Proper Bows?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:31 am

Ok i would like to know if any one knows if the bows will accuratly resemble there name.

In Oblivion iron bows look like pine, steel looked like mahogany basically all bows looked like made of wood

I want your opinion on if bows should resemble their name, if there ok the way they are or any other bow and arrow related points!

A bow made out of metal wouldn't really work. The type of metal in the name usually referred to the material of the grip.

He does have somewhat of a point though, the OB silver bow looks like its made of solid metal, as does the ebony bow.

That would be cool, if in skyrim bow names broke away from other weapons. There wouldn't be an iron, steel, silver...rusty iron bow, but instead have them named based on the wood used for them.

I'd assume both those bows are decorated with a thing layer of silver/something else.

Making a solid Iron/Steel bow wouldn't be all that effective.

Yeah I know that bending such a bow would be nigh impossible but I don't see how you could coat them in a metal either. Metal just does not have enough give to be pulled and stretched in such a manner without being deformed as a result. I think I will just chalk it up to being a fantasy game. Just as a side note
LOTRs Numenoreans used hollow steel bows so thats always possible.

The middle part of the bow should be made of the said material, at least for the low-end-material ones anyways.

If you affixed the metal plating to the bow using only one point of contact(per plate), the metal wouldn't bend.

But on the Dwarven Bow in OB, there were 4 points of contact per plate...Fu**in' Dwemer. How do they work?

I agree with the idea that bows should simply have their own material "tiers" as in upgrading through wood types instead of metals and perhaps adding "elven" and other faction specifics would also work.

metal always bends at its weakest points(which would be the ends of the bow)

and once it bends to a certain pint it stays there till its bent back

trust me i tried making an all metal catapult for my physics class from my ag mech class and wound up having to make the arm wood for it to work

Actually bow made from spring metal could be quite powerful
Especially if metal would be used also for string
Well, of course if you would enough strength to actually pull back such bow

Although it would be best for bows to have separate material/quality hierarchy

Bronze bows are mentioned in the Christian Bible, and the medieval Indians used steel bows in warfare, so obviously metal bows are possible. How they work, however, is beyond me.

it all depends upon how large of a metal core there is either way ask whoever wrote "the manual of arms" in oblivion.

From what I have noticed, the bow type is determined by the type of metal used on the ends. I think it WOULD be better if bows just had their own material class with yew, etc.

As for the feasibility of a "metal bow". It is possible. All modern bows are made out of aluminum and composite materials which results in a very high tensile strength. This means that there is less "bend" in the limbs when it is pulled back but the energy use and storage is very, very efficient. This is of course because compound bows use a pulley system (generates more energy in a more compact form). Also, crossbows have been made of steel since at least the 14th century. The steel crossbow is/was much more powerful than the old composite (wooden) crossbows, it is more accurate, and has a longer range. So steel bows are possible, but not as a simple steel rod with a string.

I doubt the people of the Empire, let alone Skyrim have the technology required to develope steel bows.

Usually by the time you figure out how to make those you can already make rifles whom are far superior xD

Um, metal actually bends and has some elasticity, depending on how it is forged. Most of those steel medieval swords have blades that dance a bit with impact, they aren't really sturdy straight solid metal. If I recall correctly, the more tempered the steel is in forging, the more "elastic" it gets, which is actually important, otherwise blades would shatter/twist on the first impact. I don't know how a metal bow would work, wood is likely better for this purpose, but it isn't completely out of the question.

As far as I know steel bows weren't common until the first decade of the 20th century. With modern forging techniques, steel bows are possible. See http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/1919/1000935k.jpg
