Proof of quality water effects...besides the "white rapi

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:43 pm

Keep in mind that these are water effects in a single frame. I'm sure they will be very impressive in-game. Click image to zoom in further.

Are people really that obsessed with the water in game trailer footage? Really? We seem to have had half a dozen threads on it.

So many water threads! People already know about the better water than the rapids, but thanks for the screenshots :)

The second one? The one with the undead? Look to the right of him, looks like clear water to me. Maybe I'm wrong tho, either snow or bright reflections.

To do rapids realistically requires next-gen hardware. Do you think the Xbox360 can do water that's supposed to look like this?

The answer is no.

Thank you kind sir.
I think the water will be amazing :)
If you would, pay attention to the water during
1:11-1:13 1:23-1:24 1:36 and 1:37
Preferably in slow motion.
And your proof is backed.

If you go through the video frame by frame, you'd see it doesn't move.

Yep, I dont think any technology today could recreate those rapids.
Not a PC, not a PS3, and not an Xbox360.
Good thing its a video game.

Here's what REAL rapids look like. Bethesda's "texture scrolling" method isn't too bad.

Now compare that to http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7384/waterfalls.png and I don't think there's much of anything to complain about.

Also to the OP you forgot http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7071/plantlifewaterscreensho.jpg.

For some reason, nice looking water should be Skyrim's main feature if I judge by the amount of threads on it. :P

I think they look good. Like Rapids even. Good Rapids. Not a moving puddle of virtually simulated river of each and every H20 particle that everyone seems to want. But Rapids nonetheless.

I honestly can't believe people would fret over this so much. Not to mention, this shot will be viewed from a couch, chair, etc., a good distance away from the screen. If they are going to play an inch from the screen on the console version, all the while in the fury of said rapids looking at the water, then yes this is a big issue and needs to be addressed. If they are going to be several feet/meters away and are more interested in that dragon/bandit/M'aiq running along, this shouldn't be a problem. I believe those who created these rapids also worked on the surrounding environment, and aimed to make them meld together. Looking at one aspect might skew people's views on that aspect of the environment. Perhaps if you looked at the waterfalls and the trees very close, you might think it would be "terrible" or "amgFthat".

This obsession over water in a video game is understandable, but I'd rather view more "We want spears" threads. I was happy to see Fire looking good and from what I saw, I believe it melted the snow, which is AWESOME. But the feeling over it subsided (for the moment), even after all the times I watched (and continue to watch) the trailer. I thought I was bad lol

@ the OP, nothing against you at all, thank you for the screenshots ^_^

What was your opinion of the fire in the tavern, in front of that one building, or the spell effects?

I thought they were amazing, they caught my attention for sure. :)

While I agree with the criticisms of the water effects, but it seems that it's getting to the point where no one criticizes anything else. Which is maybe a good sign as it might mean they can't find anything else to criticize, but I'm sure there's something else someone could complain about.

But since this thread was posted, honestly, those images don't impress either. The first one doesn't look any better than the water in Oblivion to me, in fact, I've seen better in games older than Oblivion. I really don't see what anyone sees that's so good about it. I mean, I guess the waterfall in the background is all right, but the river or lake or whatever it is it's flowing into really doesn't impress me. The second one doesn't show enough water for me to judge, the third one is the only one that really looks good to me, and it's still not the best effect of its kind of seen, but if the rest of the water effects in the game can have the same level of quality as that, I can live with it.

I paid attention to the Fire throughout the entire trailer, even looking at the guard's torch in the scene of the nighttime city. But the melted snow was what I was really looking for, some sign that Fire isn't merely something beautiful to look at in this game, like all the others, but something closer to how it behaves in real life. I am REALLY hoping for some Fire propagation, like in FarCry2, which obviously was why I even played the game in the first place. The bonfire in the tavern was nice, however the first time I watched the trailer the moment was short-lived as I was trying to figure out how the patrons didn't instantly react to this guy getting his throat slit.

I'll agree with Selbeth on one thing: The images of the water was kinda unimpressive. I guess with me saying that, it seems a little....biased lol. However, when the final product is released hopefully they listened to the feedback on the trailer and polished the water graphics a bit. The part with the rapids, those few seconds, almost killed the excitement for me. I know that it's for console, and from far away it might not look too bad, however that "Conveyor Belt" look could use some work. I really hope at E3 or whenever they decide to release some more footage, it will be after some improvements to the environment graphics. I'm getting this for PC, it's a first for me; my MW and OB were for Xbox, but I'd hate for Skyrim to fall short on expectations to those who have Skyrim as their first TES experience(For me it will not, however, my passion for TES burns brightly! :flamethrower: ).
