembering the answer. "They said that the people were attacking us because they lived in the Fort and they were probably coming back from a hunt of some sort." I stopped, unwelcome emotions returning. "We were taking innocent people's lives and homes; I just couldn't take it, so I turned on my Brothers, and fired my rifle into their backs, killing them swiftly. The Locals thanked me and gave me all the supplies I could carry, and since then I set up my own operation, freeing people as often as I could manage."

Carl took it all in, absorbing my story with an eager glint in his eyes.

We continued walking until the sun finally gave way for night. We spotted a small shelter made of plates of scrap metal. We laid down, eager to rest from the harshness of the day. Carl kept his Gatlin Laser rather close at hand, and seemed nervous, like he was waiting for something. Suspicious, I pretended to sleep, making soft snoring sounds, secretly keeping my laser rifle under my armored chest.

After what seemed like half an hour, Carl rose to his feet, holding the Gatling Laser ready for use. I moved my arm to grip my hidden rifle. Carl stood over me, blocking out the moonlight. "Time for you to pay," he murmured.

As his fingers tensed on the trigger, I quickly rolled over, bringing my Laser Rifle up to bear. Carl was surprised, his fingers moving from his trigger in shock.

I quickly fired a shot at his hand pulling the trigger, burning it. He dropped his weapon and instinctively grasped his wounded hand. I bashed him in the head with the butt of my rifle, knocking him unconscious. I swiftly took his Gatling Laser away and I searched him for something, anything that might lead me to the reason why he had tried to attack me.

Finally I found an audio holotape, and I inserted it in my Pip-Boy to hear its contents.

"Hello, this is Colonel Autumn here to give you your new assignment, one that if completed you will be welcomed back into the Enclave with open arms."

Autumn? I thought.

The holotape continued. "You have been selected to be drafted in Project Vengeance,"

Project Vengeance!?

"Since the reported death of your father, you have long wondered who was responsible for the dastardly deed."

Carl's Father?

"You are being partnered with a new conscript, his name is irrelevant but, this is the man responsible for your Father's untimely demise."

"New conscript?." I trailed off. "Me?" I wondered

The holotape continued. "You have been given the opportunity for retribution, for vengeance. Your mission is to kill this meddler, once it is completed, come back to Raven Rock for new orders. Autumn out."

With this revelation, I looked at Carl, with hatred rising all throughout me. I pointed my Laser Rifle at him preparing to fire.

"No," said some part of my conscience, "It is not up to you to decide whether he lives or dies."

My rifle shook in my hands, unable to bring myself to kill Carl, I reluctantly lowered my weapon.

I walked away, to cool off when I saw a cave, with Deathclaws leaving it, to hunt. Suddenly I had an idea, and on an impulse I followed it. I dragged Carl's limp body toward the cave.

Carl woke up in the dark, his head aching. He glanced around and spotted a holotape laying on the ground next to him. He picked it up and played it using his Power Armor's speakers.

"Hello, this is Colonel Autumn here to give you your new assignment, one that if completed you will be welcomed back into the Enclave with open arms?.."

Damn, Carl thought. He found my mission tape. The tape continued to play.

"You have been selected to be drafted in Project Vengeance?."

Carl stood up, and found his Gatling Laser, laying several feet away.

"You are being partnered with a new conscript, his name is irrelevant but, this is the man responsible for your Father's untimely demise," The holotape droned.

Carl wielded his Gatling Laser, ready for danger.

"You have been given the opportunity for retribution, for vengeance??.."

Carl felt his old hatred return, adrenaline pumping throughout his veins.

"Your mission is to kill this meddler, once it is completed, come back to Raven Rock for new orders. Autumn out."

Carl walked around looking for any signs of Caleb.

"Hello Carl," said the holotape. "If you're listening to this you are awake, in this dark, damp cave,"

Carl growled with anger at the sound of Caleb's voice.

"I put you here, unable to kill you myself, so I decided to give you a chance, much more than you would have given me last night." Continued the holotape.

"Come on out you [censored]!" Carl screamed, feeling helpless.

"This gives you a chance to come after me to gain your honor, and have some measure of vengeance."

Deathclaws emerged from the darkness surrounding Carl. Carl furious, unloaded his Gatling Laser, spraying the Deathclaws with deadly beams of light.

"If you don't want to try to escape, there is a grenade on your ankle, pulling it starts a 3 second countdown, use it to end your miserable life if you want. Caleb out" The holotape finished.

Carl continued to fire his weapon screaming with every inch of air in his lungs, turning Deathclaws into piles of ashes. A monstrous Deathclaw emerged from the darkness, walking slowly observing its prey.

Carl continued firing, the barrel now glowed a bright cherry red. Carl moved his fire toward the new coming Deathclaw. The Deathclaw took the punishment, flinching with each impact.

Carl's Gatling Laser barrel, melted, unable to fire at this new threat. The Deathclaw crept forward triumphantly, certain its prey couldn't harm it.

Carl raised his fists, intent on fighting hand to hand with the Deathclaw. The Deathclaw paused, confused but it continued forward and stood next to Carl. It was a magnificent specimen, around 8ft tall, muscular, and had sharp claws and fangs.

Carl punched it, but it had no effect, the Deathclaw impaled him on one of its claw's. It stared him in the eyes and studied the creature that dared, attack its kin.

Carl pulled the grenade off of his ankle, and heard Caleb's words in his head. " You can have some measure of vengeance."

Carl roared at the Deathclaw, releasing his rage, proving he had nothing left to fear. He brought the grenade up to the Deathclaw's face. The Deathclaw looked at him, pity in its eyes, for a creature consumed by raged.

The grenade detonated, creating a huge explosion, leaving nothing but a large puddle of blood, and a Gatling Laser. Leaving nothing but, Vengeance.

Chapter 7
Where the Heart isn't
I wandered the wastes after leaving Carl to his fate, feeling no regrets. I was quite shocked that someone I considered an ally, a friend, to be plotting against me the whole time he knew me. To keep my emotions in check, I walked, breathing the cool night air. I walked; weariness seemed to avoid me, knowing I was in no mood to fight against my body.

As the sky lightened up with the coming of the sun, the land I saw around me seemed familiar. The shriveled, black remains of trees; the brownish tufts of irradiated grass, and in particular, a dark shape on the horizon.

The Sun rose up more revealing the shape to be a large barn; made of rotting wood and rusty plates of metal, with large machine gun turrets surrounding it, protecting it from every direction.

I should have known my feet would lead me here.

Home.

I walked towards it, the turrets instantly locked on to me, but they held their ordinance. As I reached the side of the barn, I pressed a small button, hidden by the rivets of the scrap metal holding the barn together.

A door opened, welcoming me home. I walked inside; the barn seemed to have a musty smell, and everything had a fine layer of dust covering it. The door shut behind me.

Home.

I hadn't been here in so long, I had nearly forgotten it. I stripped myself of the Power Armor and entered my room. I laid down on my bed, eager to rest. Staring at the ceiling, I tried to sleep, convincing myself it was safe. After a minute, my body succumbed to the weariness my body had been through, and I finally fell asleep, home at last.

I woke to the sound of a woman's voice. "Caleb? Caleb, come on it's a beautiful day!" she exclaimed. I opened my eyes to see her; a soft face, with pale skin and light falling on her short, dark red hair.

My Wife, Angela.

"Just a min?" I grumbled, drowsy.

"Come on, Darren wants to see his father today," she said softly, knowing I wasn't fully awake.

I turned over on my mattress to see a boy, only about five feet tall, with short, dark brown hair, and a pale complexion. He smiled, seeing that I had woken up.

"We've got lots of things to do today Caleb," Angela said, excited.

I reached up to caress her face softly, having not seen her in such a long time.

But my fingers never reached her, she faded away, replacing the bright room with a darker, danker place. It had been a dream.

It was a damn good dream I thought, truly awaking. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, I hadn't seen my family in too long. Then again I thought, I haven't seen them since they were taken.

I stood up and stretched, not feeling sore, as I usually was, probably a benefit from all my operations I had back in the Enclave base. After re-suiting up in my Power Armor, I went to the fridge, looking for food.

Nothing.

My stomach growled, angry at this result. I rushed over to my dresser and found my hidden stash. I pulled out a whiskey bottle and drank until my stomach gave in, accepting this for a meal.

I walked around slowly, loosening up, hearing my armor's servos whine in synch with my steps. While strolling about my house, I saw my journal open on my desk. Strange, I usually kept it in one of the drawers. I read the pages that were open.

Entry:27

More mutants have appeared around Vault 87. Possible base or breeding site? It also seems that they prefer to capture people for some reason. I've seen that they eat some humans, but they must be doing something else with their captives.

Entry:28

Angela and I made some major progress today! We managed to kill one of those hulking Behemoths. Using a Fatman launcher we found, the Behemoth was easy pickings with our 2 mini-nukes.

Entry:29

Super Mutants are approaching our house! They seemed to have made a small army to get us, probably because we killed their Behemoth. I've installed turrets, and planted mines to defend our home, hopefully we'll pull through.

Entry:30

They took Angela and Darren! They sacrificed mutant after mutant to reach our house. They knocked me out with a hammer and took my family. I woke up today, wondering why they didn't take me. After conversing with our distant neighbors, I've heard that they are being held at the Germantown Police headquarters, so I'm heading over there to take them back.

That was my last entry, but something else was written on the last page.

Hello Caleb,

I'm here to help you because good guy's need a break every now and then. When the time comes, use the code 213-908-456.

And by the way search the box under your bed for a gift

Your Benefactor -C

After reading the note, I rushed to my bed, eager to see what lay underneath. I looked under the mattress and spotted a large crate. It was heavy, but I managed to pull out a big metal case. It looked old, probably Pre-War or something. Getting excited I opened the box, lifting the huge metal lid and throwing it off to the side.

Light entered the box revealing a treasure trove of goods. On top of the pile was a modified Fatman Mini-Nuke launcher, with many extra parts and a sleek black Mini-Nuke resting in the barrel.

I put it on my bed, wondering what could top such a gift.

I found a rifle, with a glowing barrel and a few winking blue lights. The weapon was silver and sleek, and seemed to pulse with energy. I held it up, wondering how much power this new rifle had.

I reluctantly looked inside, feeling greedy. The last item was a metal box and had the Nuclear symbol on it. I cautiously touched the box with the tips of my fingers.

ClickClickClickClick! My Geiger counter went wild, clicking in almost a scolding fashion. I retracted my hand, still wondering what could be in the box, when I heard a deep Thud!

I turned around, the source of the sound.

Thud Thud Thud.

It was getting closer, whatever it was. I went to a nearby crack in the wall and peered through.

A colossal, yellow-green, figure was sprinting at my house.

A Behemoth!

I hurriedly grabbed the new Rifle, leaving the other goodies behind in my rush to leave the barn. Opening the door, I sprinted hurrying before the Behemoth could-

Boom! The Behemoth had rammed straight through my house, leaving only rubble and debris in its wake. I groaned at seeing my home destroyed, but there was no time for grief as the Behemoth decided to charge at me! I brought up the strange new rifle and fired.

A bright, florescent blue beam streamed out from the rifle and bored into the Behemoth, burning its tough, leathery hide.

The beast howled with agony, tearing at the air in pain. But I was relentless, pulling the trigger, continuing to torment the monster.

Then the rifle stopped firing.

It must of overheated or something, but the real problem was that it stopped firing, allowing for the Behemoth to recover. I checked the barrel, it was glowing a cool blue, heat radiating off of it.

The Behemoth started to approach me. I squeezed the trigger, willing for the rifle to work.

The rifle, stubborn, refused to fire as the Behemoth entered spitting distance.

"C'Mon, Cmon!" I mumbled, desperate for the rifle to work. The Behemoth bent his leg, readying for a kick.

I was helpless at that point unable to do anything but continue to pull the trigger of my dysfunctional weapon.

Then the foot connected, hitting me like a train, and it sent me flying, full of force.

The world was blurry as I flew through the air, tumbling head over heels, powerless to help my situation.

Thunk!

I hit the edge of a rocky cliff face, pain overriding any other feeling in my body. I moaned and moved slightly, painful as hell, but the way I considered it, I was lucky to feel anything right now.

Darkness ate at the edges of my vision, but I fought to stay awake, not wanting to let anything finish me off. I sat up, feeling broken.

As my body slumped against the rock face, I saw something lying nearby. It was a big launcher, with all sorts of recoil dampers, and a complicated scope system.

The Modified Fatman!

I crawled over to it, eager to prove it wasn't a hallucination. I touched it, making a soft tink, as my armored gauntlet met the Launcher.

I gripped the Fatman and shouldered it, ready to fire.

I saw the Behemoth [censored] off in the distance, smashing up the remains of my home.

I lined up the sights carefully, having only one shot.

The sight lined up and I pulled the trigger.

Swoosh! The Mini-Nuke sprung out of the launcher, gliding through the air, sailing towards its target.

The Behemoth turned, hearing the incoming bomb.

A mighty BOOM! Sounded with a large flash of light and heat. Blinding and burning me, through the Power Armor. Darkness ate at the edges of my vision, I fought desperately to stay awake but it was no use.

I lost the battle with the Darkness, and I saw my Family, waving and smiling, waiting for me to join them. Raising an arm to them a whispering voice echoed in my mind.

"Death is not your destiny, not today??."
