Properly uninstalling mods

Post » Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:05 am

Hi,

I have a problem with uninstalling mods.

There's a mod, for example, which causes evil GSMTs.

So I delete the esp files. Will the meshes, textures and other stuff which comes with the mod affect my game? Do I also have to manually delete those too?

Can someone tell me a proper way to remove these files? Or are they unimportant and won't affect my game?

From experience, I had to delete KF files in meshes only, since add/replace animations. Other meshes, textures and objects don't really integrate into the game, without the mod itself, I think.

Thank you.

If you delete the ESP, the files will not effect your game anymore. But you might as well delete them if they aren't being used though, to save space.
Keep in mind that some mods use the same files (resources used by more than one mod, for example) so deleting them would cause problems.

http://www.mentalelfz.com/tesfiles.html has the ability to pull all files associated with an ESP, making for an easy uninstall.

But, if your problem is just some GMSTs, why don't you just clean the mod? It takes one second with a tool like http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=utilities.detail&id=34 or http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=other.detail&id=52.

Thanks

Im sceptical about using TESTool or any program.

I use TESTool to tick mods, yes, but not clean.

Are uncleaned entries which aren't evil acceptable? Are mod conflicts alright too?

I just get rid of mods with "evil" GMST entries. But I ignore other unclean entries. Is this safe?

There are some entires with "s" and "f" at the beginning.
But aren't on the evil entries list:
http://www.mwmythicmods.com/evilgmsts.htm

is GSMT and other unclean entries allowable?

I have heaps of conflicts, but less uncleaned entries. I don't see conflicts harmful, since there's a chance that one entry will trigger, and the other is disregarded.

GMST just stands for GaMe SeTing.
There are often very valid and very good reasons for a mod to change a GMST, so they ought not to be assumed automatically indicative of a mod being unclean. They are most certainly allowable, as long as they aren't one of the 72 'evil' GMSTS - and even then there are some valid reasons to change them. You should really only be suspicious of a GMST setting if it is one of the 'evil' GMSTs and it is accompanied by the other 'evil' GMSTs, which will come in chunks of 72, 61 or, less commonly, 11.

Unclean mods can results in unclean/corrupted savegames which in extreme cases can course CTD and other nasty things. The easiest thing is too uninstall a mod. It basically done just by unchecking the mod in the Data Files at the launcher. Another thing is too properly clean a savegame for a particular mod if necessary. In most cases although is should be enough just too save in a new slot after uninstalling the mod. If you don't use the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php??showtopic=1084044 I recommend this well known method if want too be more safe:
Untidy mod removal resulting in "dirty saves" has possibly been one of the more common contributors to Savegame corruption and this one can be resolved by the mod user. http://wryemusings.com/#WryeMash is of benefit here. Other methods of making a "a clean save" are in http://www.mwmythicmods.com/Archives/Mods/How%20to%20clean%20a%20saved%20game.htm thread by DinkumThinkum, describing three methods for cleaning a saved game: the "standard" in-game method, using TESAME and using the Enchanted Editor. Novice mod users should use the in-game method or http://wryemusings.com/#WryeMash:

? In-Game Method - Short Version, Revised
  • 1. Save your game in a cell unaffected by the mod, in a new slot
  • 2. Uncheck the mod in your Data Files list and click OK
  • 3. Re-start Morrowind - load the new save you made. Press yes to all errors
  • 4. Re-save in a new slot and exit Morrowind
  • 5. Regenerate Merged_Objects.esp
  • 6. Regenerate Merged_Lists.esp (using TESTool and Leveled List Resequencer)
  • 7. Re-start Morrowind - load the newest save and check modified .esps as necessary. Press yes to all errors
  • 8. Re-save in a new slot and exit Morrowind

? Using http://wryemusings.com/#WryeMash
  • 1. Save your game in a cell unaffected by the mod, in a new slot
  • 2. In Wrye Mash, go to Mods tab and uncheck the mod
  • 3. Go to Saves tab and select the savegame
  • 4. Regenerate Merged_Objects.esp in TESTool
  • 5. Regenerate MashedLists.esp in Wrye Mash
  • 6. Masters List. Select "Sync to Load List". "Save".
[Checkbox for the savegame should turn blue (up to v.0.62) or purple (v.0.65)]
  • 7. Re-start Morrowind - load the newest save. Press yes to any errors
  • 8. Re-save in a new slot and exit Morrowind

Hope something here has answered most for your questions and concerns.

Or, you can leave the textures/meshes/icons right where they are; they don't do anything except take up space after the esp is unchecked and if you have a modern harddrive of 100+ GB, you aren't really worried about space.

I use MCP, which helps a great deal with preventing savegame corruption.

I would suggest:

1) making a save in an interior cell which has as little modded content as possible.
2) back up that savegame to another folder.
3) In wryemash, on the mods tab, uncheck the mod. On the saves tab, highlight the save you just made, right-click in the mods window and choose update.
4) right-click on the save and choose repair all.
5) close any popup window and then close wryemash.

Play Morrowind.

Installing and uninstalling mods without using either MCP or Wryemash (I use both) is a crapshoot. Sometimes it doesn't matter, sometimes the errors build up until you have a completely unplayable game. My personal experience with TESTool is that I overused it and screwed up all of my saves and mods. If you have a mod with GMSTs in it, the best thing to do is first read the readme to see if they're mentioned. If not, ask the mod author if they are intentional. If they aren't intentional, the author might actually appreciate knowing the mod was released before cleaning.

Thanks guys.

So mods with unclean entries will definitely cause unclean saves? There aren't terribly too many of them, should I just ignore them, as well as the mod conflicts?. I ll try to clean saves in the future with wrye mash IF i do run into trouble (which I dont want happening in the first place).

cheers.
