a proper tip

Post » Sun Jul 13, 2014 7:09 pm

so I (along with the majority of the province) have had no power for the past week

since we obviously can't cook without electricity, and my Generator was apparently stolen out of the tool shed, me and my roommate have been eating take-out and delivery for the past week..

which caused an argument between us...

when ordering delivery (Pizza, Chinese, Lebanese, etc..), how much should you tip the delivery man?

I usually tip a minimum of $5, and go as high as $7.50 depending on how much we ordered and road conditions, while my roommate says one should never tip more than $3..

So, in your opinion, how much should one tip a delivery man when ordering food..?

This is something that's always been a total mystery to me. We usually tip 10-15%, though we sometimes don't tip at all due to a lack of loose change. I'm not sure they actually expect a tip, so it probably doesn't matter.

Nothing below 25%. Anything less just isn't proper.

Yeah, always a percentage of the total wether it's dine in at a restaurant, or delivery.

Even though we dont really tip in Australia, my scale is based, for example if i ordered a pizza, and the weather was basically a living hell and the road condition are really bad, and i get everything i ordered hot, then im likely to give a decent tip, not that i have a disposable income, but if they put real effort in to me personally its worth it, i do the same with Taxi drivers, if i dont have to sit in a taxi listening to their political or racists opinions, but a friendly conversation and if their willing to wait, and not drive off and leave to carry something heavy home which has happened. Otherwise my usual tip is pull your head and stop being lazy.

I usually don't tip the delivery guy. Maybe it's out of an ignorant assumptions I've formed over the years, and having multiple friends who have worked at local pizza shops. From what I understood, delivery drivers are paid minimum wage and have a gas allowance. I'm already paying a premium for delivery and that premium goes back to the pizza shop in order to pay the driver and supply them with a gas allowance.

So tipping the pizza guy for delivery seems a little superfluous since im already paying a delivery fee. It's different than getting good customer service from a waiter since a waiter attends to your needs through the course of the night. The delivery guy hands me my pizza and that's it.

Depends. I don't always tip just because I'm broke a lot of the time, but when I have money, my rule is 25-30% for delivery, 20-25% for restaurant. Reason being, delivery boys have to use their own car, receive only the tiniest stipend for gas, and receive no maintenance assistance from their employer. Or at least, I didn't when I was working as one. I don't mind throwing them an extra buck or two because of that.

Always a percentage, but definitely not 25% for a sit-down meal (unless the service was spectacular and/or the recipient performed sixual favors for you). Start at 15% for your average meal, and then go up or down depending on how the service is.

As far as delivery goes, that depends on whether or not the restaurant charges a base delivery fee. If they do, I think that 15% on top of the delivery fee is probably fair. If they don't charge a delivery fee, 20-25% in total might be more appropriate.

Tipping is so effed up. Part of the problem is so many tips are shared. So maybe your server wasn't the most attentive, but their tip is probably split between them, the kitchen, and whoever buses the table. Are you going to punish the rest of the staff because of one weak link? Most people won't. Neither is tipping any good measure of service/food quality. Most people tip in the range of 10 to 20 percent by default. Quality of service is barely considered. You're going to tip because that's what's expected. Meanwhile, restaurants get to pay employees sub-minimum wage and mask the actual cost of your meal.
In my experience this varies greatly. I've known people who worked for both Dominos and Pizza Hut. Neither we're reimbursed for gas. Delivery fees, as far as I can tell, is just a charge they can tack on because they know they can get away with it. Just like all these new air travel fees. I wouldn't take it as an indication that they're giving some portion of that to the driver. Beyond that, using your own vehicle every day you work is going to incur a lot more expenses than just gas. More frequent maintenance, oil, tires, if something goes wrong, it's essential that it be fixed as soon as possible. Cars are not cheap. Anyone who drives, I'm generally giving a minimum tip, irrespective of the cost of the order.

I hate the whole tips system! In the UK, 10-20% is normal - less is stingy, much more is usually excessive. I usually just round up to the nearest £5.

I can't think about tipping without remembering this sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1ZZWhSvOMI

I usually tip depending on how much it is and how my bills will break up. So like 43 dollars, Ill just give em 50. At like 17 dollars, Ill give them 20. If it's 19.50, then ill give them 20 and try to throw them a few bucks in change as well if i got it. If it's 80 dollars even, Ill probably give em 90 dollars. I usually tip pretty generously, but when working in the restaurant business, the servers expected 15% as the standard.

Also depends on how high class the place is, like at the Keg, the servers would complain to me out back while having a smoke that someone only tipped 15%, because the tips at the keg can be outrageous (I know some servers that would make over 1000 dollars in tips in a night, plus their wages).

We had a whoooooole thread about this a while back. I'ma go ahead and explain how it works where I work, at Papa John's. When a driver is on the road or in the store is electronically recorded. While we're in the store, we're being paid minimum wage, but while on the road, only $4.75 an hour. Which means on a busy night shift without tips you've made nada. Our delivery fee is something around $2.30, but us drivers only get a dollar of that (Which is ridiculous. The system isn't great). So please tip. Also, don't order regular menu priced food from Papa John's. It's ridiculously expensive. Always the deals.

Gas stoves, man. Gas stoves.

25?

where do you live?

10-15 is usually what I hear.

I wonder when this thread will get into the whole automatic tipping culture in the States conversation.

Yes, 25. I could never fathom being stingy. These are people's lives we're talking about, not to mention that they are serving you food and/or delivering to your front door.

I usually like to tip delivery folks. I appreciate their efforts for my convenience. I usually go with a percentage, adjusted by weather, promptness, and courtesy.

However, not many places discard their "mandatory" delivery charge. For me, that comes out of the tip. I am NOT going to pay TWICE for the same service.

Considering that if you had even a $10 meal a 15% tip would be (at minimum wage) 30% of their hourly income... I don't think that's being stingy. Four of those an hour and they've increased their income by 120%.
