Prophet

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:13 pm

I have played this game for quite a lot of time and have found something that leaves me speculating. I know who the prophet is, but who is he? Do you know what I mean? Where did he come from and is he entirely mortal? Who exactly is this person? How is he so wise?

I'm sure I remember one NPC telling me about the Prophets past when I had enquired about him.

Don't remember the details though.

Perhaps he's an avatar of the Nine...I mean, the Eight and One.

He is a prohpet. :P Seriously, it doesn't matter where he came from, that's the whole point: he's meant to be mysterious. He spreads the word of the Nine and preaches all that stuff, and after Knights of the Nine has finished, he disappears forever.

And I don't think he some kind of avatar of the Nine... but I guess we never know. All we can do is speculate here, so I doubt you'll get a perfectly straight answer.

Let's try this in the Lore forum, where we may get additional worthwhile speculation, and we won't be accused of running spoilers in Oblivion General.

A prophet literally speaks for a god: someone who is called by a god to speak the words that god desires to be spoken. So, what god called the Prophet?

As an answer to why he is so wise: When a prophet is called by a god, the god (in most cases) imparts the knowledge/wisdom needed by the prophet to successfully bring the message of the god to the masses - but not necessarily in the form of normal or conscious knowledge (by this I mean the knowledge that we learn from books or teachers or from experience) - that's why it seems almost as if the prophet is being used as a conduit, rather than speaking his own mind.

I believe I heard somewhere that he is an avatar, but I could be mistaken. I never quite finished KotN myself, but I have researched it quite extensively. All it says on the wiki is that he disappears after the whole quest is complete, so he doesn't seem to be your average prophet.

EDIT: Plot devices aside, I think what the OP wants is some real information. I'm sorry to say, but there might not be any  It's the plot's fault, really.

Prophet: Greek for spokesman, implied of the Gods. When the prophet no longer needs to speak for the gods because the event they needed a prophet for has gone, the prophet, for all intents and purposes, is destroyed. He is no longer needed and so what better fate for him than to disappear? Would you rather he linger on and explain his entire backstory and who he was and how he was changed when he was "inspired" to preach about Umaril?

I don't know where the prophet came from, and I don't think we're supposed to, as has been said, his role is to impart the knowledge he must spread, and he did just that, where he came from, or where he went after his role is over, are of no importance. If we were supposed to know more than that, we would have been given the relevant information, if not from his own mouth then from some other source.

If you think about why he was able to give you the blessing of Talos you'll begin to understand more fully just who or what he is.
